It's a simple equation.
If he's knocked back 8 for Saad and 48 (which is more than reasonable) and tries to block us or trump us from doing a pick swap to try and explore other ways of getting this deal done, then our offer changes to reflect that inability to be more flexible.
He blocks our moves, we alter our approach. Pretty simple. It's part of the game. Basically it's saying 'don't try to stop us from splitting our pick'.
Of course Dodoro won't like it. That's the point.

Sure if it’s actually true, a lot of stuff gets reported as “fact” when it comes to the trade period.

I’d actually look at it as a better move for us, we can then use one of those 1sts on Caldwell and the other and next years 1st for Dunkley.

Why wouldn’t we make a trade to benefit us more?

If it is actually true on that trade 8 for Saad and 48 I see it as fair just FYI.

On a more serious note, if Dodoro accepted 29 for Fantasia (which most consider reasonable, if not overs), would 8 and 51 for Saad and 29 be fair?
I think so. Values Saad at about 14 on points, which is still overs (slightly) in my eyes.

I think Saad is worth a mid-teens pick personally, so I'd say it's around the mark.

Of course, but as mushrooms, all we can do is hypothesise based on what's 'reported'.

My take is 8 is overs but not by as much as everyone is saying given the amount of academy players this year and the lack of intel.

Essendon should push for a package worth around pick 15 this year. Would say Saad is worth around pick 20 in a normal year.

If Essendon jump in to snag the pick swap away from us, then our offer for Saad just changes.
If it's currently 8 for Saad and 48 (values Saad at about pick 12 on points), then it changes to 8 and 51 for Saad and 19, which then values him at about pick 21.
Would seem silly for Essendon to cut their own nose off like that.

I don't believe very many trade decisions are made on the basis of points equivalence. If any. Draft points as we have them are an abominable glue on that attempts to impose some semblance of order on F/S and NGA academy selections.

As a tool for making a judgement from outside the tent on what players and draft picks are worth in general, I would suggest they are fairly much useless.

The "value" (maybe call it desirability) of any given pick or combination of picks is going to vary substantially from club to club according to whatever other deals or objectives they may have in mind, and how the pick(s) combine with the cards the Club already has in it's hand.

I still think this is overs.
I don't disagree. when Saad was first mentioned as possibly leaving Essendon (can't even remember if there was any talk of Carlton at that stage), my initial assessment was that he was worth between 18-25. I still maintain that to a certain degree, but for where we're at currently with our list build and expectations heading into next season, we have to start being less concerned about what we're paying to bring players in who we consider an important inclusion. Obviously shouldn't be throwing picks away left, right and center, but overpaying slightly shouldn't be a concern.
Our public blueprint was to hit the draft hard for a few years, then target established players to fill gaps and round out the list. If that's where we're at, then we shouldn't be too concerned about what picks we take to the draft.
I'm not overly impressed with using 8 on a player like Saad, but if it can be balanced out somewhat with what comes back, I can ignore that for the bigger picture.

Have Carlton actually offered pick 8 for Saad and pick 40ish? How can Essendon say no? Like wtf?

How can Fantasia on one hand be worth more than 28 but then we value pick 48 as too valuable to give up.

I'd do that deal grudgingly, we don't need to panic. Dodoro will be defiant and stubborn until next Wednesday afternoon, its modus operandi.
Should Adam Saad enter the PSD no way will Dodoro expend p7 to redraft a disgruntle ex team member.

We have a bit on our plate champ, get a move on! ;)

Perhaps Carlton should leave a fair offer until the last 10 minutes before the deadline and **** up whatever other dominoes Essendon has waiting to fall.

And then claim it as a triumph even if the deal falls over as a result, because we sabotaged another Club's intentions and that's a win.

It's the Dodo way.

I think Carlton should just grab him through the pre season draft. Saad is good, but pick 8? nah

They held their nerve with Jack Martin. They should do it again here.
