if he's getting paid it, then yes
We have 500 on the table from all reports
750k is the highest ive seen to pry him away.

these are 4-5 year deals too.
You can see why i'd be wanting a decent 1st rounder for him. If a suitor sees fit to pay him that much, pony up the trade collateral too please.

Hold on a mo ..........

A player your club only wants to pay $500K is worth a decent first rounder ??

Just to give this stat a bit of colour - hes got a contested defense loss % of 40% which is 123rd in the league (27th amongst general defenders - excl key defenders). He's 6th in the league for total 1v1s (number 1 amongst general defenders - and clear of the next best by 20) - interestingly Carlton has spots 1,2 & 6 in total 1v1's which show how bad our defensive transition has been this year.

On this basis he has lost 60 x 40% = 24 1v1's this year - this is the most in the AFL. I'd be interested to know how many of these were against his diretc opponent vs when he's had to cover for a teammate on turnover....unfortunately this stat isnt recorded.
Constantly covering for Jones when he goes flying around like a headless chook.

But Carlton would be getting a player 3 years older or around 2/3s as much football out of him.

Good HBFs get traded of 2nd rounders eg Howe, Hibberd, Docherty.

Struggle to think of when one was traded for a first rounder.

Spot on.
Very few would be worth a 1st, Howe this year before injury maybe. Then Shep, Stewart, Ridley and Vlaustin but they all have the ability to defend small and tall and have elite disposal, Saad has one of those things.

Carltons first pick will end up being pick 10 or 11 with jamarra, Campbell and crows compensation. That seems about right.
no way bombers will accept second rounder for a bloke who has come top 3 in b& f twice in a row
cant see how the tigers would fit his salary in cap

Yes the cap is tight at the moment so we’d need to back end his contract (keeping in mind Riewoldt Cotchin and Rance won’t be around in 3 years). But we could accommodate him.

Having said that I don’t think he’ll end up at Richmond and was a little surprised when I read we are one of four clubs linked to him.

He’s a good player but 6-700k for a hbf is overs imo, particularly when you already have some very good small backs

I honestly cant see the need for Saad at Richmond,I like him as a player but we already have Houli , Short , Baker and a bunch of others in similar roles in reserve who can play similar roles already at the Club and he wont be cheap in regards to $$$ or picks.

fits in nicely, but last team that needs him. Which is good, cos if you had the cash on the table, he'd be mad not to join you.

Hopefully he stays. We had two absolute weapons off half back. Losing one is bad enough. both going in the space of a few weeks is a disaster.

yep
Case in point - Frawley was on 550k and got pick 3 as part of the FA compensatiion
So i'd say yes. it's not an unreasonable ask.
You realise the salary cap went up. From 2016 to 2017 the salary cap jumped 20% and goes up 1.2%-2% every year.

Frawley was a free agent in 2014. Just using the 20% jump in 2017 and no other increase $550k back then is $660k today. With the other yearly increases it’s probably closer to $700k

So Essendon offering Saad $500k today would be roughly $200k short of Frawley.

It doesn’t matter what he is objectively or reasonably worth. Dodo is sure to employ the same tactics of demanding ridiculous overs and dragging things on. I wouldn’t begrudge him for it if it means you ultimately get the best possible deal, but sometimes it’s cutting your nose to spite your face. If they’re going to go down a rebuild path, then he needs to recalibrate his approach

yep, but our offer isnt the one that would determine the FA comp.
The offers we've seen reported range from 650k to 750k. If he was a FA, we'd be getting pick 7 for him. So i can see us holding out for more than the 2nd we paid for him a few years back

I don't know if the chat in here is legit about Essendon only offering him 500k p/y, but surely he is worth more than that? I know there are some fruity contracts at Tullamarine due to the clubs saga issues (Hooker, Hurley et al.) but surely a team like theirs doesn't have a tight cap?
