AFL Round 4 Port Adelaide V Brisbane Lions Official Thread

I would like to see us get 1st use of the ball this week. I see Charmo has laid down the challange to Brogan in todays paper.I would also like to see Hooper play up the ground a bit, io sweeping at Browns feet.

And so it should be talked up, a win on Saturday night is extremely important for both sides. Although, I will add a disclaimer that with it being so early in season as we have seen with Sydney and North over the last couple of years there still is no need for doom and gloom posters to resurface with a loss

I certainly agree campbell, the first use of the ball will be crucial for both teams.

Im no Lions fan but I will be there chearing you boys on Saturday... Almost want you lads to win as much as my beloved Crows.. Interested to see if Port plays its so called tough guy game ( hitting blokes going for the ball when they arent looking) against the likes of Brown and Charman and Merrett.... If Port are o-4, season over!

Was that really necessary?

Anyway, I think this game comes down to Jonathon Brown more than anything else. If he fires against Port's inexperienced backline he could probably kick about 58 goals. We need Chaplin to stand up and our forwards to fire up or we are totally screwed. I'm hoping Port can win with the home ground advantage but I think you guys might get up unless Chaplin has the game of his life.

Yep :D

How short-step Sherman gets a run ahead of the two dropped is beyond me. Playing against a team who physically bullied their opponents last week, and we drop two of our tougher little men.

On another note, will be interested to see how we line-up in the forward line this week, the structure up front has been something we have continuously tinkered with, maybe a new page to be turned this week.

I completely disagree. If you look at last week's performance he showed some good signs, especially when you put it in the perspective of how poorly a lot of our players played.

What Proud does is good but he has not got enough of the ball to cement a spot with his toughness...

Proud being dropped is beyond me, sure he only got 8 possessions but there wasn't one cheap one among them. He ran around players and had 3rd and
4th efforts at the contests. It must be a smokescreen otherwise i should stop watching footy! And he showed that he is in our top 5 tacklers

That toughness and directness at the pill creates turnovers that may not result in him getting stats but gives opportunities for his mates. He also has played 4games and normally you stick with blokes that show as much as he has.

harding not even an emergency.....

From all reports Polkinghorne had a great game last week and is in good form and as you said Proud could quite easily be in the 22. I don't think we could risk having an away game without a "tall" emergency though so Mills would get the gig.

I'm pleased that you have an opinion, but completely disagreeing is a bit rough.

For someone who played so well in 06, I am unsure how he continues to get picked on such lacklustre performances since then. Yes, he has the potential to be a champion, but currently, his output is woeful. Take the dropped mark close to goal last week, he deadset shit himself. He has all the skill in the world, so don't say it was a hard mark, because any player on that field should have taken it, but he simply didn't go hard enough, and that has been an occasional issue with him in contested situations. And Matthews is a tough coach, so I must say I am disappointed that he has let such a foible pass through.

I know he is a very handy player outside packs, but even then, he isn't playing to his strengths. Hopefully now that he has his spot for the week, he gets a run on a forward flank or wing, and is given a chance to find some space and use his ability.

Anywho, hopefully the Port that played a fortnight ago play on the weekend, because I'm not sure if we have the man power to withstand a physical ambush. Although I'd love nothing more than to see us match it with them in the physicality stakes.

The key for us will be to win in the midfield, which will require some players in the midfield rotation to increase their output, and Stiller is a good in, because he knows how to find the pill.

i like selwood and stiller back in, they have proved themselves in the past and should get the chance to do so after sitting out for a few weeks. just unlucky for proud, hasn't been fantastic, but has been solid. Message has been sent to selwood ans stiller i think, proud comes back in if they don't perform.

i would have maybe had proud in for riska, but i guess they wanted a bit more of a tank over the hard ball gets. glad sherman gets another chance, has been improving so :thumbsu:

selwood, stiller, riska, sherman, proud and harding all going for 2 or 3 spots. time to see who puts their hand up.

Didn’t get my “possible changes” right either… sigh…
I guess that’s why I’m on this side of the PC… Mind you it still wont stop me… or others, from being a Monday Expert! :D

At first i thought the Stiller selection would be to strengthen the half back line and play the Drummond role. After a bit more thought i wouldn't mind betting we see Stiller play a bit more forward of the ball and used hopefully as a goal kicking midfielder.

Proud's a little stiff. I thought he'd shown enough to get another crack too but looks like they expect an open running game this week and maybe Leigh and the boys don't think Albie's motor is up to it yet. I don't know how much psychology goes into these decisions but I can only see Proud getting hungrier from this :thumbsu:

With Bradshaw showing so much so soon, and with Port's backline looking really shaky, I reckon we're a real chance if we can get it into our forwards :thumbsu:

Yet calling a player "short step" with "woeful" output who "deadset shit himself" is using the "kiddie gloves."

I think you hit the nail on the head with the fact that he had such a spectacular run. He has some runs on the board and we have seen how high he can go. Although he has been playing below his best for a while, there have been worse performers in the side, particular ones who are yet to show if their best football is better than Sherman's high standard he set and on top of that Sherman looks to me that he is slowly building back up.
