We have lost players, been smashed by injuries, most of our young talent hasn't exactly come on and the new recruits excluding Kauffman havent looked like world beaters

Yep, seemingly everything has gone wrong so far this season

The worst part is even if we are crap, we won't be as crap as wce, meaning they will still get some concessions and we won't get the top picks
Yep we really needed our normal picks to at least cover the holes in the list from the players who left (which we received zero picks from) and then the worst draft hand of any club - hilarious.

Yes unfortunately I don't really have any optimism for the ladies heading into this one - agree we got smashed at the draft with poor handling by the AFL (no surprises), we've lost too much talent since the Fortress Freo of 2020; the Duffy debacle - I think Cain was a big loss as was Houghton, albeit not her best season last year, but with that zippy pace and marking ability it suited our gung-ho forward style.....I just don't see massive improvements on the list coming through, Roux looked gassed and slow last year compared to her break-out in 2020, and overall the list just doesn't feel like it's in as exciting a shape. If Miller misses a few rounds through injury or her and Bowers go down, I can see us losing more than winning, sadly...there's a few injuries to potentially our most exciting players: Morrison, Tuks; Ebony long-term. Tildy Sarge with recurring problems - Sharp missing etc. Then you add in other teams improving, like Richmond...there are players who just don't fill me with great confidence, like Webb in the middle.

Then you factor in a quick turn-around new season with potential wet games in Perth...saw how sluggish and unattractive the practice game can be in wetter conditions, the girls skills (sadly) are still works in progress compared to the mens who have obviously been playing this sport since the Dinosaur eras.....

I dunno, it just doesn't bode well for me, I don't have great expectations. I hope there's enough there to get back into finals but I'm not even confident there.

Hoping for the best, expecting...not so much......

I dont think we will conquer all in front of us but i dont think the slide will be as bad as some posters have suggested.

Losing the wings is absolutely our biggest loss. Didn't have Duffy lat year so can't really point to her as being a reason we will slide. We will love it next season when Morrison comes back but she didn't rally play last season much.

One poster said the young ones havent come on but i think Verrier, East, Hyde and Low would disagree. Also I think Strom is better than most posters do and seemingly is still improving. I would love to see Tuhakaraina on the wing. We'll miss her for the first few games

Having Cuthbertson fit is key as it means Tighe can go forward. Fingers crossed that Roux steps up and that Franklin gets some consistency of opportunity and some confidence. There is a definite X factor missing in the forward line which is. concern

Gore and Seth in the midfield will add some bigger bodies which i think is one place we struggle with. I think Webb is a better player than the way she played last year. I dont think we should hope Turbo carries us but she missed three last year

I think Kaufmann can cover for the loss of Kara A in forward line and I think Scanlon will play. I also think Lally may prove to be a huge find. The others i feel will develop this year and we will be excited about in 2023

Im looking forward to the season as much as I am looking forward to going to the Grand Final and watching Mundy win the game after the siren.

Madi Scanlon debuting this weekend as well!

🚨 [SHAMELESS PLUG KLAXON] 🚨

she still needs a buddy...

While we love Sarah Black for popping our captain in at #2 on the best players in the AFLW, we also think she’s a little bit of an idiot for not finding a place anywhere in her too 30 for Turbo. Clearly a top 5 player in the comp.

Didn't she have Turbo at around 7? Or am I misremembering?

Actually, it was 6:

o.6 KIARA BOWERS (Fremantle)

Previous rankings: No.2 2022 S6, No.3 2021, No.11 2020

A combination of injury and suspension held Bowers to eight of a possible 12 games in 2022, but she still led the way on the field when selected.

The Dockers superstar was so dominant when playing, she finished sixth in the AFLW best and fairest (although ineligible to win) from six of 10 home and away games.

Her numbers speak for themselves – averaging 22.0 disposals, 13.0 contested possessions, 6.8 clearances and 11.5 tackles – but the limited number of games played made it difficult to rank Bowers any higher.

TBF, as much as Black screwed it in previous years, I agree it's hard to place Turbo in the top 5 on the back of only 2/3 of a season

Perfect time for someone to select Amy as a buddy too, along with Madi Scanlon. Get in on the ground floor with these stars and say you've been their buddy from their first game.

This would be interesting:

"Gemma Houghton’s heart belonged to Fremantle. An inaugural Docker, two-time All-Australian, and the club’s all-time leading goal kicker, Houghton and her flair are synonymous with Fremantle’s six-year AFLW existence. But she never thought her heart, the one that once dripped purple, would break so suddenly.

In July last year, Houghton lost her best friend and tattoo artist, Nicholas Duff, after a battle with mental health. Houghton spent almost every day speaking to him, phone call after phone call, until one day he didn’t answer. The grief was intense and it followed her onto the football field when the season started come January. “When you lose someone so close to you, you naturally lose a bit of passion in life and lose sight of where you’re heading,” Houghton said. “I couldn’t get it back.”

Houghton felt like she couldn’t be the player her teammates had come to expect of her. While she was still hitting the scoreboard, except for a stretch of four games late in the season, Houghton couldn’t find joy in the game she adored. When that feeling crept into the off-season, Houghton knew she needed to make a change.

Then, Port Adelaide came calling. “To be honest, I saw myself playing my whole career at Fremantle,” Houghton said. “That’s the way I felt. I love the club. Six years together… we had some really tough seasons together and some incredible seasons, especially 2020. I was very proud of us and what we did that year. “It was obviously a short turnaround between seasons and I had some personal reasons for wanting to leave WA. I was out of contract. “(With) what happened to me personally,

I felt getting out of Perth and getting a fresh start would help me get back to my best football.” For a brief moment, Houghton explored a cross-town trade to West Coast. But ultimately, a complete upheaval was what she needed. “I’m a very big family person. I was thinking how I could get my passion back for the game and get out of the space I was in without having to leave my family,” she said. “As an athlete, you look at all options. In the end, I spoke with a few close family and friends and came to the decision.

“I grew up supporting Port. I’ve also always looked up to Erin Phillips and she’s been a big part of my journey when I was at Freo and she was at the Crows.” The Phillips factor has loomed large since before the pair were in teal. A former basketballer herself, Houghton and Phillips shared several conversations as opposition players before deciding to continue their journeys together. “We did talk and share experiences as two forwards in the competition.

Even though you have friends in other teams, there’s still that support and I think it’s great for women in sport to grow the game,” Houghton said. Houghton also isn’t alone in making the switch. The sandgroper influence is strong in South Australia, with fellow former Docker Maggie MacLachlan, Subiaco midfielder Abbey Dowrick, Claremont goal sneak Tessa Doumanis and East Fremantle key forward Julia Teakle all jumping the border to sign with Port.

“Julia Teakle has come into our forward line and really impressed me with her overhead marking. She’s a young player but she plays with so much confidence,” Houghton said. “Abbey Dowrick was really impressive in the pre-season match with her competitiveness and the way she goes about playing.” It’s fitting in that way that Houghton will return to Perth for Port Adelaide’s first game when the Power make their AFLW debut against West Coast at Mineral Resources Park on Saturday.

A win would mean a lot, but Houghton is also content knowing she is back on the right path. “Even though I’ve been here in South Australia for maybe 10 weeks now, I feel like I’ve got that passion back,” she said. “I think we’re going to go into every game not focused on winning or losing. Regardless of the results at the end of a game, we’ll walk off the field knowing we’ve played the Port Adelaide way. “The club is buzzing. Our men’s season has finished now so it feels like we have an entire army behind us.”
