Adrian Dodoro: Football’s Biggest Fraud IMO

I remember thinking at the time that st kilda were get shafted in the Carlyle deal giving up pick5 I’m glad we did now getting greasham over Francis has turned into a massive win for us and that’s not even counting Carlyle Essendon have had some real shite luck with there draft picks over the last decade!

Yeah but generally players who make it in the AFL as midfielders have played a fair bit of midfield as juniors. It's a position which takes a fair bit of training and experience to get around, being a 360 degree position which is complex.

Like Vlastuin played all over as well. Was the Vic metro captain I believe and was a bit of a utility in junior years a la Francis. But has only really made it as a backman.

Sure but you don’t know until you try it. We know he’s going to be an okay defender. But who really cares, we’ve got others there who can play his role and match his output.

If he's bad defensively, how is putting him in the midfield help? IMO he seems not physical enough to be accountable and isn't aware enough. Two issues which won't go away playing midfield.
He’s good at defending at ground level, he can get lost under the high ball with his peeling off instincts. His physicality is good until he loses that separation.

Oh a lot of players can build a tank, that just requires a lot of endurance training. It's the grasp of the position that I doubt Francis will ever have. Again, Vlastuin's problem wasn't that he wasn't athletic enough, he's actually a good runner, it's just that he didn't have the instincts to play the position. I doubt Francis has them too. I just don't think you play players who don't know what they're doing in the most important part of the ground. And given the contested 360 nature of the midfield, it's a difficult position to do well in.

I also wonder, if he is played in the guts who goes out.

It comes back to acceptable loss. Right now Francis as a defender isnt offering us much more than Ambrose or Gleeson would. We could lose him in a trade and our performance wouldn’t be hindered or improved. At most he’ll generate a second rounder in a trade.

That isn’t going to help the side especially with the draft being so compromised. The greatest risk with him is to do nothing. As for who he’d replace in the midfield, no one. Some teams rotate 7-8 blokes through a game and we struggle to do it with 5. Need to get better with that.

I'd throw Hurley in there as well. He killed it as a forward as a junior and I would have really liked to see how we went as a forward at AFL level.

Hurley was named at Full Back in the 2007 TAC Cup team of the year and at CHB in the 2008 TAC Cup team of the year, and played his entire junior career as a backman. Not sure when he "killed it as a forward as a junior" .......

A general rule. If a kid is good enough to make the AFL it’s pretty much guaranteed they’ll dominate wherever they play as a junior. Doesn’t mean they are AFL level at every position though.

Quite true, however Hurley is quoted as saying he played all of his junior footy as a backman.

How can you know that? There was talk that Carlton would have to part with pick 1. We do know Carlton were willing to offer significantly more money.

GWS had all the power at the trade table with being Shiel was contracted. 2 firsts and a second coming back is about par for similar level deals imo.
Personally happy we didn't burn 2 firsts and a mill plus a year on Sheil. Would be watching Max King running about in a GWS jumper while Sheil has 25 ineffectual dinky posessions.

Essendon offered more than what Carlton were prepared to, and we certainly weren't willing to use two first round draft picks.
Yeah you would've. You guys flew him to Noosa on a private jet to meet all the heavy hitters...If he had've nominated you guys, no doubt you would've traded two first rounders.
Or did you guys fly Jack Newnes to Noosa as well?

Carlton weren't giving up pick 1 for Shiels. The offer was 2019 first round pick. Carlton's first round picks were always going to be seen to be worth more than EFC's due to ladder position.

Definitely drafted as a backman. I do remember one game early on in his career where he kicked 4 or 5 against the Hawks at the G including a 50m goal on his opposite foot and just thinking to myself he'll be a very good defender but could be something really special as a forward. Guess we'll never know now.

There was a game against Stkilda in his third year where he had 13 score involvements before getting injured two minutes before half time. Tonight Graham had 10 for the most on the ground for context, last week Hawkins had 12 in the most dominant forwards game of the year. His body wouldn’t hold up such was the way he attacked the ball but he would have been a great forward.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge Hurley played a reasonable amount of junior footy as a forward but played both his underage and overrage years as a defender in the championships which was why he was named in the AA team in defence.

Had one or two matches at AFL level where he dominated as a forward, but settled in defence and was never going to be moved once he’d established himself as one of the premier key defenders in the league. Would have been an equally good CHF in the Josh Kennedy mould had they left him there.

Nah Hurley was given plenty of games forward but he can’t jump, broke his wrists so his marking dropped off and kept getting soft tissue injuries. Very much a failed forward

After his Freo heroics he deserves one.

Dodoro has made some mistakes but who hasnt. Expectations are high when you represent a team who have had such success and won 15 grand finals (2nd most successful in history)
