I do believe that is what I said, yes.

They came out here in 1907, in a cargo hold of a large ship bound for Melbourne that took off from what was then Danzig, Germany; Poland as an independent country didn't exist then. But they were definitely ethnic Poles.
My German part of the family came out in the 1800s... from Riga in what was then Prussia.

Reported by AFL Trade Whispers, Paige Whatshername, Brian Speaking and Red Sash. All super reliable types.

Now Latvia.

I can only conclude that my great great grandparents and great grandmother must have been on the good stuff to survive that long a voyage in a ship cargo hold. Pretty brutal conditions you'd imagine.

The only thing that could make that better would be if he went full rat and had an Alan Didak-style mouthguard.
Didak used a mouth guard? I just thought he took his false teeth out.

Yup... the oldest part of my family came out from Ireland during the potato famine, they would have been in the cargo hold as well!

It's a fair point. He probably had to remove his own teeth with pliers as part of some initiation ceremony to prove himself when he was hanging around with those underworld types.

He just punched himself in the mouth until they fell out... I doubt he would know how to use a pair of pliers :D

Yes you should have. Shame on you.

He missed. He's not the 1st and won't be the last.

That reaction is very much like me when I know I have no chance of doing something, I am absolutely shitting myself and wish the ground would open up and swallow me!

My theory is that maybe Smiffy just had particularly bad gas.

He has a 'Smart-arse' personality; & he was duly punished by not giving the opposition, the game & the circumstance, the respect, focus & concentration that was warranted.

'Comeuppance' comes to mind.

Anyways it's history now....The boy will go down in the Hawk annuls, as the reason for blowing an opportunity, that comes but once in a millennium....A fitting legacy indeed.

If only Buckenara had the ball in his hands.

I know this isn't the thread for any serious discussion, but the talk about Issac Smith over the last week has been unfair.

I'm happy the Hawks are out, and I'm not fussed either way about their players. But Smith's miss has nothing to do with Hawthorn's quest for a "fourpeat" coming to an end. Two reasons...

1. There are literally hundreds of actions in a game of footy that help determine the outcome. We focus on the after the siren kick, but the reality is, so much has already happened to determine the outcome. Easier shots at goal were missed during the game, harder shots were successful. Simple skill errors, moments of brilliance. Is it really Smith's fault that the Hawks let go a three goal lead just before 3/4 time, when they had all the play? Or is that a team thing? It's also quite possible, Smith's efforts during the game are part of the reason the Hawks were still within a kick at the end and not down by 3 or 4 goals...

2. The miss did not end Hawthorn's season, they had another game to play. An entire game to make up for the Geelong loss and go to a prelim. They did it last year. However, they failed on this occasion. As a team, they didn't get it done. That's not Smith's fault.

Maybe it's the coach in me, but I really feel for players who cop this stuff in these situations.
It's akin to blaming Ronald McDonald when you get a bad Quarter Pounder...

Could not agree more Coach....that would be Mayor McCheese's fault!

The make-up of our squad combined with our over-reliance on our vets, including the absence of Rough, meant that game was a Must-Win.....We all knew that.

The boy allowed himself to be distracted by the opposition while resting over the most important kick of our season....Thereupon losing focus & not going back for his usual run-up & goal-kicking routine....He punched the kick & it was lucky to make the distance from 35 out, dead in front.

The boy deserves every bit of the castigation that comes his way.

He was actually "distracted" by Mitchell, not the opposition. It was Sam that spoke to him when he was going back for the kick. Mitchell told him to "enjoy the moment". Maybe it's his fault...

Anyway, I guess we see this situation differently.
