also I'd argue that being seen to be dragged kicking and screaming to give anything to the lower tax brackets doesn't really make people grateful for the tax cut in the same way them making the change up front would have

also the offsets and other things ending at the same time have meant a lot of people got tax bills this year

if the election is in may a lot of people are going to remember the tax bill not the little bit extra they get in their take home now if they remember anything at all

So punish ALP for improving something left over from coalition?

Btw petrol prices still fluctuate, but on the whole they are trending lower

wut?

Stage 3 tax cuts put extra money in almost everyone's pockets after the ALP modified it. You can't help it putting more money (as an absolute) in the pockets of those who pay more tax.
anyone earning above the tax free threshold but the bottom end of that is like $50 a year

It doesn't help people on welfare payments, it doesn't help people earning below the tax free threshold

it helps people earning more, by a larger margin than it helps people earning less

they made multiple change to multiple brackets so they absolutely could have adjusted how it worked

they didn't raise the tax free threshold either

as I said it wasn't good policy and for a lot of people their cost of living has gone up by way more than the $140 a month in their pocket

of course nobody is going to say they don't like having more money in their pocket but COL has eaten up all of that and more so for most people they are still worse off post that, not as badly as without it but it doesn't mean they will see it as much help

A handy exercise is to imagine you lost your home, lost your current job and had to move out into a room rental - how long would it take you to save up the $200,000 deposit to then borrow the rest of the $650k to buy a place?

I'd never get there, life is too expensive. That's the reality for people who missed out.

Govt circulated lots of free money into the system during covid.

plus people when locked down into a tiny apartment wanted more space and to move.

Try it on an election poster?

Actually many voters will see the hurdles their kids find becoming adults.

John Howard thought workchoices would fly because it wouldn’t affect the already secure.

Lots of people voting thought of their kids when reacting at next election

None of which has anything to do or started when with labor being elected. People say migration, but hptney went up in covid travel bans

Both major parties take the easy choice for keeping the economy on life support with an injection of immediate spending/demand.

Unless they also increase funding to services then everyone pays for that, including new Australians.

If you ever wonder why people don't have children and what government can do to make that easier - they don't intend for you to, they don't benefit from 20 years later having more tax payers in the market. They benefit now by keeping you at work and bringing in more people to work. Not by paying for children to go to school.

of course that is what you would take out of this

last ACCC report doesn't show a downward trend

Wait until pre-Christmas. Petrol Prices will skyrocket again.

Northern hemisphere energy costs coming into winter would soak up supply. The US has turned up the tap a lot in the last six months to try and bring down the cost of living prior to the election and it's basically just keeping it bubbling along.

In a progressive tax system with thresholds, if you cut tax on those earning $30k, you then cut tax on every single person who earns more.
yes but they made changes to multiple brackets at the same time

so it wasn't just people on higher incomes getting the benefits of changes to lower brackets

You are correct. For whatever reason the ALP Government decided to reduce the tax breaks for higher income earners rather than remove them altogether.

I expect in an attempt to placate those on higher incomes that they were still getting something directly out of it

Lets not forget that politicians are high income earners and will be getting benefits from the tax break. Didn't want to kill it entirely as supposed to help brack creep.
