how are these great figures exactly. the game has been in queensland for a century and the AFL/VFL has been there 30 years. These ratings are acceptablle at best. Not great.

Besides Finals/Grand Final, there has rarely ever been over 70k watching a neutral AFL game in Brisbane. Feel free to look back, but you will be left disappointed.

Also, losing to NRL by only 5 thousand viewers on a foxtel broadcast is a huge success for the AFL. Stop trying to downplay these figures here.

I wouldn't be so sure about that - they've placed that article in their 'Rugby' section.
And League, like Union, is a form of Rugby, the article clearly distinguishes it as Rugby League. It's not like they have a union section and a league section like the BBC etc. In the north of England people just call the game rugby, not rugby league. Union has largely appropriated 'rugby' for themselves, particularly in Australia and NZ.

Which again shows what you know about Sydney, next to nothing.

IMO there are millions of people in Sydney who have no interest in Rugby League or RU or any sport for that matter and probably don't know or whatsmore care about the difference between the poor mans rugby and the rich one.

How long have you lived in Sydney for ?.

Most Americans have at least heard of rugby - but there wouldn't be one in a hundred Americans that would know there's 2 different versions. The placement of that article amongst a bunch of RU articles reinforces that.

You dont need to live in Sydney for long to realise its a different place for sport than southern cities. AR is popular from the leafy suburbs to the fibro suburbs. Sport is more defined by social strata in Sydney.
I had over 4 years in the place & lived/worked in a few areas. Its a different place to Melbourne. Sport is not the all consuming thing. SOO is big for a short period. The media pump it up relentlessly.
Not much else really does it. People are busy living their lives in a very expensive place. The Western suburbs really are a different place. I worked out their a bit. I liked the multicultural thing. The different streets, shops, foods. It may be a bit different now I guess.

Again Brisbane outrate Sydney easily. Sydney seem to be indifferent to all sports atm

I think a lot of people think per capita that football is far more popular in Brisbane than in Sydney, which i would have agreed with until quite recently, IMO no matter what the ratings show i think it has become quite close.

At grass roots level which must at some point reflect the interest in the game and therefore ratings Brisbane is way ahead at senior grass roots numbers of teams than Sydney but at junior level Sydney appear to be ahead.

That interest in Sydney however really seems to be in a couple of spots.

However in Brisbane it seems to be more widely spread.

Maybe that impacts on ratings which attempt to interpret interest across the whole of the city.

Even if combine Brisbane and GC and SC juniors, they still come in lower now than Sydney juniors which claims about 13,000.

Yes i would agree with that, however Brisbane is more like the Southern Capitals for sport.

I lived there for a number of years as a kid and then returned again for 3 years as an adult, i was actually born there in Paddington.

That 62,000 crowd will only be topped if the scoreboard end is filled in with a stand but apparently that is never going to happen do to heritage issues.

It'll happen one day when port and the crows are each turning thousands of fans away every week. As it stands, outside of the showdowns, there is probably no need for at least a decade or two.

I'd argue its the same for the GC. Its not a sports city like other AR cities. People live different lives. History shows that sport isn't a big part of that. Certainly the sports club failure rate on the GC shows that.
The AFL will simply keep throwing money, but for how long?.

And Im saying that after thirty years anyone who thinks these ratings are great is fooling themselves.

Is it really though. And Im not new to tv ratings. Im not downplaying anything.

I have to disagree here, i think behind the ostentatious high rise there is a very big normal suburban group of families, and growing, i think it will turn out OK, i also think the AFL cant lose because many southern families travel in the southern winter to the GC and whilst there get there footy fix, the fixtures seem to prove it, you can guarantee that a big Melbourne club will be on at the GC over southern school holidays. ( havent looked at fixtures this year though :) )

In QLD i would have thought per capita the GC is the strongest region for footy.

Just because other sports for whatever reason have thrown in the towel the AFL wont.
