From 2017 onwards the demand for a third WA team will be at the forefront. World class stadium playing just one gane a week won't be enough, combine that with eagles and dockers having biggest home attendance numbers in the afl for consecutive years will give cause for a "Perth" side

Sydney - 4,500,00 population
Perth & Adelaide - 2,000,000 combined population

A 3rd team in Sydney whilst at least 10 years away makes more sense than Perth and Adelaide unless they suddenly have a huge population spike.

If Perth can't support 3 teams, better let the Victorians know they definitely can't support 9 in Melbourne. Gonna have to shut at least 4 down, sorry guys.

Adelaide will never get a third team. It's almost as crowded as Melbourne relative to the population, and is a much slower growing city with its second team having pronounced recent trouble.

Perth might.

Sydney absolutely will.

Tassie will only if North or someone else relocates.

The value of the Sydney market dwarfs all other non Vic states combined. Success there would make the AFL easily the pre-eminent national sport.

They will throw money at it even if it takes 15 years to gain traction, and with good reason.

Vic: 5.8 mil, 10 teams. 580k per team.
NSW: 7.5 mil, 2 teams. 3.75 mil per team
QLD: 4.7 mil, 2 teams. 2.4 mil per team.
WA: 2.6 mil, 2 teams. 1.3 mil per team.
SA: 1.7 mil, 2 teams. 850k per team.
Tas: 515k, 0 teams.

Obviously there are too many teams in Victoria, however getting rid of any is pretty tricky. It would be a very brave AFL admin to do that. More likely they will try and get more teams in NSW, QLD, and maybe WA, and then divide the season up in to two different divisions.

Tassie has fewer people for a team than even crowded Victoria does at the moment, almost no population growth, and won't get a side unless North moves there.

Perth should get a third team, the question is will league politics block it in the short term?
will the existing Perth teams support a third joining eating into future revenue?
will teams in Melbourne block a further shift to WA becoming the economic and attendance powerhouse of the league?
will the struggling clubs block it as they lock to secure draft picks?

much of AFL today is dirty politics, what should be vs what is done are leagues apart.

Comparing NSW population per team with Victoria is apples and oranges.

The vast bulk of sports supporters in NSW do not follow any AFL team - unless it is Sydney in a grand final.

Same with Queensland, but with the Lions.

Another team in NSW would be a financial catastrophe.

Cant happen, I dont have the tools or timber available to me to build a big enough ark to survive the the flood of tears from all the whinging VFL club supporters.

Yeah cos that's the only reason it couldn't happen ...

The point is an expansion market against a captive market. The potential to grow is far far higher in NSW than in WA. You'd get much more TV money if AFL became more popular there, where another Perth side doesn't do much.

Yes, it's not necessarily going to work, but the risk v reward is much much higher. In terms of long term planning it's where the focus will be.

And where do you suggest this third club represent? Sydney, or more regional?

Laughable suggestion.

I can see 4 teams in Sydney/ NSW eventually.

Newcastle might get the 4th gig but that is some time away

Strangely enough, I too can see a team up in the Central Coast/Newcastle area and another down in the Illawarra in the future.

Five teams in NSW ??

22 clubs in the competition.

Now that would be very interesting.

So uh not sure which school you went to but Perth's population is 2.2million and I believe Adelaide's is closer to 1.3million.

Also Sydney's population is closer to 4.8 or 4.9 million nowdays.

Either way, population aside, Sydney is an NRL city. SO even with the larger population I would be wager there would still even be more AFL fans in Adelaide alone than Sydney, let alone Perth.
