Re: Cats Team VS Swans

West, Hawkins, Ottens, sharing the ruck sounds good. Big ground so we need some room to move. I like the Hawkins/Byrnes combo, they seem to work together really well. I'm also impressed with how West has been playing up forward and taking some good marks around the ground, works the packs really well.

Re: Cats Team VS Swans

Ottems is building up fitess and will spend more and more time in the ruck,as he is our best ruckman. Blake will have got less and less game time. We are better off sharing the rest of the ruck time with more mobile and goal kickers who can tackle. This is what will be taken into the fials. Pods back in and west out.

Re: Cats Team VS Swans

stopcelebrating, sucks that blake covers for ottens all year, then dumped. Hawkins in is good. Hope it's same result as last year, get blake up for finals

I am not "celebrating"...where did you see me make any disparaging comments about Blake?

I'm just reporting the selection news for the benefit of our board users.

Re: Cats Team VS Swans

so what do you really believe when it's crunch time-blake for finals or not. declare

Personally I wouldn't have dropped him if I was coach, but I can understand why they did.

I would say they are trialling ottens-hawkins so I don't know whether Blake will be in, but obviously being out at this time of the year doesn't bode well for his chances.

Anyway my point was simply that don't assume I'm having a crack at a player unless I say that I am-and I don't tend to have a crack at and disparage our players.

sorry mate, you just seemed pretty emphatic about him being dumped and not rested, i know, just stating the facts . agree, timing poor for him. thought last week he showed more grunt and not a bad game at all. was poor against crows. who wasn't? i'm one who likes blake, there are a few.there are many who are celebrating blake out and i respect your comments normally and more so now

Re: Cats Team VS Swans

Disagree. Hawkins was very good in the ruck....got involved in the game and he seems comfortable there. Similar to Mooney 04'...lets give him a run there and see how he keeps going.

Blake is a tough one....he has continued to ruck well and is definitely gradually improving. You won't get Brad Ottens type efforts, but you will get a distinct competitive advantage in the actual ruck contests - which in finals football, where stoppages and pressure is paramount, is a very valuable thing.

Either way, it is just a very pleasant headache to have!

As for Boris? Would prefer to rest him after the Collingwood and Bulldogs games....we still have a job to do!

I don't dispute that. My issue is with his foot and the risk of increased damage due to rucking duties.

I'm not a Blake hater, but if Ottens is fit, the choice becomes Hawkins v Blake.
Absolutely no contest whatsoever. Hawkins by a mile.
Ottens does the bulk of the ruckwork, which makes Blake virtually redundant.
Hawkins just has to hold his own in the ruck as a back-up, but is a huge advantage around the ground and as a tall forward.
Tough for Blake I know, but Ottens will be a good chance to retire this year, especially if we jag another flag, and Hawkins will be a key forward as his career develops. That means Blake can, if good enough, be the real 1st ruck next year and beyond.

I think you'll find Catman is refering to the possibility of him re-injuring his foot if he plays ruck again.

Re: Cats Team VS Swans

Please keep Hawkins away from the ruck, permanently. He's too valuable to be risked.

Problem is Hawkins' value anywhere other than ruck is not high enough for him to get a game especially not now with the emergence of JPod. Can see why he is not going in as 2nd ruck this week as he is only working back in to fitness but down the track he is 2nd ruck or not in the side. I would certainly like him to be 2nd ruck. Blake stays out.

I reckon we will see glimpses of Hawk in the ruck.

In regards to now, yes it is probably the better combination. The issue you have however with an Ottens/Hawkins combination is their combined injury history and the chance that you could lose one to injury during a final, in which case we'd be screwed, whereas Blake for all his faults, is durable from the injury standpoint.

I think we all understand the Hawkins rucking is a short term thing and long term Blake is the ruckman...the issue is if Blake walks out on us in the meantime, I hope he has the right attitude and doesn't, and I hope he comes back a better player.

Yep totally agree. For Hawkins to play, this is how it has to be. So we roll the dice and hope he doesn't get injured. That's not necessarily something I'm comfortable doing, but it's clearly the way the MC is going.

I reckon we will see glimpses of Hawk in the ruck.

Yeah I'd say so given West can play forward also.

Injuries could happen to anyone, blake is durable but you cant play him just because there is a risk of hawkins or ottens going down.

Blake is a one dimensional player, he is a good tap ruckman but struggles against the best.

Hawkins should be ruck/forward until he is good enough to be permanent forward and one of pods or mooney has retired.

Problem is he is most valuable when running around more playing in the ruck, seems to bring out his very best. When fixed up forward, he gets a bit stagnant at times.
