Because the current destination stinks for us dogs supporters. Hoping another club swooping in at the last minute would be great in getting a good deal out of Smith.

Smith is Out of Contract, if he says he wants to go to one specific place, he's going to that one specific place.
It's 2024, player empowerment means he gets the choice.

Doggies can try and trade him wherever they like, Smith has to accept whatever trade Bulldogs try to do with him.
If he says no then the deal doesn't happen. This isn't the US Sports Leagues where you can flick someone across the Country with no say in where they go. Australian Work Laws are way too strict for that.

Best move for Doggies is getting as much as they can for him. Letting him walk for nothing serves no benefit.
Get back into the Draft this year and go from there.

Are there any concerns with him coming off a significant knee injury?

His game is built on hard running and pace - lose a small % of that and his main weapon is gone.

I assume clubs do some sort of due diligence on this?
There's no concerns about workrate with Bailey. He's just naturally a hard trainer and a 'gut runner' in games. As a HF pushing until the midfield he'd regularly be at the top of our KMs covered stats. That won't change, it's instinctive.

I don't think there will be issues with straight line speed either. It's the change of direction/agility stuff that can take a while to come back even after he's been cleared to play. Given it will be over 15 months from ACL to playing he'll be fine.

But there is a fundamental difference between being out of contract and free agency. Every party to the table has agreed that free agency only takes place after 8 years of service to the club that drafted you. If what you were saying was true, and that the club drafting a player didn't have any additional value out of drafting a player before they hit free agency, they simply would have made a player free agency eligible after 6 years. They didn't.

Dogs will want to keep 44 for either O’Halloran or Peatling.

No announcement still. Have the AFL "cottoned on" to something?
If they have it'd be the Dogs getting punished as so far they'd be the only club that could have benefitted from a 3rd party deal

Your obsession with Geelong....is weird.

I noticed you reacted to a post in some random Cats thread recently. Rent free hey.

Smith will get to Geelong. He was always coming...

Your boys are on the way up, let go of anything Cats related.

Couldn't give a rats about Geelong mate.

But am interested if there's any cap rorting being done here. As would most be.

Yeah I don't get why some nuffie Dogs fans are trying to push that line. Any Cotton On dodgyness on Smith's end would be 100% their problem.
How are you both not understanding the situation?

Cats offer Smith a contract for $700k. in parallel, Cotton On, who is one of Geelong's major sponsors, offer to increase Smith's sponsorship deal by $100-200k if he joins the Cats, on the basis that he will do a couple more insta shoots of him wondering around Geelong.

After courting him for over 12 months too. Either it’s denial or genuine inability to comprehend the situation.

But if those insta photoshoots were done wearing Cotton On undies, how could the AFL prove any kind of shenanigans and not just honest pay for honest work? We've snookered everyone. Again.

it's amazing that some rando posting on an internet forum already knows this info and the yet it's managed to slip by the AFL integrity unit

I really hope they don't read this thread and find out about the dodgy cotton on deals, house and land packages and costa mafia dollars Geelong is definitely benefiting from and no other AFL team is ever doing

Cats Level Heads be coming a little nervous about the club getting sprung re their t-shirt list management.

Deflect, deny and squeal 'conspiracy' when it happens.

Stephen Dank to head the investigation task force?
