Sydney FC end marquee mess with Juninho swoop

August 1, 2007

SYDNEY FC's prolonged search for a new marquee player is over, with former Brazilian international Juninho Paulista agreeing to join the club for this season.

Juninho, 34, is believed to have agreed terms last week and is expected to be unveiled by the club on Friday. The former Middlesbrough playmaker is set to make his first public appearance in Saturday night's pre-season match against Newcastle Jets.

Juninho has not played regularly since being released by his Brazilian club, Flamengo, two months ago, and had hoped to return to England. But a failed move to newly promoted Premiership side Derby County has convinced Juninho to join the Brazilian exodus to the A-League, where he becomes Sydney FC's first signing from South America.

While Sydney FC coach Branko Culina had shifted his sights to signing a striker following a failed attempt to recruit Dutch veteran Phillip Cocu, the recent collapse of negotiations with former England forward Robbie Fowler moved Juninho back to the top of the list of targets. It is believed Culina intends to use Juninho in an advanced midfield role, where his record suggests he can contribute a steady stream of goals.

Juninho will be the only foreign marquee player in the competition this season and is the highest-profile player to join the A-League since Sydney's previous marquee signing, Dwight Yorke. The signing is a timely boost for the club following the recent dramas surrounding Socceroos pair David Carney and Mark Milligan, who have made no secret of their desire to move abroad on the eve of the new season. Sheffield United, relegated from the Premiership last season, are believed to have made a formal offer for Carney late yesterday.

Two years ago there were only two Brazilians in the A-League, but this season there will be 11.

Would HECK!! be an understatement?

If that is true good on them, i am suspecting that is the one from Lyon a few years ago? Probably not, as there is a few brazilians circling around with the same name

I crapped myself for a minute, before realising it wasn't the Juninho.

Is there a post in this thread or a web link which has an updated list of all the comings and goings?

Maybe the a-league website mate www.a-league.com.au

in other news http://www.foxsports.com.au/story/0,8659,22170948-23215,00.html

CENTRAL Coast has signed local talent Ian McAndrew for the 2007-2008 A-League season.
The defender, 18, was born and raised on the New South Wales Central Coast, and he is the first graduate of the Mariners' youth academy.
McAndrew, from Wyoming, joins two fellow Central Coast youngsters in Bradley Porter, from Kanwal, and Andrew Redmayne, from Gosford, as the Mariners' three mandatory restricted-age signings.
McAndrew is the eighth signing for season three, after Dean Heffernan, Mile Jedinak, Greg Owens, Sasho Petrovski, Andrew Redmayne, Matt Simon and Matthew Trott.
The Mariners face Perth Glory in a pre-season cup semi-final at Bluetongue Central Coast Stadium in Gosford on Saturday.

Nah it is the Juninho. Just the older one :)

Brazilian (or was it Sth American?) footballer of the Year, World Cup winner, Came second to Zola (was robbed) in the player of the season in the EPL, etc etc.

He was going to be brilliant, but a severe injury just prior to the 1998 World Cup took away some of his pace, and seeing as dribbling is his major asset the injury stopped him from becoming a truly elite player. He should still be too good for the A League though. We'll have to see, but I sure am looking forward to seeing him play in the flesh again. :thumbsu:

So THE "freekick specialist" Juninho is the other one?

A pretty big signing for the Bling and the A-League. As much as you dont want it to become the retirement villiage for older players its good to see names like this come down here and have a run around. Hopefully he doesnt play too well against us but it will be good to see him play nonetheless. Pity it isnt the other 1 but could anyone afford him ?? :D

Central Coast could!

The "free-kick specialist" one is Juninho Pernambucano. He's the Lyon captain.

Turn it up, he's a very influential player.

Premiership player too!

Me turn it up - he is an average player. Hes reasonably easy on the eye - in terms of being nice on the ball but he is terribly slow and lacks the penetration to be a good wide man. Nothing but a decent squad player. Thats just my opinion.

It's only on Tribal Football, so it 99% not likely to happen, but they've said former Boro player Juninho is possibly going to be Sydney's marquee signing. If it happens I'll seriously have to consider following Sydney while he plays for them :D Hope he comes, he'd be sensational in the A League.
I was thinking the same thing. It would pain me greatly to see one of my favourite players playing for a team I just don't like.

Huge conflict for me if it goes through.

That's because Vasilevski is shit.
Only an opinion of someone who follows are shit side.
We will wait to see.
What's that got to do with Adelaide?
We never signed him, chief. :thumbsu:
Fair enough. It was mentioned here that you guys were possibly signing him. I thought it was signed and sealed since he is sort of dud that would fit right in.

Victory signed ex Glory player Daniel Vasilevski.
Been playing at Altona Magic in the midfield I'm told.

Whoever said my hometown of Altona wasn't a fertile breeding ground for top class footballing talent ey? Go on, own up!!
It's a well known fact that the Magic is a veritable production line when it comes to top shelf players... Even if it's homeground is wedged in between the Mobil Refinery and the Werribee train line...

I know some of it is, I've been wanting them to get rid of more of what they did all winter. Alas.

At least DJ Ite has started scoring be it only a tap in.

Scored against Newcastle last week too if you don't mind.

As we all knew, once he got one the floodgates would open for the great man.
