Get Humphrey instead

What this all really boils down to is ‘is Tsatas a better outside player than Humphrey is an inside player?’

It’s close, but I’d probably say yes

ant555 id be interested in what your view is of Humphreys defending ability? Not sure if youve seen him live or not, think theres a bit to be desired there aswell

The problem with alot of these u15-u18 kids that you may be talking about is that disposals, goals ect are talked about and rewarded. Whereas the defensive work is very rarely rewarded at that level. It might be changing a bit as its become a larger talking point in the AFL since the tigers era kicked off but in my time (5-12 years ago) there wasnt much care for defensive work and all the best kids in the state did nothing defensively but then had tonnes of energy when a turnover occured

Id be taking Humphrey over Tsatas. Ive only watched the one game on tv of Tsatas and thought his impact was limited yet still won plenty of football. Also think Humphreys character would be big for the club and he plays early games as a fwd

As for targetting currently Sydneys 14 and GWS 15 picks. Im a little hesitant but it also might be the best we can do. Its right on the brink of whether one of the gun 14 are still available then after that it might be how much we rate a Keeler, how much of a need Konstanty fills or how much we rate Ed Allen, or maybe its just better we keep an early 2nd and get a mid 2nd for next year instead

That Melbourne pick 13 is key, which is why i wanted to try and get involved in the L.Jackson/Fremantle trade some way

Id almost consider F2, 22 and F3 for pick 13 and F3

No it doesn't.

It boils down to whether our list is in greater need of competitiveness and leadership, or attacking ball hunters.

If you've watched more than a couple of our games over the last few years the answer should be very obvious.

Also, as I've mentioned before - unless we have strong leaders driving high standards any would-be stars like Tsatas are not going to reach their potential on our list. Ideally we get the foundations right before decorating, and the foundation of every successful club is a core of strong leaders.

It’s a very bold list manager that doesn’t go for the best available player in the top 5.

Very bold indeed

Tsatas would need to become much more than a wingman (outside player) at AFL level to warrant a pick anywhere near 4/5

Clubs will see him as an inside mid for the future and no doubt he starts as a wingman/flanker at most clubs

For me the wing role has become very role type. You dont spend up large draft capital on a wing type, you can cover that role far later down the line

Not really, list managers need to weigh up list needs as much as the quality of the players available. Humphrey would be drafted in the picks shortly after our pick if we passed on him, so it's not like we'd be reaching for a player ranked in the teens.

Melbournes pick 13 guarantees us one of

Cadman
Wardlaw
Sheezel
Tsatas
Humphrey
J.Clark
Ginbey
C.Mckenzie
Phillipou
Busslinger
Jefferson
E.Hewett
O.Hollands

Seems a general consensus just about with everyone that these are the clear top 13

As long as its not Busslinger left there then i reckon im happy to give up F2, 22 and F3 for one of them and a later F3

Would need to be 50/50 or very very close to it for anyone not to take best available at that range

Every recruiting manager takes best available there

List needs are sorted down the line

The last line is simply , well rubbish. Sorry.
Every club has a list plan projecting 3 to 4 years ahead. They may * them up but to say they haven't is simply wrong.
Our list plan beyond this draft would include competitors and leaders and then some more competitors and leaders.
I dunno
2020 draft - 4x kpd
2015-2018 - draft parish and mcgrath, recruit smith and shiel. Had merrett already.
We've taken two ruckman in the top 30 picks in 2 decades
3x KPFs in top 30 this century

I havent really seen a cohesive drafting strategy from us in a long time.

Honestly I'd just hold on to 22, or get 17 off Sydney and get Szybkowski. Adding Setterfield, Humphrey and Szybkowski in the one offseason would instantly resolve our midfield size and depth issues.

Utter nonsense. There's talk of North taking Tsatas ahead of Wardlaw, if that's not picking needs over quality I don't know what is.

Tsatas and szybkowski + setterfield is a nice set of additions.
Davey is also quite good defensively as a forward. Ideally he's coached to build on that.
Jayden and munkara would be handy bonuses. Munkara's highlight reel is special.

That’s what drafting the best available looks like…

Literally every recruiting manager that has been asked has said they take best available in that range

Maybe they cant split the 2?

I will also say theres plenty of talk to the contrary aswell

Id argue curnow was both the better choice and more needed.
Oddly enough, it was francis who was my first choice who hasn't panned out.
Curnow and parish would have worked out well
Curnow slid to pick 12 because of his drink driving offence a few days before the draft, which was reason enough for a few teams not to pick him.

A year ago that looked like a blessing in disguise given his recurrent serious injuries with his knee.

I remember this because I wanted Curnow and Weideman at the time… and then his stocks tanked.

Curnow stuff was a bit overblown for mine.
Silly adolescent thing to do. As was Hurley's run in with the cab driver.

My guess is parish and francis were always how we were going unless the top 3 were different.
Guess my question there is was it the best use of picks. We'd been juggling kpfs to pair with daniher (hurley/carlisle...who knew hooker was the answer).
A kpf in curnow (or weideman) would have been handy

George would be amazing. Immediately onto the long term injury list and give us a chance to take another player in the SSP.

Like I said they may **** it up but they all have long term plans. It is the plan that ends up being wrong and not the fact they plan draft to draft.
