Up until last season I thought of Grant as one of those "flashy" types who kicks freakish goals and is a good receiver. I also thought that he was more suited as a half-forward flanker than in the midfield.

2001 changed my views, he became the workhorse of the midfield. His in-and-under stuff was excellent, so was his work rate.
He basically covered for Bell (who we still miss) and to some degree, Stevens.

If he can continue on from last year - with Stevo back and maybe one or two of the younger guys pushing their way into the lineup (Smith, Motlop or Harris) along with Simmo and Harvey working hard, our midfield should look okay.

Couldnt agree more TR

Yep, there was a definite transformation this last season.

No longer just a gifted player who would float in and out of the game, kicking the odd handy goal, Shagga has added real engine room grunt to the arsenal. His attack on the ball during the Essendon match had to be seen to be believed, along with his second and third efforts under the packs.

Best of all, he's found consistency. One of my pet dislikes used to be the way that he would go missing in tough encounters... not any more!

As shown by his run of Brownlow BOG's, he is pretty close to being one of the elite midfielders of the comp. Another season of this standard would seal it for me.

You've got to be kidding !! His goal kicking has dried up since he has moved into the mid-field. He was avg 3 goals a game prior to this year.

In our team I rate Stevo and Boomer ahead of him and as good as he is - he definitely isn't in the class of a Voss, Buckley, Rob Harvey at this stage of his career.

But surely his 25-35 possies a game are more valuble than 3 goals.

I think Shagga is a great player, that COULD become one of the best midfielders in the league, BUT I also rate him less highly than Boomer and Stevo, who I think are our best, then Shagga and Simmo are our other great players, but not to the standard of Boomer or Stevo (I think) not a long way to go though. They are running hard and I htink by the end of 2002 they will be rated by me as good as I rate Boomer and Stevo!

Go Roos:p

Shock horror, I rate him above Robert Harvey NOW.

Who does more damage to a side and who does more damage with each possession???

He's always capable of hurting a team on the scoreboard. Not that many top onballers are as capable around goal.

It's Stevo no#1 with Grant and boomer on par and fast approaching.

He matured a hell of a lot last year, even before we lost Stevo. The way he bounced back after the week in the ressies proved that. I hope he continues to step up this year, he's going to be a future leader if he keeps playing to the level he did during last year.

I still think that we have not seen the best of him yet. He was just lazy when he first came to us. He would give up on the ball before he should have, and I spent most of my time sitting at a game thinking that he was able to do far more than he ever showed us. He would get hurt and jump around like a soccer player, if he was chasing the ball and heard someone behind him he would give up or fall over and you just knew that he could have got there first. When Belly left Shannon was able to show us what he can really do, including winning the Syd Barker medal this year, and he did that missing two games. I think that he has the potential to win a Brownlow if he improves on last season. If he keeps the weight off and behaves himself he could be do it next season.

In Grant's first few years with us, the common complaint about him was that he was soft....as you've pointed out, as soon as he heard footsteps, that was it. It's doubly hard for Roo fans to take when we've been brought up on a steady diet of Schimma, Law, Larkin, Stevens, Carey, Martyn, Archer, King etc. etc. But I don't think I've heard any Roo fan call Grant soft in the last twelve months.

As for the Brownlow, I hope that Grant (and any other Roo player) never wins one. The post-Brownlow jinx for players in recent seasons.....we don't need it.

Shinboners I think that the Kangas as a club could keep anyone on the right track if they were to win a Brownlow. I thought when Shannon won the best player for the 1999 GF that we may see him go off a bit, as he achieved both the medals he had been chasing three times, but to his credit he is defnitely doing ok.

Shannon Grant has done close to nothing in the last 2 weeks, i know he had 19 possies this week however his efficiency would be close to 10-20%. Including several missed shots at goal that were relatively easy in that last quarter which would've put us in front!

Drop him then maybe we might get one or 2 more good weeks from him for the rest of the year.

 Well maybe we should drop him..

but after we would get a good season out of him.. remember what happened last year when we dropped him??

Go Roos

I still dont want to see him dropped tho:mad::(

And while we are at it we may as well drop Simmo for only kicking one goal from his 30 possessions, Stevo for failing to win one holding the ball free from his 10 tackles, and Sav for only slotting thru one goal from outside 50.
Dear, oh dear, Kangaman!

dont be stupid...

simpson gets 25-30 possies week in week out - unlike grant, stevo has recently came back from a knee reconstruction, rocca is our only key forward (with jones) really cant drop them!

Um... I was being sarcastic. My suggestions were simply outrageous and just plain silly - probably as outrageous and silly as yours.

One loss and you're all acting like a bunch of Collingwood fans.

Agreed Shinners. Made a similar comment on another thread, but used Richmond. ;)

Don't put all of us in with Kangaman and his stupid comments! He is the only one wanting to drop an out-and-out gun!!
I'm not too sure if people understand my comments were meant to be tongue-in-cheek. PM me and I can explain if you like!
