Ashes 2015 - 5th Test - The Oval, Day 4

Siddle does bowl well in England. He gets that little bit of assistance from the pitch that is required. In Australia because he has lost a yard of pace he seems to be largely pedestrian though. I am glad Siddle is doing well despite my overall opinion of his bowling.

Last night was why I've been screaming for Siddle from the moment I saw the Edgbaston pitch before the teams were put in. Had he been in we might of been a bit more competitive in the last two test matches rather than watching Hazelwood struggle.

So for those who said Siddle shouldn't play and there are a lot of them here, shove that up your arse, he's more value on pitches like these than Mitchell Johnson.

Siddle was good last night, but putting him in the side wouldn't have made a difference. Bowling out England cheaply hasn't been our problem. The only English batsman to average more than 30 this series is Joe Root.

We've had six opening partnerships of 50+, whereas England's best first wicket stand is 32. That we lost this series before the fifth Test has everything to do with our middle order and nothing to do with our bowling.

Hmmmn Siddle. For someone that has copped such an ungodly amount of shit on here he seems to go alright and suited to these conditions.
Bump. This post needs repeating.

Paging Lpno1...

Must agree, Warne and McGrath would've struggled to win us a match when they only have 60 to defend. In hindsight Siddle should've been picked though, but we still would've lost.

Siddle bowled well last night but those saying that if he'd played earlier we could've won the series, I don't think so. Making less then 200 with the bat in the first inninings will lose to the game and Siddle did himself no favours by not getting any results for himself in 4 tour games do you can't completely blame the selectors.

While he's bowled well here his pace has been well down so it'll be the same old story when he bowls in Austalia. I think most people thought he'd do a job on the seaming wickets here but given its the only place he's going to bowl well, a dead rubber wasn't the time to do it and we'll need to move on from him after this tour anyway.

The thing about Siddle is though it's not just about him and the wickets he takes at his end. Because he is quite frugal with how many runs he gives away he lets the likes of Johnson let rip and bowl as quick as he can at the other end.

So he himself might not be taking 5fers but he is helping the whole bowling unit as a whole (people tend to forget that bowling is done in partnerships not just a one man show).

Yes, in his prime as a bowler that's what he was doing. He was always going to be decent in England but people already seemed to have thrown Hazlewood out the door and are lining up for Siddle at the Gabba after one good spell. Short memories at play as he'll be pedestrian on Australian pitches due to his drop in pace.

Not me I think it should be Siddle, Hazlewood and Johnson. Starc for me is just too wayward to be in the same side as Johnson.

Should have had Siddle in the team a lot earlier, could have been the difference maker and Australia could be the team that won 3 tests in the series.

Let Siddle bowl when the batsmen get bowled out for 130 and 60.

Malcolm Marshall would have struggled to win those tests

I think it's nearly time to move on from Johnson. He'll play the summer based on past performance but it will probably be the end of the road for him. I think Hazlewood, Pattinson (fully fit obviously), Starc could be our new look attack but it probably won't happen anytime soon.

Agree don't think it would've made that much of a difference, but would of made life a lot more difficult for England and then would've lost by much less.

Overnight Siddle became a world beater again. He is still the bloke who average 53 with the ball last year. That said I think he is an ideal bowler in English conditions and would have probably helped us a bit more than Hazlewood did. Gee I can't believe how disappointing he was.

Mitch Marsh has been one of the best bowlers, if not the best, in the tour games. He's been underused. He needs to be more used like Stokes and treated as a fourth front-liner.

Edit: If they are planning on playing him. He's only bowled 26 overs in the series so far, that's in 3 matches. It's clear that bowling is his strength at the present time.

Hopefully he proves the point in county cricket next year

Watching Sky during the Trent Bridge match, the commentators talked a bit about Marsh being dropped as they couldn't understand it. They all think he's got a bit about him with the ball.

I'll be surprised if he doesn't get picked up by a county team. Probably as a batting at 8 bowler.
