On Acres, I think he works well at Freo because of the defensive side they've built. At a free wheeling St Kilda, he was never this player.
As others have mentioned - we have the wings covered and I don't think we'd get the same Acres Freo has. Blues make sense for him.

As for us, short of landing Dunkley & De Goey, I don't see how we get the quick fix we need.
The two would balance the midfield out, address the X-Factor gap, plus both are decent fwd when the time calls for it. To the point where I think you can run Jones as CHF to Wright's FF and rotate JDG, Dunkley, Stringer & Perkins as mid/fwd's.

I'd have no issue offering 800k to both or even front loading contracts to them now.
If we weren't such a shambles, I reckon both would be doable.

Agree on Acres, he's not the player for us.

He's a 26 year old outside midfielder / wingman. We're a side that needs experienced inside grunt if we're picking up a midfielder, and that has a number of younger wing options with Langford, Martin & Durham all showing good potential there.

Also fairly sure he's not a Free Agent so we'd have to spend trade currency for a player that doesn't really suit what we need.

I don't think he costs us a bunch.
22 for Acres & Freo's 2nd probably lands it, and we get a player and reduce impact to the pick from a Davey bid.

I'd be more in for Stocker and Setterfield as midfield balance/depth options.
And we really should be putting the $$ in front of Dunkley to tempt that question.

Not convinced Freo let him go for an upgrade on their 2nd rounder, they've been pretty tough at the trade table since Bell came in.

If we're trading our 2nd for someone I'd like it to be Dev Robertson (though that may not be realistic).

If Dunkley goes to Brisbane on top of Ashcroft and Fletcher coming in, Dev could be gettable.
I'd ask the question of Berry too.

Lions will lose Zorko, Lyons & Robinson in near term though. So opps will open up.

My hunch is that they go along with the drivel about contested possessions or the contest because they know it gets the job done. It deflects attention from having to say anything remotely sophisticated about a game they say it takes at least 50 hours a week to coach.

I dont understand how you can play a match against an opponent, let that guy run free and the give him best on ground when your team loses, not when you could stop him.

I reckon the match itself is a more significant reflection of what coaches think.

I didn't mention the worst players. I suspect the coaches couldn't give 2 shits about the votes so they check the stat sheet and base voting on that, as the umpires (who cant seem to see 28 of the 36 players on the field) appear to do.

...atleast they get to use their favorite flawed buzz term

he's great 'in and around the ball'

not sure how many times i've seen a player in the ball.

I think Acres goes for two second rounders. They just played in a semi where he was best on, they aren’t looking to weaken their list and strengthen direct opposition.

If true, stocker needs to pull his head in.

Stolen from the Carlton rumour thread.
Was chatting to my mate and he passed on a bit of info to me.

We're interested in potentially drafting a number of VFL boys - Leui and Cahill in particular.

Expect a trade request to come from Acres any day now, his guess is between Wednesday and Friday.

Voss is unhappy about the long terms deals on Martin/Williams/Gov, and has been very vocal on not offering long term contracts moving forward for any players traded into the club. If they're coming to Carlton for the contract then we've picked the wrong player, they need to want to play for the club. We're trying to build a culture of players taking unders both salary and contract length wise.

Bit of talk coming out now that Williams is apparently on the trade table, which I personally don't see happening but it does fit in with what I just mentioned.

Following on from above with the culture surrounding contracts, this is part of the reason why Stocker was moved on. My understanding is he was offered a 1 year deal on pretty much draftee salary ($150k). Been talked about on here a bit already by others, but Stocker's management were not happy, they were looking for 2-3 years on higher wage. There were other teams snooping around and offering better contracts than us even before he was delisted, so 100% he ends up at a different club next year.

Continuing on Stocker, the writing was on the wall for several months. Cripps gave him a massive spray during the Collingwood game pretty much for being a FIGJAM and not a team player, which is still so surprising to me. He was told by the club for several years to work on his endurance and aerobic capacity yet either didn't take it seriously or just didn't do enough. Despite his heroics and physicality, he was a liability for the VFL/AFL with his inability to run out games. That's sort of the gist of it but we'll never really know exactly why unless it comes straight from Stock's mouth.

It's sad that Stocker couldn't bounce back and have a career best year similar to LOB/Cottrell. The feedback the coaching group received from them two was that communication and guidance on specific roles was much more clear than under Teague. Hoping in 2023 we can see the same for Honey and Dow.

I'll just edit in this last bit I forgot, I've got Philp as my breakout star of 2023. Voss raved about him and apparently he was very close for to the rd 1 side for 2022. Just hoping he stays fit. Makes sense with his foot speed, you can see we lack that and the difference it makes when Fisher is around the ball.

Don't shoot the messenger just passing on what info I get told - Go Blues :blueheart:

Something that I'll add to this that I wasn't going to include in my original post on the topic.

Stocker was told point blank in a meeting that he needed to improve his fitness dramatically, that there was a program that would be designed for him over the summer and he told the coaches that in his opinion he was pleased with his own level of fitness and he didn't view it as an issue. This was the proverbial straw.

REDACTED this is why coaches have a say in list management. Coachability is huge and often the difference between success and failure.

Stocker demanded 3 years, unsure of the money but has been offered 400k elsewhere so probably around that mark (looks like we're getting Acres for less).

What’s going on at Freo??
Lobb, Acres, Logue, ruck guy, and now apparently Liam Henry wanting out ( I may have missed someone)

It was also reported that Kosi Pickett may be on the move (wtf?)

Anyone keen on Henry?
What’s he worth (second rounder and a fourth rounder back?)

Kosi…what’s he worth??

Liam Henry was Pick 9 in 2019, we'd be doing well to get him for a 2nd outright.

No to Blake Acres, he's not great.

cap mgmt I suspect.

Adding Jackson on big dollars, some absolute gems in Serong, Brayshaw, Darcy, Young, Chapman, etc to keep together.
Meek is too good to sit behind Darcy & Jackson.
Henry may/may not move. He's surely heir apparent to Walters.
Acres can chase money and isn't worth blowing your cap space on
Lobb -> Jackson i reckon is an upgrade, and Lobb has shown himself to be a bit flakey/mercenary-like. is this trade request 2 from Freo now?

Havent seen anything on Pickett. Where was that? Imagine it's a move home, but if its not we should absolutely get on him. Love him as a small fwd.

Its more that both are better hard ball teams than we are but are still looking to strengthen the area.

Brisbane has Zorko who's pretty much done, and Lyons who's not far off. They're getting in Ashcroft but if their window is 'now' they need a mature midfielder to help out Neale. Port have Wines are not much else.

Collingwood have an almost done Pendlebury, an injury prone Adams, and again, as in a win-now kind of window.

I'd like us to have a dip at both, and there's no way to know whether we have or haven't given we're far from an appealing destination right now.

Theyre both starting to lose a bit of depth. Port never really had any, although finally putting Rozee onball helps

Gray done, Boaks what 35?, Amon gone. Theyve had a heavy reliance on Wines and Boak for the past 2 years. Then its Drew, Rozee and Butters. Still not sure Butters body can hold up as a pure onballer so is better off as a high half fwd

Brisbane losing Lyons, Zorko, Robbo around that midfield. Finallly theyve put Berry back onball.

Neale, Mcluggage, Berry is really it. Rayner not ready it seems. Zac Bailey the most impactful half fwd in the game. Mcluggage can always go back to a wing aswell

We have better depth than port, just not the big guy like Wines and Rozee is probably a class above any of our mids. If Perkins can really come on as a big onballer and Stringer can play 18-20 games than that solves alot of the big guys issues around the stoppages.

Hmmm thought I had read about it (Pickett) online and could provide you the link…maybe I read it in the Hun when I was waiting for my coffee this morning.
They were banging on about something else (probably Jackson) and at the end of the article said “Kosi is also weighing up his options”. Nothing mentioned on the Melbs Bf page. Maybe I’m just losing my mind 🤷🏻‍♀️

They have depth issues. We don't have a department.

Cornes said something about Kosi on SEN this morning trade related. Didn’t catch it unfortunately

We’ve got the department which made finals last year. We’ve added/are adding Perkins, Hobbs and A Davey to that. Possibly pick #5 as well.

We may need to rebalance a bit depending on which kids come on and the level they reach, but the idea we have no department is well off base.

Last year? Before Carlton, Fremantle and Collingwood improved.

Before the Suns started to look a team, etc

When Parish was playing midfield full time for the first time since 2016, when McGrath did his knee mid-year and Caldwell and Shiel missed most of the year. Yes.
