I think I have nailed why I don't like Snelling and that is, as much as it sucks, he is limited in what he can do. He is not quick enough to be a pressure forward, he is not smart enough to be a roving forward, he lacks something to make it as a wingmen, he isn't big or strong enough to be a midfielder yet he has forged out a career of 60 odd games in what has been a pretty dull period for the Essendon Football Club.
He is smart enough. If he wasn’t he would not have played 60 games.
He keeps getting a game because he is one of a limited number of players who has any idea about defending.
He is most likely going to be replaced by Alwyn Davey who has the same footy smarts and a bit of X factor anyway . He has done a job we needed as there was not really anyone else.
The bigger issue is our top end players. None of our best 5 players can carry the side to a victory. Snelling is the least of our worries.

pidge locksdown pretty well imo, just can't dispose of the ball without it being a turnover or a 50/50
Id rate kelly better, more so that he operates within his limitations when it comes to disposal,.but he wears his man like a glove

Pidge is great one on one, but he loses his man a lot and his distribution is poor

I reckon snell gets another 2 years to cover daveys development

For an msd pick he's panned out quite nicely.

i'd agree, but i think in a vacuum both are good, pidge just has a shocking kick

Watch Parish closely.

He runs patterns in the centre of the ground which are almost identical.
Sure, but how is that working for him and us?

I can’t think of an A grade midfielder who is driven to, or allowed to, play that way.

I want the ball in the hands of a better user than Parish. But the answer isn’t getting Massimo own the centre square as a receiver. Even coming in after the centre bounce, toughness is still required to play in the middle of the field. You might get on the end of a few chains but you also have to tackle and win hard ball.

Dream even bigger - we could one day even have someone in there who could be competitive in the air.

I think he is done simply because we do not have the list space.

I hope not. He’s done very well as a msd pick and gets a pass mark everyday of the week, but isn’t up to it as a league small forward and is behind plenty to play up the ground now where he plays his best footy.. he’s on the chopping board for me this off season

I think Pidge is a great 20-25m kick when there's not a lot of pressure. He's not a great long kick and he's often not a good kick under pressure. Unfortunately he seems to have also lost some pace.

He needs some kind of specialised training.

Most likely to not be offered another contract for mine are (in alphabetical order).

Heppell, Lord, McBride, Phillips, Snelling and Voss.

I reckon Stewart could retire/paid out.

Does Tippa get a contract over Snelling if hes in the side

Are we giving Hunter a year over Voss after seeing him for 2 games? 1 of which he did very little in

I think Tippa gets another year. Was always going to take this year to get him right.

Voss just seems to have no future spot for mine. Basically competing with Langford and Stringer whereas Hunter is competing with Jones and Weideman and the spot is wide open.

Having said that I could see both Snelling and Voss staying on the list. The six players I named were just my most likely.

With Voss i think we could play a forward line of

2MP, H.Jones/Georgiades, Langers and Voss

But would require more mid time and cbas for Stringer

Or
2MP, Voss, Langers and Stringer

Do you think we’d delist him? I can’t quite see it, just trying to look at it from this season.

I think we have something like 18 players who played less than 5 games this year. Wouldn’t you think a few of those lose their spot before him? And Scott seems to like him.

I'd have no issue giving tippa a year. If this was about a year to effectively preseason up, i take his talent over most on the list.

Voss, snelling, guelfi, hunter, monty - these guys we need to ask whether they're worth continued punts.
No one wants to hear it, but heppell too.

Imagine lord, mcbride and if we can shift stewart into retirement are the only list spots id be confident we're freeing up.

Mass and baldwin i keep as both have skills worth persisting with that weve seen work at afl level.

All the coaches like him because he plays the game plan without question. I just wonder if he loses his spot simply because there are not many spots .

Agree re the coaches - and I can understand why.

I don’t mind him for depth.

Do you think there’ll be a shortage of list spots? You don’t think we’ll get rid of a fair few players end of the year?

We already have 1 too many players on the list

2 too many if Ben Mckay is coming to us as it sounds likely reading between the lines

We then have all our draft picks in the first 3 rounds which at this point some would say youd want to use all 3 or one atleast on a Baldwin upgrade. Our 3rd is pick 44 currently

Lord, Tippa, Snelling, Phillips (Who would be replaced by a ruck anyway), Heppell (I think deserves another year) are some players on the main list who dont have a contract for next year. There isnt much else

I wouldn't be surprised if we amalgamated our 2nd and 3rd rounders to move up.

A team like the dogs for example might be interested in moving their pick from the Lions in Croft looks like a top 15 pick.
Suns are already shopping their first. Our F1 with 27 and 46 attached might be the basis of a deal for example.

Use the third pick to upgrade a rookie.

I think people have always questioned Snelling. The issue has been it is fine to say move him on but who is going to do the same job ? I think he will get delisted. They will use one of the midfielders in his role going forward.

No way Heppell goes on for me . He is playing okay footy but he is also filling a spot at half back that we need to get some drive from.

If Walla can not break into the side by the end of the year then that may be over.

I think it has been very obvious that we are 3 or 4 years away. Scott has not even scratched the surface. There was a very clear message to the club from Scott that if you think we are close then I am not the man for the job because you are not. People really need to get their heads around the fact that this is another rebuild and it may well take another 3 to 5 years to see IF it actually works. We are an average side.
Oh look, a forward who plays a role and doesn't kick goals every week and still gets selected whenever he's fit, by every Essendon coach we've had since he got here... almost like there's more to being a forward than having the ball land on your head and kicking it through the big sticks. 🤔

I mean he has played 4 games in the VFL and then also been sub in a game this year

Ultimately we want guys prepared to have his mindset that have more weapons and ability like Davey x2, Guelfi, Menzie, Wanganeen play his position

I doubt McKay leaves for <650k which would equate to band 2. Pay him the extra $100k~ to get band 1 so Norf are happy. He's a skilled, ready made KPD which we badly need and he costs nothing in terms of trade. The extra $100-50k is nothing.

If Parish stays, McKay is a no brainer.

It sounds like hes told the club he just wants out

And North are happy with pick 19 acc to HSun

The AFL will either give North Sanders, Band 1 compo for Mckay and pay part of his salary, or give a pick 10 compensation imo

Need to remember they did 12 months ago give them pick 19, 37 aswell
