James Rowbottom

The Sydney Swans recruited James Rowbottom with their second selection at the 2018 AFL Draft and the midfield bull impacted from the get-go. The Oakleigh Chargers product made his AFL debut against Richmond at Marvel Stadium in Round 5, 2019 and finished the season with 12 senior games beside his name. Rowbottom also led the NEAFL MVP voting when it was hidden from the public after Round 12. The young Swan is a ball magnet, explosive at the stoppages, an outstanding tackler and a clean user of the footy.

To me last Saturday's performance proves he was playing injured for most of 2021.

I could be wrong here but didn't Horse himself confirm this?

Edit: Confirmed. 13:30 in this video he's asked about him and he reiterates about seven times in his answer that he'd had injuries and wasn't able to train.

Stood out to me at the time because Horse is usually pretty coy, and if he's asked about a kid who is struggling he'll usually give the generic "Development isn't always upwards" answer, rather than be so forward about what a player's carrying.

He'll absolutely dominate this season if he stays injury free. His kicking use to be pinpoint, so probably as a younger player, progressing other parts of his game has regressed his kicking, but I'm confident that he'll round it out with more exp

Rowbottom given a week for his bump on Dylan Shiel. I thought Rowy had a good game and bit of a loss with Carlton coming up
Be interesting to see how we cover him, both numerically and positionally. He's been doing a lot of inside work so we may need to bring Warner and Florent inside more plus visitors maybe and bring Stephens in to work outside. Alternatively bring Clarke in to tag.

Wonder if the Club will challenge. Thought he was struggling for balance.
Chose to "bump" and got him high. That's usually cut and dry. Don't think any point challenging and risking 2 weeks. But he is unlucky, going full pace and just got him in the jaw. Couple inches lower and there's no high contact. Not like the dude had his head down and he cannoned into it. You know what... They should challenge it haha

Could be an opportunity for Stephens. I watched him 2 games back in the reserves and he wasn't inspiring in any way and looked a bit sulky at times, so there is that against him.
Ryan Clarke has been getting good numbers in the Reserves and on form, might be the fill in that works

Rowbottom watches Merret lose the ball, runs past the ball and goes in for a bump. That's been a week every time for a few years now. No chance to contest it

He does get a shove from Mills right before the impact, but it was after he had chosen to bump. He could maybe argue that he would have been able to safely bump had he not been pushed, but I'm not sure that would fly.

I put this in the game autopsy thread but just for ease of access, here's the bump from the other side in slo mo. He accelerates towards Merret when pushed. It seems pretty clear IMO that the real damage was done by the shove. Worth an appeal.

Yeah, I hadn't seen the video from the other angle. Rowbottom has a case saying Mills pushed him into the bump

He doesn't even get him high. Not a suspension.

I think it isn't just on Twitter where Rowbottom would be considered appealing.

Tribunal appeal
Rowbottom: There was no remonstration and there was no free kick either.

Sydney's legal rep: Did you try to bump him?

Rowbottom: No, definitely not. That was not my intention.

Rowbottom: I crossed my arms across my chest so he didn't get the full force of my shoulders, trying to reduce impact for both of us.

Rowbottom says he was intending to tackle Merrett, but once Merrett lost possession of the ball he braced himself for contact, which was "inevitable".

James Rowbottom will give evidence.
