While it is by no means a blockbuster game, Collingwood and Brisbane should put forth an entertaining clash on Saturday night at Etihad. For Brisbane, they’re playing for pride. But for Collingwood, they desperately need to grab this win in order to solidify their finals chances.
Both teams suffered heartbreaking losses on the weekend. For Brisbane, young Cam Rayner had a chance to win the game for the Lions, but he decided to go for a snap kick, which proved costly. For Collingwood, a last minute goal to Sydney broke Collingwood fans’ hearts and severely dented the Magpies finals hopes.
Collingwood
The loss to the Swans last week was utterly devastating for the Magpies. Collingwood were down a man in the second half with Darcy Moore once again injuring his hamstring. However, Collingwood managed to have the lead with two minutes left, but a lucky kick off the ground by McCartin managed to ice the win for Sydney, and deliver a big blow to the Magpies finals hopes. Brodie Grundy and Taylor Adams were simply brilliant keeping the Magpies in the game. However, many were critical of Scott Pendlebury and Steele Sidebottom’s performance against Sydney. Many thought that the experienced leaders failed to produce on the big stage when their team needed them the most. They will be hoping to bounce back after the disappointing effort on Saturday. As a result of this loss, the finals hopes for Collingwood hangs in the balance. With the competition so incredibly tight this year, a loss to Brisbane could be disastrous for Collingwood’s season. Thus, Collingwood need to ensure they come away with the victory on Saturday. Collingwood brings in some much needed forward spark, with Jordan De Goey coming into the side. James Aish also makes his return into the side after a long stint on the sidelines with an injury.
The man to watch for Collingwood is Adam Oxley. Oxley has been somewhat of a forgotten man for Collingwood. A few years back, Oxley seemed to be cementing his place in the best 22, but has fallen out of favor in recent seasons. When he is at his best, Oxley has shown to be a very capable marking defender, and is a great kick, but too often goes missing. As this is his contract year, Oxley has a massive chance to make an impact and earn another contract.
Brisbane
While finals aren’t on the Brisbane agenda at this point in the season, many Brisbane fans will be extremely pleased with the effort that their young team is putting forward this late in the season. As the season has gone on, Brisbane have shown much more reliance on the long kicking game, which has resulted in forwards like Eric Hipwood to be able to be much more dominant. If there is one major concern for Brisbane it is their inability to stick the tackles. This match also sets up a fantastic battle of the midfields. Both teams are some of the best when it comes to clearances, as well as clearing the ball from center stoppages. The Lions currently average the least amount of tackles per game in the league. As a result of missed tackles, teams are able to open up Brisbane and hurt them on the rebound.
The man to watch for Brisbane is Stefan Martin. Last time these two sides met, Martin was electric for the Lions, amassing 28 disposals, eight marks, and 24 hitouts. It will be important that the star Lion is able to put up numbers like this if the Lions are to have any chance of beating Collingwood.

The run home…
So, it’s the pointy end of the season, and it’s necessary to see what a loss or win means for Collingwood. The ladder predictor will assume that all the other favorites win.
If Collingwood wins
Collingwood goes to fifth
If Collingwood loses
They go down to eighth.
Tip
Collingwood has everything to play for. De Goey could prove the key to getting Collingwood’s season back on track.
