A waste of a season?

With the logjam between 4th and 11th going on, various scenarios have been running around in my head as I tracked the two other games tonight. So i got on and did a ladder predictor. Giving us all 3 wins (strangers things have happened! Leigh seems to think we can do it) and being reasonable with other games (a lot of the top 8 seem to play each other) to my surprise, we actually ended up 4th! I'm not saying we are going to make the top 4 - but its not over yet :p

Always bloody next year...that is what was being said last year and probably again next year.

Agree with your sentiments Sausage because all is not well at our club with way too many players happy to rob the club blind by taking huge pay packets and consistently not delivering, but maybe they won't next year:rolleyes:

Yep I agree, That 1.2 million we are paying Brown this season is a disgrace. How can we pay one player that much considering that the salary cap is approximately 8 million. He alone takes up one eighth of our salary cap. I am with you. He is, as you say, robbing the club blind by taking a huge pay packet and consistently not delivering.

2005, Round 22, Vs St.Kilda was probably the most disgraceful performance I have seen from any team on a football field. We lost by 139 points, it could have been 200 points if St.Kilda were playing at their best (from memory Raph Clarke was killing us!)
Gee, thanks for reminding me! Hubby and I flew down for this game with our Canberra and Melbourne mates joining us. I was tired and pregnant but my Uni mate, a 2nd generation Saints' fan, was absolutely loving it! It was such a humiliating loss for the Lions. Walking out of there in Lions' gear, swamped by a sea of Saints' fans all the way back to the hotel, are such happy memories. NOT!:(

Thankfully, two of our last 3 crucial games are being played at the Gabba so I have every faith that a win is more than possible.

I wouldn't think one J.Brown would be robbing the club blind. Easily the best player on the list and paid accordingly.
Considering he has won us numerous games off his own boot, the leadership he gives, the marketability he has and the example he sets to the younger guys, i'd say he has earnt his money ten fold.

Had the results gone the other way in 2-3 games we wont be having this thread here.

This team has the potential/players to be right up there.

no need to panic or do a clean-out.

Geelong didnt do it in 2006, Bulldogs didnt do it in 2007. No need for knee-jerk reactions here.

With respect, the opening statement is an "if only". Let's stick to the actual situation.

Also, for those who dislike my posting "negatives" or "when things have gone bad" - I read alot here and see enough gushing threads over how well we are playing (when we are playing well) that I don't feel the need to add my 2 cents worth.

I am not advocating a clean out - I am postulating HOW the coaching staff MIGHT respond to a season which has been one of underachievement.

Spme people debate whenther :

(a) we have in fact underperformed and/or
(b) that if so, what do we need to change, if anything.

Lastly, I cheerfully admit I may be wrong or reactive. But as I am not on the coaching staff or in any way associated with the playing list, my recommendations and postings are merely the musings of member :)

Plenty of positives this season.

For example, we've managed to meet a whole raft of Brisbane Lions supporters on BigFooty who hadn't emerged until the season took a bad turn.

to be fair i joined after the Adelaide victory when I was excited, and have decided to stick around through the rough patch, knowing we'll do better next year

It got worse - 2005 remember what was going on in England at the time ? We were losing the Ashes and I got a phone call at the ground from a Pommie mate ( in UK .. at a party with all his friends ) to give me heaps just as we were getting thrashed. Just held up the phone so they could hear more humiliation !! Could not take a trick. DJ's last game too.

While i am as disapointed as every member on here by how our season has fallen away and the fact that we likely wont be in the finals this year. I am taking a lot of solace in some of the new lions that we have seen this year.

I really like the mix of young players we have coming through in Proud, Dalziell, Collier, Henderson, Berger and Clark.

Put these guys on top of a young list of Merret, Patfull, Roe, Jmac, Begley, Corrie, Sherman, Adcock, Hooper, Riska and Brennan and that has the makings of a very good team.

For the first time since our premiership years i feel like i can see the plan forward for the next generation. We saw against the Cats this year that this new pride can be competitive and with a little seasoning can be a lot more than that.

As a rebuilding team, I think it might be time to let go of some of our youngsters who haven't shown great signs of improvement. And it looks like days might be numbered for poor Copeland :(. Might also be time to let go of McGrath who hasn't really had too many great games at the club.

I agree... partly. I don't mind off loading some of the 21-25yo players if they have shown no promise. McGrath is one of those because his good games are too rare for my liking. In saying that, I prefer him as a small forward.

This is slowly becoming version II of the '2009 - Ins and Outs' thread........
