MEDIA STATEMENT FROM THE AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE

FORMER St Kilda CEO and director Jim Watts has been appointed as a consultant to the AFL with the initial responsibility of working part time with the Carlton Football Club to help Carlton.

Mr Watts, 51, who played a significant role in the turnaround of the St Kilda Football Club as both an off-field and on-field force, will work closely with Carlton President Graham Smorgon and Chief Executive Officer Michael Malouf.

AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou said Mr Watts was an experienced and successful football executive who was respected by the industry for his strategic thinking and hard work.

Between October 2000 until July 2006, Jim held the roles of Director, Vice President or CEO of the St Kilda Football Club. In that time he drove considerable cultural change through the organisation and the club enjoyed a remarkable financial turnaround to become one of the most respected models in AFL Football.

“We are really excited that Jim has taken on this role because we want Carlton to return to a healthy off-field and on-field position as soon as possible,” Mr Demetriou said.

“Michael and his team are working extremely hard to turn around Carlton and we think the addition of Jim and his extensive football and business expertise, will quicken that process.”

Mr Demetriou said the appointment of Jim Watts followed the AFL Commission’s recent announcement of an assistance package, which comprised a $1.5 million interest-free loan and provision of a $500,000 grant from the Annual Special Distribution funding toward the maintenance of MC Labour Park.

As part of the overall package, AFL Commissioner Mike Fitzpatrick is also sitting as an observer in Carlton board meetings.

Carlton CEO Michael Malouf said he was looking forward to welcoming Jim Watts in his role with Carlton.

“The club has taken many decisions in recent years to set up the building blocks for its turnaround, however there is still much work to be done. To have someone of Jim’s calibre, who has been through similar circumstances, assisting the club in these challenging times will be of great benefit and will accelerate the turnaround,” Mr Malouf said.

The club welcomes this assistance as part of the AFL’s overall support and is also currently in discussions with the AFL on shared service opportunity.”

“Jim has extensive business experience and importantly he has a thorough knowledge of our industry and his experience in the AFL will provide Carlton with a very valuable resource to assist in our objective to return the Carlton Football Club to a healthy and strong position both on and off the field.”

Before working at St Kilda, Mr Watts, who has an Honours Degree in Economics and post-graduate degrees in Mathematics and Physical Education, founded a human resource consulting firm, Hamilton Watts International in London in 1984. He drove the expansion of the company into a multi-national organisation with offices in Europe, Indonesia, Singapore, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, USA and Australia before selling the company to global listed company, Cendant Corporation in 2000.

He also worked in the United States managing a series of Health Clubs and also worked as European Sales Manager for a UK-based telecommunications company undergoing a phase of massive growth and cultural change.

A great move by the Blues and the AFL.

It's going to take a big effort from everyone involved to save Carlton - well done to Jim for sticking his hand up to help.

Wow, the AFL really don't like Carlton, do they

:D

That was my first thought after reading that.

Our former CEO's seem to be doing OK. Brian Waldron left St Kilda to take on the same position at the Melbourne Storm and they haven't gone too badly under his leadership.

Its unusual for you guys not to have the number 1 pick I must agree.

Yup we wanted it so badly in 03 we took yours :thumbsu: :)

Thanks for Goddard BTW.

Great move by the AFL to get a good Saints man into the rabble that is Carlton.

Great to see the forward 21st century thinking.

He will have his work cut out though, Carlton is not a financial powerhouse like the new St.Kilda so it wont be easy for him. However I am sure he will do well with everything he learn down at Linton St :)

21 minutes and no JD. Record.

Happy with this appointment, if the guy can sort out the **** up that was the St Kilda football club. Carlton should be easy.

St Kilda's problems were relatively small, actually. Carlton's perilous state since 2002 is probably worst any club has ever faced - and that includes Fitzroy.

You've been lucky that some wealthy benefactors and the other 15 clubs have chipped in to prop you up, plus the hard work of some good post-Jack admin.

It would not be good for Carlton to be relegated to the VFL or faced with a fold/merger, and any move - such as this - which prevent such a happening has to be good.

Probably had some business to take care of in the bathroom when he heard.

While the irony is pretty amusing it isn’t the AFL’s place to do this IMO.
Yep, I agree.

No sign of JD, but he has sent one of his henchmen in on his behalf. Thanks for not letting the team down JB.

Is Fergus going to demand a trade to the Blues now? Because we could really use that Bryce Gibbs pick.
The best you'll get is Ian Prendergast.:D

LOL at the AFL having to deal with the repercussions of what it created with its short-sighted penalties.

Carlton was penalised and crippled in such a theatrical and severe fashion that the brand itself was left ruined.

Yes we committed the crime, but the cop who caught us beat us so badly that we're now stuck on life support.

Nobody wins.

LOL @ Carlton having to deal with the repercussions of what it created with its short-sighted policies.

Thanks for the interest guys but do I really need to rate more comment than Jim in his own thread?

Watts is a fantastic football administrator and is there to protect the AFL's interests. I would have thought this the ample evidence to all that Carlton are unable to manage a chook raffle let alone a football club.

How embarrassing.

No embarrassing is having a thought as a St Kilda supporter that you are a chance to win the flag. The clock is ticking and the window closing fast but thats okay isnt it JD as long as you have the marketing and off field stuff in order. Hey!! Carlton are crap at both at the moment but at least histroically we have taken advantage of any on field superiority to actually win Grand Finals and play regular finals football.

Watts has another son, maybe Carlton will be stupid enough to take him.
There's only one club I can think of stupid enough to draft players just on name . . . and it aint Carlton.
