I don't even think he needs polishing. I think he is fine as is and the weakness of the side make him and many of our defenders look poor, the difference being they are lower level draft picks so the expectations are far lower.

But I had a thought today after all the sackings maybe there is less leaks at the club at the moment. I mean normally we are so leaky that every player even consider get connected to us.

I don't think he's a key back. But forever and a day I've wanted our defence to be tall across most positions. It's been the structure of a lot of premiership teams in the last 20 years.

With only one genuine key defender Geelong average about 190.6cm across 8-10 rotating defenders with none under 6 foot.

This year we averaged about 187cm with games as a low as 185cm averages. I don't think anyone could thrive in that defence, compounded by the poor defensive pressure and weak offence of our midfield.

Good teams and defences just do not give opposition one on ones often. Our top 6 defenders for defensive 1 on 1 had a combined 299 from 22 games, that's including the likes of BZT who played only 12 games. Geelong gave up 210 in 25 games. We gave up 13.5 for their 8.4 a week. Plus the fact we gave up a lot more for out the back not from contest.

I think everyone knows Francis has talent. They would be hoping they can do something with the engine.

At the end of the day it has nothing to do with how he plays at either end and everything to do with the fact he is a one effort player who can not run out games. That was the question mark on him before he was drafted and still is now .
Having seen a lot of his VFL game’s live as well my view is he lacks the endurance and ability to constantly produce second and third effort’s.
It has nothing to do with ability or development as a defender or forward.

The best we will get is 71 or upgrade of 41 to 35 but why would they do that when they can pick him up for free as a DFA down the track. Reality is 71 is the best we will get.

You're probably right re the one on ones. The point is that in Sydney he almost certainly finds himself one out against a taller opponent on far fewer ocasions than he did with us. Playing behind forwards and mids who exert heaps of pressure, causing slow and pressured forward entries makes it much easier for Sydney backs generally and intercept markers in particular. Compared to say playing behind forwards who are allergic to applying pressure and a midfield with a few downhill skiers. McCartin brothers had a picnic most of the season from that benefit, looked a lot more fallible Saturday with the ball whizzing in hard and fast.

Limited leaks or nothing to actually leak because there is no actual interest.

I'm going with nothing to leak, given our record on balance. Time will tell I suppose.

Yep, I’ve mentioned Evans in the past and have seen him play a bit prior to being drafted. Great character, hard worker, tough as nails and he’s not just a forward either, can play through the midfield. I’d definitely have a look at him.
