Reading a lot into that.
Is that all? Bloody hell, I thought he’d abused a teammate at least. Not saying Dev isn’t on borrowed time, but that’s not the catalyst for a sacking/list demotion.

Im not saying it's enough to be moved on ahead of time, am merely suggesting he is on borrowed time.

I keep thinking about would >player x / action y< fit in at a successful side and a player like Devon would get found out very quickly in a Richmond system for example. A Geelong system.

I get the last sentiment, but if there are fringe mids out there who can do a brodie/kennedy, we can afford them and shiel.
What we cant afford is trading shiel (who is a proven good mid) and hoping one or two fringe players come on.

If we had a double blow in the midfield this week with injuries, we have one mid we can call on and he'd be making his debut. Such is our midfield depth.
We definitely need to start sniffing round the state leagues and other lists to get some depth in. I couldn’t spot one inside mid in our VFL team last week. In saying that, I wouldn't be against exploring what Shiel could get us. Could we turn Shiel + some draft capital into Hopper? Would it open up the possibility of De Goey? I wouldn’t give Shiel the Treloar treatment, but I’m interested to see what we could turn him into.

It's going to be interesting to see who gets cut come the end of the year. A lot of raw prospects that could be given a couple more years.

Ham and Hurley unlikely to be playing in 2023 i’d suspect.
But apart from them, who really looks like a more than likely player to get cut? Heppell maybe? Francis could be traded, but the rest are more likely to be kept than cut at this stage IMO

Heppell and/or Smith retiring would be helpful from a list spot perspective
Smith has another year on his contract though.

No, he just rarely played in the middle. He's pretty much the same player he was at Sydney but not stuck behind a collection of Kennedy, Parker, Heeney, Mills et al

Brodie was always able to win the ball at AFL level when he played, it was his off the ball work that had him in and out of the side.

Shiel would dominate the VFL if he played here, he's miles above the fringe guys you refer to, let's not try to pretend this is a valid argument for trading him.
I wasn’t talking about Shiel being a VFL player. I picked a handful of guys that have been given the opportunity to play prominent midfield roles to illustrate how a) How an AFL standard midfielder can be created overnight if the right player is given appropriate minutes and b) that all these player’s output has been similar to Shiel this year, yet they’re probably on half the coin he is. As such, we shouldn’t consider him untouchable. Say we gave a guy like Paddy Dow the midfield time of Shiel, would we be that worse off? He’d probably pickup 20 disposals, show a bit of speed and kick it just as poorly. Yet we’d save ourselves 400k and have a reasonable draft pick in hand. Just some food for thought.

IF the players on the rookie list DO NOT have to be upgraded to the main list I wouldn't be doing so right now. How many best 25 players are in this discussion? Martin? Snelling?

If anyone saw the tweet from Cal Twomey that he expects us to go out for a big fish in FA then surely we can pay out a guy like McDonagh who sounds well off it right now as well.

Its just today's society that highlights what player x CAN'T do rather than what they CAN do.

Worth noting on the Essendon watch list should firmly be Finn Calaghan. More outside than inside but blew up in his draft year to go top 5. Loved the sound of him and wanted him to slip and feel Dodoro would be all over his availability at the end of the year.

Right now we should be asking questions of

Tom Green
Tim Taranto
Jacob Hopper
Finn Calaghan

But what if player y can do much the equivalent of player x, which allows you to get player z? Now that’s some tomorrow society talk.

I think essendons list mgmt is the biggest thing that has held us back in the last few decades. Dodo can find talent and make trades but we keep players like Devon Smith, Francis, zerk And even hurley on the list for a year or two too long. They were bloody debating keeping the crippled hooker. Nobody was offering these players the extra years we gave. I can't understand why we feel the need to lock up replaceable players for extra years. It has a culmatative impact and nothing will change until dodo is gone.

I'm saying we should have moved these players on when they had value. Clubs supposedly going hard at Nick byran is another example. Time will tell but has his value gone up or down this year considering he is not getting a game behind a 30 year old journeyman

That's actually not true at all. If you look at the OOC list each year we are consistently in the top 3 or 4 for the size of our OOC list. Hurley got 6 years in 2016 when the Dogs were offering similar, Hooker 5 years with a lot of interest from WA. Francis has only ever gotten 1 or 2 year extensions. Zerk got a 2 year extension last year with some interest coming from Port I believe. The only ones I would argue got poor deals were Kommer (got a 3 year extension based off an okay 1st year) and Devon getting 2 years last year, which isn't even that bad really.

Wait, what? You just did some weird sorcery.

There's a post ant555 wrote a day ir so ago explaining a lot of the list turnover. It's probably not been as ignored as you think.

I don't think we lose anything by having traded Devon Smith, zerk, Francis and byran when clubs were supposedly into them. We don't have much top end talent so using it on picks with elite potential is my solution. So stop holding onto ok players and aim for some elite potential picks or players that fill actual needs. Happy to hear any solution or the reasons why we have been Mediocre for 20 years. Mediocre drafts, trading, list mgmt strategy seems pretty obvious to me.

Yeah we’re not trading Bryan and there’s no point trading Francis for peanuts if all it gets us is a free list spot. Zerk-Thatcher is still useful as depth until Reid, Brand or Eyre are ready. We have 4 1st round draft picks from the last two years and so far only one has solidly found his feet so we’re still a developing side and will be for a while yet.

I think clubs do see that 20 year old rucks are not ready to play senior footy 99% of the time. His value has gone no where.

GWS have enquired about Nick Bryan. Can confirm

St.Kilda offered what again for Draper before he even played a game?

It happens and is all part of the ruck - merry - go - round we see at the end of each year.
