Isaac Heeney

Isaac Heeney is a crowd favourite and one of the best young players in the competition. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2018 AFL Mark of the Year award, was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in two of his eligible four years and played his 100th senior game in 2019. Heeney can be used in the midfield, forward line – where he booted four goals in star teammate Lance Franklin’s absence in Round 20 last year – or as a loose man in defence.

Heeney's midfield nous/iq has developed rapidly this season. I think it was an underlying factor in his spectacular game v Giants. Even the little push off is IQ & then prior to that is the work rate to make the contest but not over-commit.

Everyone will marvel - rightly - at the mark. Very few players could even attempt that, let alone pull it off.

But I can’t stop watching that third goal. To have already run from the backline at full pace, have the nous to deal with Whitfield legally, to collect the ball and unleash that perfect kick while still running at full speed…who else could do that?
I can only think of two who could have also finish that goal off, Buddy and Dusty - though I am not sure either of them would have sprinted from defence to the middle of the ground to receive the ball in the first place.

The only way to celebrate such a big pair of milestones is a big win. No doubt Heeney will be pumped - lets hope his team mates follow his lead, but a bit earlier in the game.

A super player, and still potentially several great years of footy ahead of him. Not out of the question he will finish 2nd only to Goodesy on our all time games played list!

How good have Heeney's finals performances been?

We've come to expect these performances from him, but I'm in awe at how damaging he has been. He's seriously playing on a different level to everyone else on the ground.

I thought his performance against Port was just about flawless. Similar to his game against GWS, he impacted across all 4 quarters and had big moments. But against Port, it seemed like a case of teammates seeing him down field and just kicking it to him with the confidence he would do the rest.

It really is a travesty he won't be a brownlow medallist at the end of the year because he certainly deserves it.

Seeing as how Nick Daicos is such a nice guy, I'm quietly confident he'll do a Bob Murphy on Brownlow night and hand his medal over to the true 2024 Brownlow Medalist Issac Heeney. It's just the right thing to do.

It’ll be interesting to see how they give him votes after his suspension, considering he probably had a few games where he should poll 3
The Collingwood game will be exhibit A. Clearly the most influential player in the final quarter when the game was won. Will the Brownlow votes reflect that?
