Saturday March 2
Simonds Stadium 2:40 PM (Local Time)

The team I want see for NAB Cup round 2.

Rivers Lonergan Enright

Guthrie Taylor Mackie

Varcoe Selwood Duncan

Bartel Pods Stokes

Chapman Hawk Motlop

Foll. West JC Hyphen

Int. Caddy, Bundy, Vardy, Thunt plus a few of Walker, Murdoch, Blicavs, Thurlow, Brown, Smedts and Kersten.

Pretty much how we might line up Round 1 v the Hawks.

It will only get stronger from there - Kelly and SJ available round 2 and Hmac maybe round 4-6. Also JHunt probably right to go by then as well.

First 4 weeks maybe quite hard for us - we will see soon enough.

Got to love the centre line !

Prefer Corey, Stringer or Sherringham to Varcoe on the wing. But that's just me.
I forgot, Taylor Hunt!

I think we're well aware of your opinion of Varcoe.

But really none of those players on a wing come close to Varcoe. Corey would get destroyed on the spread as a winger. He's on the inside of packs whether that be in the AFL or VFL. Stringer's a talent but his performances aren't up to Varcoe's standard since 2010 or so. Sherringham's a solid depth player who will go all day but he hasn't got clean hands and there's questions over his disposal.

None of them up to him? What about Taylor Hunt, not good enough?
Both Sherry and Stringer, both pretty cool in the hurley burley!!!

You reckon, well what's your prob with the others? Or is Varcoe that superior?
Taylor Hunt has been earmarked as a tagger since Ling pulled the pin. He may spend time on a wing but it won't be his domain.

Sheringham lacks polish, put simply. An adequate depth player but will be lucky to crack the 22 this year, let alone lock down a spot on the wing. Stringer is as tough as nails but his speed and foot skills aren't suited to a wing I wouldn't have thought.

Basically it depends on what you expect from a wingman. For me, it's good pace and excellent disposal by foot. None of Corey, Sheringham or Stringer have these qualities. Trav Varcoe has these in spades. Lucky for you though, he's likely to spend a fair amount of time running through half back should he stay fit so you might not have to worry about whipping boy playing on the wing!

Our lack of pace (especially on the spread) last year killed us and Trav's absence played a part in that. The way he patrols space on the wings/flanks is an often overlooked and thankless task but nevertheless its an important asset to our team

Apologies for abbreviating. Very good post.

I think a forward flank could be more suitable for Varcoe, at least early in the season. He's missed a ton of footy now, and like Menzel don't expect him to immediately return to his best. Playing him up forward gets him back to playing regularly, he's always been pretty good with defensive pressure (something we didn't have last year), and whatever his other faults his conversion for goal has always been very good.

Not that I dislike him playing midfield once he's really firing, but for me maybe the first few games and NAB Cup just let him get minutes under his belt and touches of the footy.

That's the problem I have with the "we just have to accept him the way he is" mindset. Because it needs to be changed now. As I said, they didn't just accept it with Johnson in 2007, they banished him. That seemed to work ok.
Yeah agreed he definitely needs to become more disciplined, but what I meant in my question, and should have made it more clear was what would happen to either of these guys if they were to pick up another suspension in the coming NAB cup games? Would they just accumulate?

Funny your comments bout Stringer, the best runner at our club Blicavs said he is the only one that can put any pressure on him at all, but then again what would he know, hey??

You've got him and Sherry covered, just not up to Varcs, yeah as if!!! And Varcs excellent disposal, gee! seen him turn it over under pressure a few times.

I hope he gets a game against Hawthorn, then you'll see his glaring weaknesses.

Yeah think so. Be just another week or so's suspension added on. Don't want to contemplate it. Rest assured every opposition club will be told to niggle Johnson no matter what now. As they should.

We just have to have our absolute best available to beat Hawthorn this year, and it won't happen now.
If they get reported again in NAB Cup, our club should double what the AFL give them.

I'm far from Varcoe's biggest fan, but I'd say Varcoe's biggest flaw is avoiding contests when the pressure's on. His disposal is usually pretty good both in general play and especially near goal.

Like I just added to my previous post, I hope he gets a game against the Hawks at the expense of one of the others, but please take note at how often he pulls out of a contest if caught in the area, it's a joke.

I feel for the other boys who are prepared to put the body in harms way.
Thanks for the wee bit of support, I don't like to say it, but it's true, that's why he'll never be a Cyril.

The team I want see for NAB Cup round 2.

Rivers Lonergan Enright
Guthrie Taylor Mackie
Varcoe Selwood Duncan
Bartel Pods Stokes
Chapman Hawk Motlop
Foll. West JC Hyphen
Int. Caddy, Bundy, Vardy, Thunt plus a few of Walker, Murdoch, Blicavs, Thurlow, Brown, Smedts and Kersten.

Pretty much how we might line up Round 1 v the Hawks.

As much as I'd love to see the Round 1 side against Adelaide I doubt it'll happen. They will and should give more experience to the younger guys. So something like this would seem about right:

B: Guthrie - Lonergan - Mackie
HB: Rivers - Taylor - Bartel
C: Murdoch - Selwood - Duncan
HF: Varcoe - Vardy - Brown
F: Chapman - Hawkins - Smedts
R: West - Horlin-Smith - T.Hunt
I/C: Caddy - Corey - Motlop
Sub: Christensen

- Enright and Pods gets the week off, then play the next 2. That's 3 out of 4 games before Round 1. Swap out another couple of veterans for the following game.
- Trial Bartel off a half back flank, his best game by far in 2012 was against Sydney in that role. His reading of the play and disposal is still great, could do a lot worse.
- Vardy to pull double duty as key forward and backup to West. Brown to play at CHF when Vardy's rucking. One reason and one reason only - Vardy needs as many minutes as possible out there.
- Playing Varcoe up forward and Murdoch on a wing means we don't lose any pace there. Like all our kids Murdoch needs game time.
- I've spoken about giving Brown a shot as a leading forward, here's his chance. If he's useless play Kersten or Walker there the following week.
- Christensen as sub. He's a certainty for Round 1, give him full games the last two weeks of pre-season.
