He kicked the ball after the siren. You cant pay free kicks after the siren, so surely you cant pay 50’s?
That's not at all the case. Why then did the Sydney player bother to stand behind the mark when Prestia took his kick? Should have just run up and tackled him hey.

The rules state….

A 50 cannot be payed after the siren.
A similar situation happened earlier in the year to the pies and the ump was heard to say on the mic “I wish I could but the rules say I can’t!”

So as soon as the siren went….no 50 can be paid.

No point going at the umps.
How about we direct the vitriol to the AFL?!?
That makes sense. So next time someone has a shot after the siren just run over the mark and smother it. 50 can't be paid.

I think the biggest issue with the last free kick is that it looked and sounded like the umpire was asking the video umpire through the ear piece if it should be a 50m penalty.

Make the decision yourself. Don’t ask for assistance as that’s never the case at any other point in the game for a regular free kick.

Can’t pick and choose. It’s one rule for all or nothing.

that rule was ignored completely when freo were awarded the win against the saints in tassie after a drawn game. afl overruled the result and that very rule in doing so.
If memory serves me correctly, the timekeepers were in error there and not the umpires - in that they didn't continue to sound the siren until it had been acknowledged by one of the field umpires.

(As an adjunct to that, the timekeeper not sounding the siren was in error also because he is supposed to be checking to make sure things are being done correctly when he is not in charge of the clock/siren).

So it was a completely different situation.

It's a joke, it shouldn't matter when the free occurs for the umpires to call 50 m for the ball being kicked away. Prestia should of been given the opportunity to have a shot at goal after the siren, he may or may not kick it but Warner's behaviour dictates that he deserves the chance to try.

There are no grounds for this, per the rulebook.

  • Was play delayed?
No, as the siren had sounded and thus Prestia could not advance the play beyond taking a shot at goal. This is the key difference, it is why the fifty would be paid in general play but not after the final siren. Because play cannot be advanced, his only option is a shot at goal. In general play, Prestia could've kicked inboard, or i50 - or anything actually.
  • Did Warner act in an unsportsmanlike manner?
Nope, he kicked the ball into the crowd in the heat of the moment in celebration of a tightly contested win in front of a home crowd.

Not to mention it'd be the silliest fifty we've ever seen paid - we complain about the game being over-officiated yet I see more nuffs on here campaigning for the fifty than I see people supporting the non-decision.

Is it still 50 if the player runs over the mark after the siren?
In that case wouldn’t it be a matter of offering the guy kicking another shot if they missed?

Not sure, just spitballing it as I cant recall it happening before.

Richmomd players arguing against the umpire would be a reversal during a game

cost us a 12 point win,swans free and a 50

in all seriousness its pathetic their players there trying to umpire, and their fans sulking arent much better, they had the rub of the green most of the night

Isn’t play over when the umpire hears the siren, not when he signals it as it takes a second or two for the signal?

That’s why they alwys consult on tight end of quarter calls as to whether they heard it.
Yes that's correct. They are obliged to blow the whistle and call time but the game is over when they hear the siren.

There was a stop in play and Richmond players demonstrated dissent so I'd be filthy if I was swans fan, should have had a free reversed and a free after the siren.
sliding doors stuff.
had the umpire agreed with the controlling umpire “yep that’s 50”, Reidwolt wouldn’t be doing that, and every chance 18 swans p”layers are instead exploding at the umpire.
Jack realised that unless he changed his decision (remembering he over ruled the controlling umpire) they had no real chance anyway

He didn't go upstairs guys. He was talking to the other field umpire (who paid the free kick) but was using the headset to do so due to the noise.

Arguing with the umpire is dissent. Overturned, game over. End of argument.

Swans players also argued with the umpire over it not being a free to Prestia. Dissent. 50m. End of argument.

Nah my idea will improve the league, keep the umpires in line
They only apply the rules when it suits and ignore the dissent rule.
Against Martin or Riewoldt for dissent?
Can they pay two 50 metre penalties against them??
Was more than them, so Warner by letter of the law could have had a shot for the swans.

So just deliberately stand 15m over the mark for a kick after the siren? Or tackle the kicker as he runs in? Throw a mouth guard or shoe at the kicker?

Still no 50m because it is after the siren?
Different part of the rules.

50s are awarded for time wasting or impeding play.

You can be pinged 50m for time wasting if you dont give the ball back on the full, that is what people are arguing here, he booted it away after a free....but the siren had gone, there was no time wasting.

You can be pinged 50m for impeding inside the protected zone or encroaching over the mark.

Different parts of the rule.

No time wasting after siren, but you can still impede on the play.

Correct call on this occassion.
