As a player where does Cuz sit?

The wider football community really started to recognise him 2004-6, but played just as good footy from 2001. Very very consistent.

That is massive wraps!

Excuse my Judd-love here; but will he be remembered as a better player than Judd?

Will he be remembered as better? Probably not.

The Victorian media loved Judd - most Victorians seem to claim him as one of there own when he was at the Eagles (that changed when he went to Carlton).

But having the privilege of watching them play side by side every week, I'd would take Cuz any day.

He won't be, but he should be.
He is the most complete midfielder I have ever seen could do everything.
Judd imo has limitations with the defensive side of his game and the doesn't have the ability to play forward as well as Cousins could.

Top 50 & 100 lists are too subjective, but he'd be in my top 50.
Problem is he played for WC.
If had played for Coll, Carl or Ess he'd be easily mentioned in the same sentence as Hird, Voss, Buckley etc..

Like you said, e of the greatest midfielders of the modern era.

Right next to Hird, Buckley, Riccuto, Voss, Black & Aker as one of the best midfielders over the past 15 years.

This and I also agree with the notion that he probably won't be, but should be remembered as a better player then Judd.

Would sit somewhere around 7-10 in players of the modern era. Could single handedly turn a game on its head with the best of them.

I think there is some underrating of Judd in here. Saying Judd is miles behind Cousins is ridiculous. Hes been every bit as consistent, dominant and important than Cousins was to the same stage of their career.

He was one of the best in the Comp at WC! #1 ? I would have Voss before him.

Champion. But below Buckley, Hird and Voss. Of the mids presently running around, I'd have Judd and Ablett ahead of him too.

^ This..very good player at the Eagles with Judd and kerr getting the ball out to him....shadow of his former self whilst at the Tigers.

Judd will be remembered as the better player at the end of his career considering he is right now a better player, and possibly has 5 years of footy left in him.

Cousins was a very good player ..but supporters get a tad carried away when one of their long time players retire...they suddenly get better and better.

Judd gets a bad wrap from bitter opposition supporters simply because he plays for Carlton ..see some of the bitter pies supportrs ignorant posts.

Makes me a bit sad that his wonderful career is over. Back in his West Coast days he was the one player I absolutely adored, I wanted him at the Tigers so very very badly.

When the day came that we picked him up no one could wipe the big fat smile off my face. He didn't disappoint the Tiger fans either once he arrived at Punt Rd, every contest he could be in, he was in. Every bit of advice he could give, he gave.

The man is a Legend. Easily in the top 50 in the last 20 years, if not in the top 25. :thumbsu:

Judd doesnt have the leadership or inspiration that Cousins does. That's what puts Cousins ahead.

3rd best player Ive seen behind Gary Ablett Snr and Wayne Carey.

His comeback was a success, and the fact he was banned for a year for 'bringing the game into disrepute'(which is a bullshit charge) is almost forgotten.

Congrats to Ben and the RFC. Both Ben, the RFC and the football public were enriched for the comeback.

You forget that Cuz was doing the hard yards and starring long before Kerr and Judd ever played a game of AFL footy. That's like taking the credit away from Judd at Carlton because he had Murphy, Gibbs to feed him the ball, depsite them having played less than a handful of seasons each.

The simple truth of the matter isn't that Cousins is becoming better and better in people's memories, it's that people are forgetting how good he was over a long stretch of time and are instead remembering his solid, if unspectacular form in his twilight.

I loved Judd when he was at the Eagles and still greatly respect his ability, but in terms of a sustained level of excellence over his career, he would actually rate BEHIND Cuz to date. He has maybe the next 5 years of his career to change this which I believe he may do, provided his body holds up. His injury problems (shoulders as a junior and groins for the past few years) came along earlier in his career than Cousins' hamstring injuries did and this may play a factor in how they are remembered and how they stack up at the end of their careers.

To finish, for over a decade, until he was deregistered, Cousins wasn't, as you put it "a very good player", he was a great player, every bit as feared by oppositions and able to change the course of a game as your Judds, Buckleys, Vosses and Hirds.

I think that's a rather ignorant assumption.

Another interesting opinion. He was probably fortunate it was the AFL who were out to get him rather than Federal police.

Seven top 10 Brownlow finishes speaks volumes of his career. Very unlucky not to have won 2 or 3. I remember the year Buckley, Riccutio and Goodes won he finished one vote behind and there were games he should have polled. Comparisons are difficult. He was a great midfielder and a underrated small forward in his early years. Hird, Buckley, Voss were different type players.

Ben Cousins was the architype modern day midfielder. An absolute superstar. Could run all day, was a great user of the ball and a great leader. Will definitely have some Carey / Ablett-esque probelms getting into the Hall of Fame though.

There is also no doubt Chris Judd wouldn't be as good as he was and is without the influence of Ben Cousins.

Was a combination of Shane Crawford and Robert Harvey and better than both.

And Cousins was born in Geelong. Shame we never got him as a f/s.

Wouldn't everyone be bleeding considering the bleating that goes on about Ablett and Scarlett.

For the first point, it's not particularly ignorant. EVERYONE knew that at West Coast, the team looked to Cuz rather than Judd, even when Judd was made captain after Cuz screwed up. That was a PR exercise. Judd didn't even want to be captain.

Judd has also publicly admitted that footy is pretty much just a job to him. Yes, he's good at his job, but that's hardly as inspiring as the heart with which players such as cousins played. There are reasons why sometimes teams choose lesse players to be their captains. Leadership isn't reliant on skill.

On the second point, the Federal Police were definitely after Cuz. They screwed up their prosecution and he was lucky to escape without a conviction.
