Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

terry alderman i have to say is one of my favourite commentators on the ABC.

They are normally so reserved with their critisism of tactics/selections. He lets rip.

but id change Symonds for Krejza. Unfortunately Hughes will get all sentimental and choose Siddle at the MCG to give the crowd someone to cheer for.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

I would go with:

Hayden
Katich
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Watson
Haddin
Krejza
Lee
Johnson
Hilfenhaus

No point having Symonds in as an "all-rounder" when Ponting doesn't even bowl him.

No doubt Siddle must go - have not seen a more un-threatening looking bowler in the Aus XI for a long time.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

I should say that Alderman was basing that partly on comments from Ponting that indicated that the batting lineup wouldn't change but that the bowlers were going to get shaken up.

Personally I think they should be looking strongly at both Hayden and Symonds. Hayden obviously because he couldn't get a run in a pair of cheap stockings at the moment, Symonds more because he's not bowling and if he's not there as an allrounder then there's better batsmen around.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

Well, how about we just keep picking him because he actually made runs?

Have a quick look at this table, mate:

http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/TopTen.asp

You want to drop a player who has the second-best Test average in the world over the past two years.
I'm more concerned about how we are going to take 20 wickets against the strong SA batting lineup.

Can't rely solely on Mitchell Johnson like we did in this test.

Symonds probably did make enough runs this test to keep his spot, I'll give you that.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

I would like to see this:

Hayden
Katich
Punter
M Hussey
D Hussey
Clarke
Haddin
Noffke
Lee
Johnson
Bollinger

Won't happen though...

Well, how about we take a look at our bowling attack, rather than dropping our #6 who has made runs - both in this Test and over the past two years - but barely bowled?

Are we England? I remember when they lost to New Zealand on the back of a shocking batting performance, and they responded by dropping Matthew Hoggard.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

Hayden
Katich
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Symonds
Haddin
Watson
Lee
Johnson
Krejza

Siddle (12th)

Play Watson as the third seamer.

Personally, I don't mind Siddle, but Watson deserves another crack.

The batsmen are hardly without blame in today's loss, Gunnar. They had a road to bat on, as Smith and De Villiers showed, and far too many of them gave their wickets away wih terrible shots.

Point taken. But having a guy at #6 who can bat, AND has the added bonus of being a genuine wicket taking bowler, is something the selectors would have to consider.

If there is one player i would like to bring back is Phil Jacques does anyone know were the hell he disappered to????

No - the batsmen aren't blameless.

But the post I was responding to highlighted our inability to take 20 wickets. In light of that, dropping Symonds wouldn't make much sense.

They've considered Watson plenty, but eventually went with Symonds because he's demonstrated an ability to make runs at Test level.

Symonds won't be dropped for Melbourne.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

Sorry - but do you have a reason for wanting Symonds dropped?

http://www.howstat.com/cricket/Statistics/TopTen.asp

Its more to the reason that Watson is really necessary in the side
Look at Kallis (nothing special as a bowler) and his useful performance in this match with the ball.

If Symonds isn't bowling when he is supposedly in the team as an allrounder then it is inevitable that his spot will come under question. His brain fades after making good starts aren't helping him either as when Australia lose, its the batsmen who stuff up good starts that get the blame (think Damien Martyn)

I would say that Symonds is a better bat then Watson but the question stands, is the difference in batting enough to offset Watson's superior bowling?

Out for the season with a back injury. Went home from India and was replaced by Marsh IIRC.

Unless you're talking about dropping him and playing a true allrounder to give you five frontline bowlers...

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

Hayden doesnt deserve to be in the side due to his form. Siddle shouldnt have been brought into the side and Symonds plays every game like its a one day game, watson adds more value. The problem with australia is they are to old.

I heard he fell into a weird cosmic abyss, like Ozzie Smith in that episode of The Simpsons where Mr Burns buys a bunch of Major League baseball stars for the plant softball team.

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

This is my Test XI for Boxing Day:

Simon Katich
Phillip Hughes
Punter (CAPT)
Michael Hussey
Michael Clarke
Andrew Symonds
Brad Haddin
Mitchell Johnson
Brett Lee
Jason Krezja
Peter Siddle

Clarke and Symonds threw their wickets away at crucial stages in the 1st and 2nd innings. I would give Symonds another chance.

Punter got a bit too cocky in the 2nd innings. He did not show enough respect for Paul Harris.

I would not change the pace attack at all.

Siddle bowled really well without any luck.

I think Brett Lee is past his prime. He needs to adjust to the times and bowl with the smarts of DK Lillee and Malcolm Marshall. He has to reinvent himself. He cannot bowl in excess of 150 kms per hour til his 35.

back injury
still recovering from surgery I believe

Both Rogers and Hughes are in good form. I would like to see Rogers open in the next test, with Hughes as reserve bat in our tours of SAF and England

Symonds has made enough runs to justify his spot as a batsman alone.

Would you suggest we drop Clarke to accommodate Watson?

Of course not.

Well, why should we drop Symonds, who has the second-best Test average in the world over the past two years?

You would play Krezja?

Johnson was the only bowler from either side that was anywhere near 150 km

Re: Australian XII for the Boxing Day Test

Terry Alderman had the following:
Hayden
Katich
Ponting
Hussey
Clarke
Symonds
Haddin
Watson
Lee
Johnson
Bollinger
Krejza (12th)

If the pitch isn't going to spin, I'd probably agree with him.

Don't really disagree with that 12. Wouldn't be surprised to see Bracken instead of Bollinger though.

I wish we had a "nothing bowler" who had 250 Test wickets and averaged 55 with the bat.
