Actually, I'm with the other bloke who has asked - where did you pull these from? Show me where you got the contested marks stat from and that he allegedly had a broken foot.

Rocca lead the league with 2.7 contested marks per game
Reiwoldt second with 2.2 per game
Lucas took 1.5 per game

He broke his foot against West Coast

OK, which year did he lead the league for contested marks?

I do not where this stastic is but I do know that the Collingwood coaches said on a number of occasions that Rocca is leading the competition in contested marks. This may be something that they have done internally however I do not know.

2006 from memory. Rocca got stick for being unfit (fair enough) but he still destroyed many opponents 1-on-1. Surprisingly good on the deck too.

The other extraordinary stat that year was Didak had the most goal-assists in 2006, and Tarrant was top 10 IIRC.

U got a link? He averaged just 5.0 total marks per game in 2006 (as opposed to this year when he was shizenhousen of 5.5 total marks per game) so even if he did happen to lead contested marks it probably would only be 2 or 3 per game. The rest of what he does (or doesn't do more to the point) is what makes this stat worthless.

It must be true, you couldn't even make that stuff up! :D

What a bunch of gooses all you people calling this a silly thread.

NO ROCCA NO COLLINGWOOD

most contested marks in the afl over 50 goals leading the assist at collingwood. 2 defenders on him a game. remember fellas his job is to make a contest and bring the ball down for the likes of didak, leon and medhurst.

but scott lucas had a gun year should have been all australian kiked 8 in the last game for hirds farewell who cares because you have no other forwards to kick to because lloyds on the way out.

i think kicking 7 goals in a qtr had west cost (glass, hunter and staker) somewhat apprehensive.

lucas is an absolute gun.

3 + years of over 50 goals from CHF, one best and fairest at chb and a premiership player
I was at that game, 5 of the goals he kicked in the last quarter were on Brett Jones, I think 2 were on Hunter.

Good job on getting a link (even though I can't see it because I'm not registered).

OK, so he averaged between 2 and 3 contested marks per game. That stat shows that a contested mark isn't really part of the game anymore (the fact the 3rd highest number is around half of the highest number). It's the rest of his game which lets him down - the kicking goals, getting general possessions, chasing, etc etc. I've watched him play quite a few times and he's like a lot of forwards who tend to drift up towards the wing more when he's not getting a kick closer to goal. When a key forward who should be playing deep takes a mark on the wing it almost never hurt the opposition.

Only 7 players in the league averaged more than 2 contested marks per game in 2007, Rocca was dominant with 2.7 per game!

Lloyd and Lucas BOTH kicked over 60 goals in '07... how many did Rocca kick?

Yeah, and Lloyd was coming off a serious injury. I didn't think even Collingwood supporters would try and argue that Rocca is better.

Well this proves that the stat for highest average contested marks mean absolutely nothing these days. Even the most staunch Rocca supporter concedes he's had a very ordinary year but yet he tops this stat (with a whopping 0.675 per quarter of football).

I hope for one Rocca keeps playing for as long as is humanly possible - that way, Collingwood's opponent in any finals game will be sure things.
As one poster previously said, Anthony Rocca is "Mr. September".
Anthony isn't a pimple on the backside of his brother Sav as far as football achievements go.

I take it you didn't watch the Sydney final?

Contested marks are one of the most important stats in the game, being able to outbody an opponent and pull down a pack mark is almost a lost art. Rocca does this better than anybody else in the league.

He has his strengths and weaknesses.......he is incredibly valuable, if Rocca has an impact the pies win, it really is that simple. The only problem being that he can be absolutely terrible, and is terrible too often!

Lucas the more consistent and better of the two, but Rocca gets rubbished way more than he deserves to be. Kicked 9 goals in the finals series, and played the final game with a broken foot, most KP forwards would be satisfied with an average of 3 goals per game in finals! Yet Rocca is rubbished by all because Scarlett beat him, for fecks sake Scarlett beats everybody!!

Mate, if your basing Anthony's performance in one final against Sydney (which Richmond probably would have won as well) then you are deluding yourself. Even the most ardent Collingwood supporter would have to admit that Rocca has not performed well on the big stage. His only touches against the Eagles were when Glass was off the field (otherwise un-sighted) and against Geelong, the Pies may as well have gone in with only 21 players.

Sydney are past it. You beat West Coast without Judd, Kerr and Cousins.

Collingwood have some great youngsters coming through but the retirements of Buckley and Clement will be a tremeandous strain... as it would be on any team, I don't think Rocca can stand up to be that senior leader you will need in '08. Burns and Wakelin will both be 33 next year, sounds like without Rocca stepping up you won't have the right balance of young and old!

Well look at it this way, that's one of Rocca's better years for goalkicking, that was one of Lloyd's worst (in a full season). Rocca is your no. 1 forward, Lloyd is still our no. 1 and is treated accordingly... double-teamed every game. Someone mentioned Rocca being double-teamed, I don't think I've ever seen Rocca get the ball when he's had more than one player on him... or any for that matter!

I have not at any time here suggested that Rocca is consistent or better than Lucas or anything like that. You suggested that he never performs on the big stage, I would say that although he hasn't been consistent, some of his best games are on the big stage. Even against West Coast it was a show of character when being beaten to stand up when it counted. He hurt himself badly yet came back and was fantastic. Geelong he was terrible but had a broken bone in his foot.

Kicked 4 goals in a grand final, missed another grand final through suspension and we were hopeless.

This raises some major concerns on your match committee if they're playing lame players don't you think? If they run out onto the ground the old 'injured' excuse should not be used if they play badly. He still had a Collingwood jumper on and still was on the ground.
