James Rowbottom

The Sydney Swans recruited James Rowbottom with their second selection at the 2018 AFL Draft and the midfield bull impacted from the get-go. The Oakleigh Chargers product made his AFL debut against Richmond at Marvel Stadium in Round 5, 2019 and finished the season with 12 senior games beside his name. Rowbottom also led the NEAFL MVP voting when it was hidden from the public after Round 12. The young Swan is a ball magnet, explosive at the stoppages, an outstanding tackler and a clean user of the footy.

When Rowy was micd up earlier in the season, it showed how much he directed midfield setups and covering for attacking players

The communicators and onfield leaders are the hardest to replace

Except they all do it.

You could say the same about Parker and gulden when they’ve been miked.

It’s simpler imho - he makes tackles and so does Grundy. Our inability to stop the ball exiting stoppages is a problem when he’s not there. An extra stoppage rather than a ball being pumped forwards is a problem especially when the opposition can’t be confidently outmarked as has been the case tin all of our losses bar st kilda. When teams get it forwards fast and bring it to ground or mark it we are stuffed. Daniher ugly hagan amess lynch all cause problems when teams go fast forwards against our defenders.

Rowie just lets that happen less.

Has to be our most important player. Him going hard is what allows the others to shine
Yep. There's a lot of talk, certainly justified, about Heeney, Warner and co being so important, but in my opinion, if Rowie and Parks stand up, that goes a looooooong way towards a Swans victory.

If Rowy doesn't play well on PF or GF day should we make it, then we won't win. But I have little doubt that he won't just keep on keeping on with what he does - even in games where he doesn't get many touches comparatively, he still makes them count - and so often pops up for an important goal, or a critical clearance of congestion etc, just like he did on Saturday.

He is our true barometer!
