Who said he was? But he has shown more in most of those areas. Both flawed options and neither will be playing. They went with the guy who is more flexible in where he can bat and with age on his side.
To suggest the only reason Bancroft could be getting left out is because of his comments is a bit much.

This isn't about a WA 'chip', given the decision is to squeeze Green in. It's an insulting decision with regards to the position of opener and Shield form. CA should really be forced to explain the decision and not talk out the sides of their mouths for once. A century in a one-off game doesn't put Renshaw ahead of Bancroft's two years of 50-plus averages (and a half century in the same game).

Seen a fair bit of sooking by some in the media that guys we've already tried at Test level who have poor averages and not standout Shield stats have been overlooked.
Like yeah it's so devastating they didn't pick Marcus Harris, who averaged 25 from 14 Tests and can't quite hit a 40 average in FC cricket after a decade

Smith averaged 42 in 2023. More than Travis Head who everyone said had an outstanding year.
At that rate he'd have to play another 165 innings for his career average to drop to 50.

Green is clearly a better cricketer than Bancroft.
People can sook about Renshaw being 13th man ahead of Bancroft, but do people actually want him to be 13th man anyway?

Bancroft is not clearly so good that you have to pick him. He form has been good but he has not been transcendent and was pretty disappointing in county.
Green a better player and a better 1st class and test record.
Who gives a shit about who is the reserve player. Bancroft probably better off playing shield and continuing to make runs given Usman only probably has a year or so left.

Either pick the best replacement (bancroft), or the best guy not playing BBL( Harris).

Why is Bancroft better than Renshaw when Renshaw has a better first class average over the last year? And has performed better for the Australian 2nd team?
I know Harris and Bancroft (both wrong side of thirty) have been overlooked and Renshaw at 27 is currently next cab off the rank but (for those more ardent Shield watchers) who is leading the way among the next generation of opening batters. It seems like guys such as Henry Hunt and Bryce Street have shown a bit a season or two ago but have now fallen away. Is anyone else of that vintage pushing up and a chance for consideration if Khawaja retires in 18 months?
Harris isn't the best guy of anything and has had way too many chances already.

Nathan Lyon isn’t Australia’s fourth best bowler. But he is Australia’s best spinner, so we pick him because it’s a specialist position of need. I would argue opener is another specialist positions.

I don’t have to because it’s an incorrect statement across a number of levels. Being unable to generally compete with Australia doesn’t make a team a minnow. There are other teams in world cricket.
They are sitting 8th in the ICC Test Rankings.. with only the minnows of all minnows below them.
You wanna talk other other formats they are fresh off not qualiying for the ODI World Cup.. disgraceful
