If I were you, I would rethink that post. CTE is not in any way a laughing matter.

In my view CTE poses a huge threat to our game.

Just this week we have seen Angus Brayshaw retiring due to the damage he has suffered from a number of concussions. You should be well aware that last year Paddy McCartin, who had so much ability, but was never able to properly display it due to his concussion issues, was forced to retire. Others forced out of the game recently through concussion include Paul Seedsman, Marcus Adams, Max Lynch, Liam Picken and of course, Shane Tuck's suicide is linked to brain injury from too many concussions.

This is the third significant head injury that Jy Simpkin has copped in the last 12 months and I suspect that we might now see him sidelined for several weeks. It's not too big a stretch to think that if he cops another one this year, he too might be looking at retirement.

I don't think that Jimmy Webster would have ever imagined that he was going to collect Simpkin in the way he did. I've watched enough of him over the years to not see him as a thug. But unfortunately today he had a monumental brain fade in leaving the ground, turning partially side on and tucking his elbow in to collect Simpkin to the head and with a fair amount of force. From the TV footage there is no question that Jy was quite significantly dazed, if not concussed.

That is exactly the sort of act that the AFL cannot allow to continue in the game and irrespective of Webster's past record, he has to cop a quite significant penalty, in the order of 6 weeks or more. (If for no other reason, bumps of the nature we saw today, have to disappear from the game, because of the fears so many parents have about their children playing the game and in some instances they are encouraging their children to look at playing other non-contact sports.)

There are already some quite significant legal actions against the AFL because of CTE/Concussion damage, and there are likely to be many more in the years ahead.

Leaving aside for just one moment the likelihood that many players already are/will not enjoy the best of health post their AFL careers, which is quite simply a terrible outcome for them, the financial cost to the game of any successful legal actions, may lead the AFL to decide to reduce or even ban some forms of physical contact. You might say that will never happen, but who knows what lies ahead in an increasingly litigious world.
True. CTE is a major issue for WAGS of North Players.

We all get your point , CTE is serious - but it will never be wiped out of the sport due to it being a contact sport. The game has totally changed from 10yrs ago to attempt to solve the problem - they take out the physical clashes and it wouldn't be AFL - people who play the game know the risks the same as in boxing or mma.

You don't need to preach to us we have had more than our amount of CTE cases.
Frawley , McCartin and everyone is fully aware but Webster is no thug.

The hide an arrogance of this twat lecturing us on CTE when our wellness centre is named after a favourite son after he committed suicide due to CTE.

We lost Paddy to concussion and Koby Stevens to concussion, but some Neanderthal from domestic violence land needs to mansplain it.

To make him a scrape goat who has been on the receiving end many times, it was a mistake for sure but 12 weeks when guys like Gaff , Hall get less for striking is a joke.
Also head knocks will always be in the game , it's a contested sport.
Time should be judged on past record.
I stand to be corrected but I don’t think Gaff had ever been reported much less suspended when he whacked Brayshaw. It didn’t matter for him and it shouldn’t matter now.

If Simpkin isn’t concussed (and that’s a big if) it will be very interesting what the mro does. I can’t recall anything short of an actual punch being deemed deliberate so it’s reckless or careless and if there’s no concussion then the impact can’t be severe. Both those things saved Kozi last year (I think that was was one of the worst I’d ever seen).

Having said all that, mro and tribunal is a ****ing crap shoot. On merit for me it’s 6-8 anything more would be harsh and anything less would be generous.

He was excellent today and good on him... But c'mon if he's in our I side mid rotation I don't think it says much for our list
If he was a top 20 pick you would be thrilled with what he is showing.
It looked like he was out cold. He's had a history with concussion too so they may have been taking precautions but he looked completely out of it on the live telecast.
Mate said At half time on commentary that north via their media manager have said they believe Simpkin to either have a very minor or not have been concussed at all.

A lot of the media hype this up as well, which would influence the tribunal.
That's one of my biggest gripes about the media. Just watch the difference when one of their love children does something that's suspension worthy. Straight away they'll talk the incident down, trying to downgrade the classification to grade it in the realm of a fine. Saying things like "we don't want our stars missing games for that." They do it all the time.
They've regularly applied their skewed logic over the year to incidents involving the likes of Buddy, Selwood, Lynch, Danger, Dusty etc.
Whilst journeymen players like Webster aren't offered the same courtesy. Webster should get 4-6 no doubt. Anything more will be the usual Saints tax. I'll just watch with interest if a star player does something similar and see if the media wan.kers are consistent in their judgement. I know they won't be.

Why is this an issue??

Doesn’t that just mean a ✅ for our development?

Of all the suburban clubs the saints supporters really seem to love getting down to their club/former home ground the most. RSEA looked packed out today. Always is. Would a stand be on the cards in the next 5 years?

This CTE talk is boring. All the players know the risks now. Head knocks will always happen, they can’t be legislated out of the game. Doesn’t matter if it’s a 25 week suspension, nobody considers that in the moment.

It’s people like you who advocate for changes who will be responsible for the destruction of the sport. Sport can be dangerous, it’s part of what makes it exciting.

If you want touch football, watch touch football. But stop trying to advocate for the AFL to become contact free.

Don’t believe the AFL would ever allow us to play a genuine men’s match for 4 points and the women’s games don’t draw crowds that need a stand.

It’s a shame there is no overblown hope nor promise surrounding Norf like there was Essedon last year, there may be mayonnaise levels of spice when we meet next otherwise lmao

They have some real "my mum is also my cousin" types in their supporter base.

If North supporters were genuine about the issues surrounding head contact and CTE they would've mentioned the Jye Simpkin punch to Brad Hill's head immediately before he copped the Webster hit.

 This is how you do it lads.

It's sad for sure , but did he get the help he needed.
A lot of these kids get all the mouth treatment from the club but nothing that makes them tow the line.
So people you can't control for sure but I've seen many cases where there been no controls on any of the kids.
For instance having the kid live with a mentor like we have done with Wood.
I always remember a kid at the Hawks who was drafted he never lasted the preseason - under Clarko - went home and was busted for break and enter etc - couldn't a club attempt to put him with a guy that he respected and could be used as a mentor.
He was put in the to hard basket and given the flick - another wasted talent.

Of course family upbringing is a big factor , but knowing clubs who pick up these kids they need to take some responsibility in what they do away from the club , because most of the time they are moving state and the club needs to cover for the family and not just give them a list of rules not to break and some mouth service which I can honestly say our club seems to be doing far more for the youth at the club than most , so our development department needs a pat on the back.

Like how we have been putting kids with Hill and Wood.

Gerald Waterly haha.
Where have you been Gringo? Feel like you've been quieter than normal lately.
Missing some of your fabled metaphors. All I've seen is that you 'know a guy' here, and 'asked a guy' there re: history of 'snt kilda'
He's legit the mix of Mr. Bean and Kramer. Ask him if he knows Bob Sacamano - you won't be disappointed.
