Not 5, that's a huge risk.
It’s isn’t really. He’ll then be out of contract the same year as Laird and Crouch is a year and a half younger. Will be younger than when Cripps, Coniglio and Wines come out of contact in 2026 as well.

Smith is 3 years older and comes out of contract 2 years before.

I think people forget how young Matt is.

It's a risk when you need a new midfield

not really. I see Sloane as a permanent forward to finish out his career. Keays can also play forward but he can also very much play a tagging role as needed. Laird and Crouch + Pedlar, Schoenberg and another mid rotate through the guts and Centre. It may be that Keays is overtaken by another player in the next season or 2 - I love his work ethic and attitude, but we may unearth a mid with extra polish in possession, or it may be that Sloane is only here for another season or 2 before retiring

He'll be 27 in the early rounds of next year.

Article is suggesting we will listen to offers for Crouch and Talia, and we haven’t offered Lynch a contract and are unlikely to do so.

Talia is full free agent, we have no opportunity to match. Crouch and Lynch we don't get the opportunity to see other offers under the RFA guidelines. This is our club not learing SFA from Brad Crouch last year. The first strong message you get regarding other offers is when you're presented with an actual playing contract between your player and another club and you then have the right to match. We don't see their offers until they've actually signed on as a player with another club. Every other discussion is just about $ and terms happening in the ether.

The problem is that most of the improvement shown earlier this year was on the back of our senior players. The younger players, for the most part, haven't made meaningful contributions.

Butts has been very good all season, and has claimed a few decent scalps along the way.
Sholl was excellent early, but has burned out badly. Give him time, and he'll be fit enough to run out a full season.
Schoenberg is probably the most consistent of our midfield group, and the only one who has made real contributions at the centre bounces.

The rest of them still have a long way to go, if they're to pick up the mantle when the likes of Seed/Tex/Sloane retire.

After Pyke destroyed the relationship, he then went on and failed to develop the players underneath the 'best 22'. Nick's inherited a group that distrusted the club and also a huge experience gap. What we achieved in 2020 belongs to Don Pyke, Brett Burton, that Fagan dimwit and our very own Roo. As much as I think Nicks isn't a premiership coach, he didn't deserve the spoon against his name, that ignominy belongs to others.

No contract offer for Lynch and unlikely to be offered one?

hopefully, but seeing as they love him at the club and he's an AFLW coach, he'll go public with his desire for one more year. And guess what will happen after that?

I can't remember a player of Matt Crouch's calibre ever moving for a second round pick, even with free agency compensation

I can't remember a pure stoppage accumulator ever being a key cog in a flag. We had Thommo for ever punching out 30+ each week whilst being slow and decent by foot. The slow, safe accumulator is like an elite ruck, it's a role that seems weirdly devoid when players take the stage to collect their premiership medallions.

Sloane will retire, like Thommo did, as an opening bounce, stoppage midfielder. You need to not apply logic against ingrained inherent history. It's no different to Mackay being named on the field when most games he starts on the bench. There's a culture/philosophy that isn't grounded in elite performance that determines selection and strategy decisions. It's been going on for years, it's quite easy to predict.

As much as I don't mind keeping Crouch, I can't deal with a midfield of Crouch, Keays, Laird and Sloane for the next 3 years.
Replying to my own comment, if we keep all of the above, I'd be moving Sloane forward, Laird back and keeping Mrouch and 2 youngsters in the middle with Keays off the bench.

I'll spew if I see any combo of the above 4 in the middle at the same time next year.

Good news if true
Great servants for the club but time to move them on
