You get a sense this is a career-defining/sliding doors game for Ruscoe, VFL form has been more solid than scintillating, if he comes in and plays well he may have a future, play poorly and he'll wallow in the VFL until cut.

Given our injury list I feel like the team and selections are as balanced as can be.

My Dad served as a Leftenant in Borneo crossing into Indo with legit headhunters as trackers with his platoon. He literally was only able to talk about it with me last year as there was a 50year embargo of silence as it was a top secret mission sanctioned by ASIO (100% true). His unit as it turns out ended up being the blueprint for SAS training. His best mate was re-drafted on the day he was to go home and died within hours of landing in Vietnam.

I wondered why I could never get him to talk about the war. I know he got PTSD and he cried when he could finally talk about it. My Dad never cries. He came back a changed man. My parents divorced and he ended up an alcoholic (now nearly 30 years clean .. go Dad!).

He doesn’t observe Anzac Day saying that a lot of the people that attend the marches etc were cooks and mechanics etc and never saw action. A lot that did want no part in remembering it.

He’s a one eyed Pies fan and some of my earliest memories are shoulder rides to Vic Park to watch the Woods together.

I still observe the minute’s silence for those that remain silent. But think it’s time to move on from “celebrating” Gallipoli. It’s a conflict over 100 years old with no remaining diggers alive. IMO more focus needs to be on soldiers from WW2, Afghanistan and Vietnam etc that don’t get much of a voice.

War is s**t. War is pointless. Violence is never the answer.

I’ve always been ambivalent about the day, and the way it’s merged with this celebrated football game in Victoria.

My experience of relatives who went to war, including Vietnam, is that they say very little about it. The ‘silence’ you refer to. And none of them, save for one uncle (WWII eg who died 20 years ago) ever attended the march.

And now we have this major event, which somehow seems - not quite right?

But for me, I regard our club’s opportunity to play as a great honour. And tomorrow I’m going to my first Anzac game in years.

The downside is that Bombers fans will be there too. Not my favourite cohort of fans.

Is Ruscoe good enough aerially to go with Weideman? If so, it frees us up with optimal matchups elsewhere in defence, and allows Frampton to ruck all day.
