James Rowbottom

The Sydney Swans recruited James Rowbottom with their second selection at the 2018 AFL Draft and the midfield bull impacted from the get-go. The Oakleigh Chargers product made his AFL debut against Richmond at Marvel Stadium in Round 5, 2019 and finished the season with 12 senior games beside his name. Rowbottom also led the NEAFL MVP voting when it was hidden from the public after Round 12. The young Swan is a ball magnet, explosive at the stoppages, an outstanding tackler and a clean user of the footy.

James Rowbottom
DOB: 19 September 2000
DEBUT: 2019
DRAFT: #25, 2018 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Camberwell (Vic)/St Kevin's College (Vic)/Oakleigh U18

That long Papley goal he dished to Hayward who went to Paps in the second.

Watch how far and quick/hard Rowbottom has to sprint to make that contest on the replay. ****ing hell

Also feel like he went from unnoticed to just being the easy , Rowbottom is great comment for the media articles this weekend 😂
Good shout.

I think it started as a defensive effort, even though it was him running towards his own forward 50, like shit I've gotta get there, I can't let these three Giants players have this much space to use the ball in. But then the fact he was able to gather, spin and feed the ball back into the corridor for Hayward to run onto completely turned it into the most unlikely of scoring opportunities.

Just a brilliant individual effort really.

Hayward & Papley loved it...

He's gone bananas at centre bounces. The number one centre clearance player in the comp this year, Nick Daicos, is averaging 3.4 for the year. Since the bye, Rowbottom is averaging 6.3.

Heeney, who has been our best first possession player this year, is averaging 2.7 first possessions at centre bounces. Rowbottom's averaging 6 since the bye.

You simply cannot allow a player to be creating that much supply out of the centre. Davies-Uniacke, Bolton, Yeo, sure, maybe even Rowell or Serong. But not someone in our team, with our forward half, and our number of weapons. You will pay.

Early in the season his tackling was vital in helping create turnovers - esp from CB and other stoppages. His other strength is clearances when Grundy is going well.

By no means is he an all round inner mid. He is not elite at all unless he is tackling. Think he only had one to half time yesterday. Unless he is delivering in this area, he is not worth playing.

Did Rowbottom steal your newspaper or something?

He is fresh off close to being BOG last week.

And was poor today. Overrated on todays lack of effort.

And he was nowhere near bog last week.

Well Coaches gave him equal BOG v the Giants.

He was average today, Less effective tackling wise. But Poor is strong, he more turnovers than normal, trying to bash it forward, but he laid what 3rd most tackles, had second most inside 50s, 5 clearances, 8 score involvements, Was good in the second half. If thats a poor outing he has a high standard,

Some claim he is elite, the same some claiming Warner is overrated

He was flogged today.

Floggdd by who?

Elite? Probably not.

Warner is a better player, but Rowbottom is not that far behind, certainly in no danger for his spot, is a key for us

Rowbottom was the 3rd highest rated player on the ground today. 23 disposals, 4 tackles, 5 clearances (3 centre clearances), a goal assist, 8 Score involvements 7 intercept possessions, DE of 69.6% and 15 contested possessions.

If thats a bad game then idk what is because he got given Serong after quarter time or half time (i can't exactly remember) and held Serong to 13 in the last 3 or 7 in the last half of footy

Agree he is a key but only if he plays his specialised tackling role.

Left Serong and Brayshaw largely off pressure.

How about watch the game instead of getting ink on your nose from champion data.

If you can't see he was close to BOG last week I think you and I and the AFL coaches see things differently, thats fine each to their own. But this "specialised tackling role" seems like a bit of an attempt to call him limited. He was average today as I said, but he was involved in some creative stuff, set up goals,

His work in defence was down on the usual sure, but hardly poor imo,

GUH was whacking him when he was dominating tackles but not getting as much ball. It's not a genuine, nor consistent, analysis.

Its like that guy on Twitter John Murphy who called Rowbottom flipping Pathetic the day he had 32 and 6

Rowbottom McLean Mcinerney and Blakey were the only Swans that turned up. If you can't see that then you didn't watch the game.
McInerney?

Replace him with Melican and I’d mostly agree. Though Wicks gets a pass mark from me too, and I thought Papley tried hard to energise the forward line after half time but maybe more energy than composure.

That was just based on a live watch of the game when I was already in a grumpy mood that had nothing initially to do with the footy.
