I see that Boof Lehmann has made another stack of runs against WA. Martyn's form since the Ashes hasn't been too shabby either.

Let's say age isn't a factor, are these guys among the 7 best 5-day batsmen in Australia?

For mine, they definently both are. Martyn didn't suddenly just "lose it" over the Ashes, and in the 18 months before that was probably Australia's best batsman. And Lehmann is just a genius. He's the type of guy who'll keep on playing till 38-39 and keep on slaughtering State attacks. I think much of the criticism of Ponting's captaincy during the Ashes can be put down to Lehmann not having been in England.

As an all-round package, when you include the fact that he averages 27 or so with the ball (better than MacGill :p . But seriously, v. handy partnership breaker) and having probably the best cricket brain in Australia, IMO, then you have someone who is definently within the top 11 cricketing packages within Aus.

Marto is very stiff, the batting scape goat from the Ashes. Pre-England tour he was in good touch:

Code:
2003-2004 SRL v AUS 3 6 0 0 2 161 333 55.50 2 0
2004-2005 AUS v SRL 2 4 0 2 0 97 203 50.75 0 0
2004-2005 Border-Gavaskar Trophy 4 8 0 2 2 114 444 55.50 2 0
2004-2005 Trans-Tasman Trophy 2 3 1 1 0 70 83 41.50 0 0
2004-2005 AUS v PAK 3 4 1 1 2 142 310 103.33 2 0
2004-2005 NZL v AUS 3 3 0 0 1 165 235 78.33 1 0
2005 The Ashes 5 9 0 1 0 65 178 19.78 4 0

Age wise, for team balance its best for Australian cricket to introduce a Hussey and/or Hodge into the system ahead of him.

Marto is Averaging 16.5 in the Pura Cup, superstar stuff that :thumbsu:

His one day form has been fine and thats why he is still in the one day team

Lehmann is always in the top 7 batsman, Marto isnt anymore

the timing of this thread is terrible. boof has just made a triple ton, what do you want us to say. clarke and katich are in terrible form at the moment. so going on all the evidence to hand then yeah boof and marto are still good enough, but the aussies had to retire them off one by one so there aren't huge implications on the team down the track.

since the retirement of s.waugh australia are 17-3-4.

Best 7 batsmen in Oz:

1. Ponting
2. Gilchrist
3. Hayden
4. Langer
5. Hodge
6. Hussey
7. Jaques

Bullshit Ponting, Gilchrist, Hayden, Langer and maybe Hodge are in the best seven batsman but Hussey and Jacques you have to be joking. Lehmann and Martyn are way better than those two plus you could throw in the likes of Jimmy Maher and David Hussey who i believe is better than his brother.

Well you can question the standards of the state level but Boof certainly could still play at the highest level. Making 300 against a state side is a fair effort in anybodys language.

Hell he even made what 150 the other week against pretty much the current Australian bowling lineup when we played NSW.

Boof looks set to make another good score against Tasmania.

He's having a great season. He'd go alright at #6 if the Australian selectors ditch the all-rounder policy.

Martyn is but Lehmann isn't.

Lehmann would hardly have had any period of time over the last 15 years where he was in the best 7 batsmen in the country.

And as for now?... well he's even lower.

Can everyone here who keeps suggesting Lehman should be in the Aust XI please take note that: YES, most of us agree... but Lehman CHOSE to stand down from his position to allow younger players to gain experience.

His 140000 runs this season alone would strongly disagree :)

The current 7 in the Test Team are ahead of him, so thread over already.

Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Hodge
Hussey
Gilchrist
Symonds

Add to that the following five:

Clarke
Martyn
Katich
Jaques
Cosgrove

Which would leave Lehmann in 13th spot at best.
