He is 185cm according to Brisbane site. Plus we have a lack of midfield depth.
We should at least look at him.
I think he'd cost a bit considering brissy gave up a bit to move up 1 spot to get him. Depth i think we have, but we lack balance. We need some big bodied types (187cm+) to balance out Merrett, Shiel, Parish, McGrath, Caldwell, Hobbs

List spots may be an issue.(main list)
Ham - done.
Heppell - maybe retire but may not.
Hurley - depends on if he gets back on the park and what he does but retirement is on the cards.
Cutler - would be unlucky.
Francis - has to find some form and do we need him going forward as a half back.
Geulfi - fringe but is one of a very few that plays with a hard edge.
Stewart - another who does a reasonable job but may get squeezed out.
All fighting for a couple of spots.
Eyre and Brand the longer term prospects that we will get more of a look at as the year goes on but have not had much of a chance to get games and develop. We could delist and rookie but someone else may have a look. Personally would prefer to keep both.
Would be keeping Phillips as he is a cheap back up.
Eyre &/or Brand are prime candidates to be moved back to the rookie list as longer term prospects anyways. Essendon have a perchance for doing this to open up list spots. Fully expect one of the two to go this way post 2022.

As unlucky as he may be but Smith as a contract dump to the rookie list would not surprise me one bit. Saw a couple of things on the weekend that really makes me question his integrity about being an (Essendon) AFL player. Really selfish stuff and things Rutten wouldn't be impressed with imho.

Durham already has a contract and will need to be promoted. Nic Martin will be following suit shortly you'd think. That's maybe 5 spots that need to be created. Smith could be one moved to the rookie list if his form drops, although I thought he was good as the sub last game. I'd want to be in the team when the music stops.
edit: as a mature aged player, if McDonagh can't force his way into the side this year, he would be the one I'd shift to the rookie list.

IS there a pressing need to promote Martin &/or Durham if they are still eligible to be on the rookie list?

Ham, cutler certainties to go unless something drastically changes. Numbers will be tight as Martin should be extended any week now and tex is almost a certainty to be on the list next year. Hurley I think will retire, heppell either retires or plays on for 1 more. Then you have tippa out of contract, Stewart who could be moved on if they have confidence by the end of the year in the young talls. Whether Phillips stays or goes, you’d think that spot would be needed for a 3rd string Ruckman regardless.

Don't think you can say Cutler is a certainty to go at this point in the season.

If he doesn’t do something eye catching that makes them want to extend him. There aren’t many spots going to available and he’ll likely be an unlucky one that slips out, especially if heppell doesn’t retire.
Things can change, but right now he would be unlucky for that to happen. He has performed well in the 22 so far. A comparable player is McDonagh, who has a contract and hasn't done a lot in the VFL. Cutler was best on in the VFL before forcing his way into the AFL side.

That’s the point though, he doesn’t have a contract…. Mcdonagh does.

Well, I'm not in charge but I'd wear the 1 year of a draftee contract. We agree Cutler would be unlucky. Cutler has been a best 22 player this year and performing well. I guess we disagree on him being a certainty to be delisted at the end of the year.

Yep

Trading AFL standard mids is not a luxury we can afford
‘AFL standard’ really just means getting adequate game time through that portion of the ground.

Look at the ‘improvements’ guys like Kennedy and Brodie have made this year after being afforded some opportunity in the middle. Did Hewett really get that much better in one pre-season with Carlton? Hell, where would Parish be right now if Shiel didn’t get injured last year?

You could find a number of fringe/state league mids that could put up 20 touches and a few clearances a game at AFL level if you gave them Shiel’s midfield time. For the 700/800k he is on we should have someone who genuinely influences games.

Cutler isn’t a best 22 player, he’s been in the side due to injury.

This. He's been getting some kudos of late for looking a better player than he did at the beginning of last year, but is coming off a very low base (he well earned the Egg moniker, let's all remember) and if EFC is a team aspiring to play in the business end of September, I can't see Tom being anything but a passenger in the 22 at that time of year: and premiers don't carry passengers.

I get the last sentiment, but if there are fringe mids out there who can do a brodie/kennedy, we can afford them and shiel.
What we cant afford is trading shiel (who is a proven good mid) and hoping one or two fringe players come on.

If we had a double blow in the midfield this week with injuries, we have one mid we can call on and he'd be making his debut. Such is our midfield depth.

Did Hewett really get that much better in one pre-season with Carlton?

No, he just rarely played in the middle. He's pretty much the same player he was at Sydney but not stuck behind a collection of Kennedy, Parker, Heeney, Mills et al

Look at the ‘improvements’ guys like Kennedy and Brodie have made this year after being afforded some opportunity in the middle.

Brodie was always able to win the ball at AFL level when he played, it was his off the ball work that had him in and out of the side.

You could find a number of fringe/state league mids that could put up 20 touches and a few clearances a game at AFL level if you gave them Shiel’s midfield time

Shiel would dominate the VFL if he played here, he's miles above the fringe guys you refer to, let's not try to pretend this is a valid argument for trading him.

Care to elaborate?

Durham did something really good (may have been a spoil) and Devon was close by, no helping hand up, no pat on the back. Just walked straight past him. Poor team morale.

Open play and he chose glory over team play in another instance.

I just feel if we are to move forward as a team, Devon Smith is on borrowed time. Richmond circa 2017 would not stand for this. We need to get this out of him

Is that all? Bloody hell, I thought he’d abused a teammate at least. Not saying Dev isn’t on borrowed time, but that’s not the catalyst for a sacking/list demotion.

Reading a lot into that.
