Wow, there's something different.

Only 6 "big" blokes in: Brown, Bradshaw, Clark, Merrett, Patfull and Leuenberger. On the bench are noted endurance runners in Stiller and Selwood. Should get plenty of run, although I wonder if we have enough ball winning ability out there (Harding :eek: and Rich named in the followers - do they have the tank to consistently get to contests and win clearances for us?).

Will be a big ask for Leuey - but he's done it before. :thumbsu:

For West Coast, they've certainly got more tall timber. Lynch, Hansen, Brown and Staker named in the forward line alone (although Staker will probably play more as a running option/utility). We might be stretched for height down there, especially if Le Cras gets away from us - Patfull's gone to him in the past and done well, but we really can't afford to just have Merrett playing on the talls.

Looks to be an interesting match. Can't wait.

Charman will play... surely.

Like someone said earlier, he's easily starting 22 when fit. So if he's fit, he plays. If he's not, you wouldn't name him as an EMG.

Either that or Voss is operating on a whole new strategic level that I can't comprehend.

No Suncoast game right? So if Charman doesn't play, will he be given permission to play for a different side again?

Edit: NVM, saw CTD's post about the ressies game this weekend as curtain raiser.
Also it's no longer Suncoast!

Maybe Power to move around a bit - Clark and Collier to be used in defence as required - just Stiller in lieu of Brennan is a worry..can't be helped - Henderson and Proud to demand selection soon with outstanding form.......last year's look about it allright.....now for the straight kicking and real purpose that is required in 2009.

This team is pretty close to what i had picked (although i didnt post it) The only changes i had were hooper for proud and selwood for hendo.

Proud was the only shock selection as i thought he was great in the pre-season games i watched.

henderson must be one frustrated young man another who did well enough to grap a spot in the first round we might struggle to hang onto him next year a good chb in the making

Calm down a bit mate. Henderson is two things: a great talent and a good bloke. Odds of him walking out on the club would be minimal in my opinion, but to say not playing Round 1 would be "frustrating" for a 2nd year bottom aged tall is just over the top. He may be disappointed but he will certainly get his chance. Much like Proud - he would've been there abouts but in no way do I see him as a certain starter who has been 'robbed'. If at any stage we are selecting teams based on fear that they will leave the club we are in deep trouble!

My one other thought on selection is that I would almost put money on Leuenberger having a good game if it was possible. Up against the best in the business, sole ruck with that weight on his shoulders, etc seems to bring the best out of him. Add on a great preseason and that his body now seems up to the rigours of AFL rucking and I am excited.

sorry to disagree with you champ but henderson earned his spot with his pre season form this seems like a matthews squad as opposed to a voss one and proud should be in for selwood or stiller joel macdonald is not a centre half back and by the way i am calm so cheers

Use of grammar would make it easier for me to understand you, but I think it is a little funny how people regard Voss as going to "fix" all the percieved Matthews mistakes from last year. If you dislike Selwood, Voss won't play him. If you think Proud deserves more games, Voss will be the saviour.

If anything this just shows that people who labelled Matthews as having vendettas against certain players while inversely having too much love others were most likely off the mark.

no way i would pick macdonald over henderson, stupid move lions

I wouldn't necessarily trust any team sheets when they list positions;) MacDonald is DEFINITELY best 22, most probably best 10 on last years form, so if Henderson was going to be picked it certainly wasn't and "either or" scenario.

Oh no, Joel Macdonald has been named at CHB. Now when the game starts, he won't be able to run away from that little imaginary zone around our defensive 50, and has to play on whoever West Coast plays at CHF.

You can name players wherever you like, and we haven't shown the inclination to name our players exactly where we're going to play them. Last year we had Patfull, Drummond, Roe, Macdonald and Brennan all named at CHB at some point.

Look, I agree that our defence down back may be stretched for height, but who do you leave out? Certainly not Merrett, Patfull or Drummond, and Macdonald has been our most consistent defender along with Patfull over the past year. McGrath is our only small defender, and one that provides great dash when the mood suits him. Power is named there, but expect him to play in the midfield.

I suspect it was a toss up between Collier and Henderson for that 3rd defensive tall option, and Collier got the nod because of his versatility, great run and carry, and IMO even better form than Henderson showed in the pre-season.

It's easy to say so and so deserved selection. That's fine - but who is he going to replace, and is he a better than the option he'd replace?

Edit: cross posted with notting18. Exactly my thoughts.

i think what vossy has to do is work on the problems we had last year such as a centre half back to help joel patfull and more importantly to free our quarterback josh drummond so he can create and attack.
we need hard ball gets and pace in the guts put power at brownshaw's feet these are the problems that should be addressed hence my desire for us to play henderson and proud, the reason i make these comments is these were big deficiencies that hurt us last year

How was CHB a problem last year? I can't remember Patfull being beaten playing CHB many times, if at all. MacDonald did well playing the 3rd tall defender role as well and with Collier (who i agree with BC2 had a better preseason that Hendo) in the side as well Drummond would be pretty free.

I don't neccessarily understand what you mean here. Power's days as a crumbing forward are behind him in my opinion, he has lost his goal sense he had as a young player and his best jobs forward recently have been more as a small leading forward. The need to win more of the ball then last year is obvious to all but to say playing Proud over whoever would change that is a little simplistic in my book.

Yeah, if we have any second year players chucking a wobbly because they do not automatically walk into the team I would be looking to trade them.

As an ex-fitzroy man I may be wrong but wasn't this issue around back in the Capper days? He played because of the name and to keep him happy and not his form, etc

Well don't u think Proud deserved to be put ahead of Harding who has been tried on the ball previously ? Harding is not would u classify as in and under and Albert brings more to the table than Scotty i believe.
Is that a fair point?

Harding's pre-season form was great. He was shown to be a dangerous goal kicker and lively small, which is something we definitely lack. Again, the fact he has been named on the ball doesn't necessarily reflect he will play there. It is more likely to see Harding around the forward 50.

In short, I do disagree. I see no stand out reasons as to why Proud should be in the side over Harding.

Some great discussion here!

I am surprised by a few selections but there seems to be an overall theme to selections. I think Voss has picked a running team with some very creative players at best eg. Harding, Sherman and Hooper but has then balanced these selections with accountable endurance types in Selwood and Stiller. While i don't agree with the ommission of Proud, i cannot see how we could have Proud, Harding and Hooper in the same side. I would put Proud ahead of the other 2 though.

I don't have an issue with Henderson not being selected at this stage. I think Mitch Clark has to play and we need to give him every opportunity to find a spot in the team. I prefer to see him play at CHB because his goal kicking is terrible.

Proof will be in the pudding, we need a team performance from a united squad. Hopefully the boys will do the job and we will celebrate a win this week.

hate to say it, but i think at subiaco, we will get flogged. 40 points i reckon, this year for us unfortunately i think will be getting used to voss and bringing in new players. :(
