AFL Top 10 players

Possessions mean nothing these days...and swans stats reveal why ..getting cheap possies across haf back with no opponent does not make you a great player ..otherwise Joel Bowden would be a superstar ...Judds possessions are much more damaging than Swans and even Abletts .....must pundits agree.

Which is why Swan is leading the AFL in scoring assists...

Rgardless of stats and just watching a lot of footy i think Swan is in the top 10 players this year. What doesn't get mentioned much is defensive side especially in the air. Against opponents his size i would be confident he could beat 75% of them.

I don't like putting too much of an emphasis on stats when rating players but these are the stats I would rate:

Clearences:

1. Chris Judd - 108
2. Matthew Boyd - 108
3. Sam Mitchell - 101
4. Jude Bolton - 99
5. Brett Kirk - 95
6. Matt Priddis - 95

I50's
1. Chris Judd - 117
2. Jason Gram - 106
3. Danyle Pearce - 97
4. Dane Swan - 97
5. Leigh Montagna - 96
6. Adam Goodes - 95

Contested Possessions:
1. Chris Judd - 209
2. Dane Swan - 200
3. Gary Ablett - 187
4. Joel Selwood - 184
5. Shane Tuck - 178
6. Adam Goodes - 173

Maybe Judd is the best player this year. I didn't think he would be top of all of them.

It does look pretty compelling. By the way I stand corrected and will give up my pro-stat ways for Champion data (mainly because they provide us with a new footy bible each year).

Not arguing with you that he deserves to be in top 10. Certainly, mind you if I had to pick one Collingwood player that I'd want to go to West Coast it'd be out of Davis and Pendlebury.

Davis is far more skilled but as far as an all round player goes i'd have to say Swan is your man. I'd take Pendles over both of them though.

Good to see the point made that total possessions don't mean much these days.

If you had a hypothetical ladder where you win games based on possessions rather than score,
Geelong is top
Hawthorn is 3rd
Richmond is 4th
Brisbane is 13th
Melbourne would still be bottom though!

Yes times have changed. Gone are the days when it's an outrage with Simon Goodwin or Scott West get 30+ disposals and no brownlow votes. Nowadays it is a regular occurrence. Players have to do more than just get stats to keep their positions (i.e. Joel Bowden).

I think the stats show that it seems a bit bizarre to argue Judd is overrated when he leads probably the three most important midfield stats. For mine, the best player this year, but I'm willing to concede the mantle could be taken by any of: Hayes, Riewoldt, Goddard, Selwood, Ablett or Swan. Liked Montagna's year but would rate at least three Saints ahead of him. Also seems I've been underestimating Boyd.

While Judd leads in stats like contested possessions and i50s, and is equal leader in clearances, he doesn't have the highest average in any of them except i50s . . .

He is also down in a number of stats including goals and disposal efficiency.

He is high in clangers.

Disposal efficiency is a hard one to judge in regards to inside midfielders. Yes Judd does rank low for disposal efficiency and clangers (around about 66% and 56 respectively). However, compared to Simon Black, another elite inside midfielder, he is yards ahead in both (Black somehow managed to get a disposal efficiency of 38% in rd. 16 against Fremantle). Players such as Joel Corey, Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson, Luke Hodge and Scott Thompson have more clangers this year than him. These are all absolute elites of the competition.
The best comparison though, is against Montagna, who, as an outside player (and one of the Brownlow favourites) should smash Judd in both these categories. Montagna, however, has a disposal efficiency of 71.84% and only two less clangers than Judd. Despite this he has arguably been the best player this year.
I guess my point is, that while these stats are important the disposal efficiecy is usually dominated by backs who chip to safe targets and can be a bit deceiving (as all stats can be). Take for instance Judd vs Collingwood rd 8. Judd had a 62.5% disposal efficiency and seven clangers. Despite this he was yards ahead as the best player on the ground and the difference between the two teams. Pendlebury by contrast had a disposal efficiency of 80.7% and only one clanger (from 31 disposals) and was not best on ground. Bad example perhaps but just trying to emphasize my point.
By the way, Dane Swan has a 70% disposal efficiency and 53 clangers. Take from that what you will.

Obviously the OP has a ranking system for his top 10, so credit for working that out. I think the list is quite fair.

My personal views. This is more based on a current assessment...not career rankings.

1. Judd
2. Ablett
3. Swan
4. Didak
5. Riewoldt
6. Montagna
7. Jonathon Brown
8. Hayes
9. Boyd
10. Chapman

Steve Johnson and Leon Davis unlucky

I suppose that's only really based on the last 10 rounds or so and current form.

It's amazing that no one has Adam Goodes in their top 10, yet he will win another brownlow this year.

Surely Ablett has to poll again to win the Brownlow?
Goodes, I don't know, he's an enigma. He's close to the best presence player in the comp. In terms of ranking or Brownlow, yeah pushing top 10. Brownlow, could be anything. The umps love him one year are not interested the next. But he generally poles in years he is predicted to. Think he will have to come over a pack of about five other players to claim the award this year though.

=1. Riewolt
=1. Judd
3. Ablett
4. J.Brown
5. Goodes
6. J.Selwood
7. Pavlich
8. Bartel
9 & 10 very close so wont put them up. about 10 players could fill that role

Its a fair and right time to swap a cpl of rovers for KPP's...gotta swing with the times and in terms of individual influence this yr they've earnt it.

1. Riewoldt
2. Brown

Actually probably more like

#1 Riewoldt and Brown

I think Juddy takes the cake for best player in the league
followed closely by Gaz

Yeah that record did speak for itself 3 years ago. Judd is no longer a top 5 player, he is a top 2 hyped player that is the difference.

Riewoldt is the best player in the league no question, no one man has made an impact on the season like he has. I actually wonder why Riewoldt is so disrespected in AFL terms, maybe as a cleanskin Face of the AFL type it is jealousy, I am not sure. Thoughts.

I have him 14th this year. Not as consistent as the others but his best games are up there with the best.

Why isn't Goodes consistent though he seems to have great years every 2 years. What does he do in his off year, off seasons?. I t is seriously baffling and it really affects his reputation as a player I'd love to know the reason for this. I suppose if Paul Roo's knew he could fix it, I suppose Goodes is just a football enigma that we should just enjoy while we can.

If the match is a draw - both teams’ best five players score 10,8,6,4,2
If the margin is 1-9 points - winners get 10,8,6,4,2; losers get 9,7,5,3,1
If the margin is 10-29 points - winners get 10,9,6,5,2; losers get 8,7,4,3,1
If the margin is 30-59 points - winners get 10,9,8,4,3; losers get 7,6,5,2,1
If the margin is 60-99 points - winners get 10,9,8,7,6; losers get 5,4,3,2,1
If the margin is 100+ points - winners get 10,9,8,7,6,5; losers get 4,3,2,1

Got a lot going for him, but there is one glaring weakness, his kicking. You would not want him shooting for goal after the siren in the GF so how can he be the best?
I would love him at the blues but he has some demons to deal with to be the best in my book.
