30+ years old and a 3rd ACL is simply not a good combination to take even the slightest chance in this situation.

Going extra conservative and preparing Sam for next year would be the wisest cause of action. Think how much extra strength and conditioning work he can get through. Carlton aren't contending for a premiership this season but they could in 2025.

Look, it'll probably be fine if he plays but the risk to reward profile just isn't there for most clubs. Carlton are mad enough that I do think they'll seriously consider playing him though, that's the scary thing.
Easy to say from the outside, but with all due respect, you have not been following his recovery closely, nor do you have any insider knowledge to make that claim.

The thing with ACLs is that he could do it anytime. During training, during the off-season, round 1 next year. Say we play him as sub, does the benefit of his presence and leadership outweigh that risk?

Wednesdays injury list update will be interesting.
I am happy for Docherty to play.
Carlton could have between 5-8 players available. Play them all i say.

Brisbane winning will all depend on if they are switched on for the majority of the game.
If they are, they will have a comfortable win at home.
If not, which is highly possible as Lions fans can attest to, they will get beaten in a final

Excuse Me What GIF

Or instead of picking him as sub you could just not pick him and have him sit on the bench for his leadership and presence.

Disagree - they never kick straight.

Patchy!
Well, occasionally...

But not usually, no.

Yeah if Daniher and Hipwood especially don't improve in that department dunno if they ever will. I can't think of any Lions player let alone forward who is a reliable dead eye in front of goal, who, even when say 40 directly in front, you think they'll probably kick it.
Linc McCarthy, but he's busted his ACL. Kai Lohmann has replaced most of what Linc did pretty well, but not in terms of accuracy.

Took the young fella down to watch training Saturday morning. TDK is no chance imo, didn't set foot on the ground just saw him doing a few exercises in the indoor facility. McGovern, McKay, Williams and Curnow were all out there so would expect those 4 as definite ins and, yes, agree with whoever said we're probably crazy enough to play Docherty lol :drunk:

Brisvegas by plenty :(

Why are people writing off the blues? Brisbane collapsed against the pies when top 4 was on the line.
I don't think Carlton should be written off, but a week's rest does a lot to settle the nerves and work on issues.

They have wasted another year and they know it. Could easily get rolled here
Kinda going the early crow, aren't you? Brisbane could easily win the next two weeks and make the prelims, which I'd count as not a wasted year.

Mcinerney pantsed Pittonet and TDK in the prelim last year. TDK this year held himself well against Mcinerney in opening round. It’ll be Pittonet doing the ruck work and Oscar could well destroy him.

This is make or break - 100% pressure loaded.

All the expectation clearly sits with The Brions.

How they handle that pressure early will go a long way to determining who wins this game.

Recent finals exits, poor kicking for goal, high expectations all swirling around the minds of Brissy players.

Throw in a very capable but inconsistent Blues loading up with a likely 5 big inclusions.

The Blues came back from 46 down to win in our only game this season, that will sit with both teams.

Carlton match up well with Brissy - both highly contested, clearance teams with potent forward lines.

It’ll be won in the middle & as always - who can finish off their work.

Because we have a lot of pea hearts who lack skills and composure when the heat goes on.

Poor Crippas shoulders aren't wide enough to carry them all.
