I think it is a great move not to select Drummond, we can afford him out for another week but we can't afford him to be out for 6 weeks. Short term pain and long term gain. I guess it also points to a new confidence in the depth of our list. I think Notting was unlucky to be left out but Voss has definitely got his eyes on the future. Would love to see Redden get a game.

I feel bad for Notting, especially after his brilliant last quarter, but I guess Vossy really is looking towards the future.

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this, but our tallest defender just a few weeks ago was Jmac. Now, all of a sudden, we have Merrett, Patfull, Henderson, Roe and Jmac, all in the same team!

However, we probably will need all five of them this week, with Melbourne fielding an exceptionally tall forward line. They have named Miller at CHF, Robertson and Bate on the HFF, Sylvia at FF, Petterd in the back pocket (although I'm pretty sure he plays forward) and Watts on the bench. All six of these are key forwards.

Jurrah is tall as well at 191cm, but he plays more of a goalsneak role, so McGrath would be a good match-up for him. They also have Stefan Martin on the bench, who plays forward occasionally as a key forward, so he may be swapping with Petterd between the forward line and backline.

That is one tall team. The average height of their 22 is 188.18cm. The average height of our team last week, which had a pretty normal balance, was 185.32cm.

Just some interesting figures for you.

This is the side from last year:

B: Josh Drummond (39), Daniel Merrett (21), Joel Patfull (24)
HB: Joel Macdonald (26), Mitch Clark (1), Justin Sherman (11)
C: Anthony Corrie (18), Simon Black (20), Tim Notting (8)
HF: Michael Rischitelli (35), Jonathan Brown (16), Ashley McGrath (9)
F: Robert Copeland (30), Daniel Bradshaw (36), Jared Brennan (17)
Foll: Jamie Charman (19), Luke Power (6), Jed Adcock (7)

Int (from): Tom Collier (22), Rhan Hooper (33), James Polkinghorne (31),), Troy Selwood (28)

and this is the side this year:

B: Jason Roe, Daniel Merrett, Jed Adcock
HB: Joel Patfull, Lachlan Henderson, Joel Macdonald
C: Albert Proud, Simon Black, Daniel Rich
HF: Michael Rischitelli, Jonathan Brown, James Polkinghorne
F: Rhan Hooper, Daniel Bradshaw, Luke Power
Foll: Mitch Clark, Cheynee Stiller, Justin Sherman

I/C: Ashley McGrath, Scott Harding, Jared Brennan, Sam Sheldon

Emg: Jack Redden, Matt Austin, Tim Notting

The reason this game will be nothing like last years is because of a few key players.
Sherman: Last year I wanted him delisted, this year he has completely turned around and has been named in our best consistently.
Mitch Clark: Ten times the player he was last year and has a lot more influence in the 12 games he has played this year than Charman had over the whole season last year.
Rich: Do I need to say anything?
Stiller: A lot more aggressive this year, has been doing more than just following another player around the ground.
Mcgrath: Is playing his best footy atm running out of defence.

There are many other players such as Proud and Polkinghorne that have added something to the side and then there are still 2 players i hope to see debut this year Redden and Banfield which look very promising and will make the competition to be in the 22 very difficult come the end of the season

*Redden has been named a couple of weeks in a row as an emergency, should hopefully see him get a game in the next few weeks.

All good points, and I for one agree that this year we seem to be having a much more even contribution across the playing group- meaning we are less vulnerable if one or two KPP's, or Black or Power etc, are having a bad day at the office.

However, let's not get ahead of ourselves- we are more or less in the same win-loss situation as last year. One loss against a team we have budgeted a win against, and the pressure will be on.

We need to nail 'em and nail 'em good- percentage as well as a winning mind set are both critical from here on in.

Interestingly (or not)..

In the NAB Cup/Challenge this year, we:

Beat the Saints
Lost to the Bombers
Lost to the Tigers
Lost to Demons

In the real season we:

Lost to the Saints
Beat the Bombers
Beat the Tigers
-------- Demons

Having reversed three of those results already, I think we'll win :D

Forecast is now "Thundery rain clearing early. Light to moderate NW to SW winds."

Ground may be a little greasy but overall conditions should be ok.

Hopefully the reserves game doesn't get moved down the road to Giffin Park again though.

Please no rain!
As a NSW resident, down on hols visiting relos....I've got my tickets to the Gabba!
Really do'n't want to get rained on however!

Go the Lions!

The good thing is, the likes of Roe, Patfull and Hendo all play as tall or tallish defenders, but can also play on the medium sized forwards as they have ok speed as well. All 3 also offer good skills coming out of the back 50 as well, so we dont lose a heck of a lot of run or rebound by having them in the team.

If hendo can solidify his spot for the rest of the year the backline is going to start looking very intimidating.

Not a real big fan of authority however I have to agree with you on this grasshopper...

Our young bucks are having breakout years and showing promise for our future....to have a fella the size of henderson stand up like he has over the last few weeks is VERY exciting.

And a big thank you to vossey for backing them in

I wonder if Voss tried to hold Hendo back a bit, with a view to getting him to play some substantial game time in the second half of the year. We just look so structurally sound with him at CHB and Patfull free to play on any number of opponents, rather than only being an option on the second tall.

Yeah I thought the same thing, he still is only very young. His non-selection early on was very puzzling.

Whatever the reason he should be pretty fresh for the rest of the year.

Will be interesting if similar things happen with some of the other fringe players.

Just a thought.

Who has the advantage with the Round 12 split round?

I for one have always believed that playing in the second week of the split round sets you up for round 13 better.

Why can't the AFL schedule the teams that played in week one against each other and the teams that played week two against each other.

Looking at the game tonight, Carlton started OK, but then Essendon ran over the top of them in a big way. Could it possibly have helped Essendon to have played last week, maybe having them conditioned better?

Just a random thought as I watch womens tennis:eek:

Thanks for the heads up :thumbsu:

No problems;)

For the record, I have not been watching any of the Williams sisters matches:eek:

A dream job must be working at a tennis club in Russia:thumbsu:

The Ashes start when?:D
