Behind paywall but the noise is starting

They'll clearly make a strong play for him

Isn't is disrespectful to try to openly poach a current coach? I've never heard of that before. Surely we would do a slap down of some sort given our position.

The North rumours have been around for a bit, given Noble has had one foot out the door for months now.

Simmo and Nisbett have both publicly shot them down, but then what else could they do really?

I wouldn’t be surprised if he winds up at North one day. I’d be very surprised if he broke contract and replaced Noble.

Didn't Freo do this with the Harvery /Lyon scenario?

As they should.

They wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't at least ask the question and put the feelers out.

I have no problem with them doing so.

This is pretty much the only scenario where I think it’s fair game to tap up an opposition coach.

North don’t want an interim solution, they want their next long term coach. If they think that’s Simmo, then go for it.

No good getting in some other coach, only for Simmo to get sacked at the bye next season. They’d be a bit annoyed, Simmo would be a bit annoyed probably.

Simmo’s well within his rights to say no I’m going to stay because I think I’m the guy to see this through, but honestly I’d rather shit clubs tap up coaches on the hot seat rather than trying to poach some club on the rise or coach at the peak of their powers. Just makes sense for everyone.

Ask the question, but the answer is no.

North are perfectly entitled to ask the question and tbh, they’d be negligent if they didn’t

It’s then up to Simpson and WCE to have some open discussions (between themselves not publicly) on his position

There can be no guarantee of tenure beyond 2024 when his current contract expires because it remains to be seen if he can right a ship that has lost its rudder and is taking on water.

The club also has to consider what it might do post 2024 and whether Simpson would remain our best option even if things do improve in 2023 and 2024

By then he would have been senior coach for 11 years. Malthouse was coach for 10 years and Worsfold 12 years. I’ve said before that it’s extremely rare for a successful coach to enjoy success again at the same club with a completely revamped list so it’s a brave soul who’d suggest that Simpson is capable of defying history. And I like Simpson, some may even call me a fanboi

So here’s the thing, the timing might not be quite right, but Simpson may have the opportunity to get a coaching contract beyond 2024 whilst we get the opportunity to install a new coach who can reenergise the list and develop a new game style with a new group of players. We’d need to get the next Simpson/Worsfold though rather than the next Judge

For me, in an ideal/fantasy world, Simpson leads us back to the top of mountain but him leaving to coach North may not be the worst thing in the long run

You've nailed the situation. I would much prefer of Simmo left this year for North. He might improve for a few seasons, but unless he can completely reinvent himself, he will become stale and outdated (if he isn't already).

If he goes this season, we get a chance for new blood and new ideas. Look at Collingwood, they had a similar year last year to us this year. Finished 2nd, vets were written off, no young talent etc, now they're almost a lock for finals. Their list is far worse than ours: pretty thin on KPP, key midfielders getting old, forward line bog average. Amazing what a new gameplan and buy-in from the players could do.

9 years as coach with 1 flag and 2 GF appearances is a decent record that many clubs wish they had but it could all line up with Simmo getting a long term contract at the he played in 2 flags and us not having to pay him out if it goes pear shaped next year. I think he will think long and hard about it over the next few weeks.

Lets say Simmo has decided to go home who do we look at?

Schofield would be the most obvious choice. Assuming he and Knights get on, Schofield with Knights as senior assistant holds some appeal

Jaymie Graham and Dean Cox would also be candidates.

Beyond that look at the names being thrown around for the North job and it’d be a similar list

We wouldn’t have trouble getting applications

Blake Caracella from the rookie coaches would be one that I would like us to consider, if Simmo decided to move.

Big call for Simmo to walk away with two years left. I'd prefer it If he did leave as its better for us to start with a clean slate next season.

Still can't see the situation changing, he does run the risk of getting sacked next season if things continue to go to hell on field like this season I suppose.

Even if Simmo is leaving in one way or another, this year, next, end of his contract: I think it’s better to start the really shitty early days of the rebuild with your existing coach. Get the new one in once you’ve done the ugly part of the floor to ceiling rip up and the first year of drafting, then bring the new one in to start shaping the list in his image once it’s actually all in place and ready to build. Chew up the old coach while you demolish and leave the incoming coach fresh and ready to be a fan favourite as he builds it up.

I don't understand this club. Every team but WC in the league would have sacked their coach with Simpson's past 2 years. He got lucky once and wasn't able to back it up having the best team in the league for at least 2, if not 3 years, yet the club believes he is good just because he got lucky once

You need to go touch some grass mate.

We never had the best team in the league. What crack were you smoking that made you believe this?
