OK lets play this slowly

Why does a player extend until they get to free agency - So they can get a bigger contract or Leave to get a flag
If Ben wanted a bigger contract he could already get $1 mil a year from North as they have probably $6/7 mil they need to pay out due to only paying min last 3 years and delisting so many players and replaced by cheaper kids.

Or If he wants to win a flag that would mean he is leaving in 2 years time as North wont get there in his time

I’d say we are paying out the bigger contracts for the next two years so that North can open up the book for him in 2024. I’m not too concerned and a lot of supporters will know that he will re-sign with the roos after this extension has expired but, to say he’s worth 1 million now after 26 games would be seen as more of an embarrassment than it would be quote on quote a great result for the North Melbourne Football Club. Because it reeks too much of desperation. It’s not smart Football business.

Tarrant in 2015 was rumoured to be out the door and going to Hawthorn for $700,000 for 5 years only to re-sign with North for 4 years on only around $450,000-$500,000.

I reckon when Ben’s deal comes up in two years time, he will accept anything from $600,000-$750,000 from anywhere between 4-6 years.

This is actually terrible

North clearly would have wanted a 5-7 year deal and locked him away and also whilst they have the salary cap space that could probably pay out the entire 7 years just in his 1st year and front end the f out of that allowing future cap relief.

Clearly Ben didnt have the confidence in north to sign longer and is giving them 2 years to see if he wants to stay or go without any problems.

Seems unnecessarily negative to label a 2 year extension as “terrible”

Certainly not brilliant is it ? Its actually perfect for Ben as he gives north 2 years to show or his gone

Thoroughly agree re Bens reasoning and don’t begrudge him that. But again, there is a lot of space between “terrible” and “not brilliant”.

Terrible is Ben not seeing a future and leaving to go to another club.

OK lets make this simple for you

Balta 21 years old (just) and doesnt become a free agent when its up
Ben is 23 years old and can walk out the door in 2 years

Hope that helps
Terrible business by Richmond, it's gonna look even worse when Balta walks to North via the PSD in 2 years. Should've gone for 4 to at least guarantee FA compensation when he jumps off the sinking ship.

Nobody walks to North

Richmond dont lose players we want to keep
The fact that you didn't realise my post was taking the p*** just shows how clueless you are.

As for Ben's contract, 2 years makes the most sense for both the player and club. At the moment he has had 18 months of good form, not quite enough to lock in that huge money contract.

If he doesn't continue improving, North aren't committing massive money to him long term and can re-sign him on similar terms. If he does continue getting better, Ben can come back in 2 years (potentially with an AA selection under his belt) and have a stronger hand to negotiate a huge paycheck from the club.

Your opinion that it reflects on Ben's opinion of North is just plain wrong. If he had any doubts on the direction of the club, why would he even sign for 2 years when he can just leave now?

Yes i is bad

He is KPD that took 4 years to develop and get games and has now shown he is an AFL quality KPD thats over 2 mtrs tall and will have 200 game career
I have no doubt the North list management were trying to get him signed longer.

To think after 5 years they would be happy to just see him sign 2 years

Somewhere out there in an alternate reality where we signed him for seven years you're in this thread having a crack at us for that instead. Give it a rest mate

Nice of you to have an input but a 23 year old KPD that has potential to become the best full back in the league signing for 7 year would be a great result for a club like north who can literally payout the entire contract in the 1st year with no other players to front end to this amount.

But i will ask you the exact same question that others have not answered
Do you prefer he signed the 2 years deal or 5 years plus

In another disaster, Will Phillips just extended for 2 years. Just terrible.
Things are going from bad to terrible with Charlie Larzzaro signing on for 2 more years

We just can’t catch a break.

Of those options? Two years - by an enormous margin. This is his sixth year on the list and he offered close to nothing in the first five. Half a good season does not even remotely guarantee that he'll be good for the next seven and a half years to come. We handed out four-year deals like candy to Aaron Black and Mason Wood after they were good for five minutes and that weighed us down for years, if you were in charge they'd still be locked in for a few more to come. Two years means there's security, but not so much as to remove the incentive to keep improving - and that goes for both player and club. Hopefully in 2023 Ben has earned a longer deal & a payraise, and we've earned his ongoing loyalty. Would've been okay with three years, but two is fine.

Ben will most likey be top 5 in your teams B & F

You still dont get the point , In a $13.1 million cap after banking 5% for the last 3 years
most likely North will have unused cap space that gets wasted as their is no other quality to pay $15 mil this years

Yes, it's a really bad move by us to not sign a bloke with 26 career games to his name for the next seven years

lol 7 year contract, absolutely nothing wrong with 2 year contract, wants to see where you're at then, perfectly reasonable.

Any player that has a manager that's previous employment wasn't selling shutters door to door, would tell their player to wait for the big bucks.

I imagine Harry will do the same with Carlton and wait to see where we are in 2 years, perfectly reasonable thing to do, if the Carlton ship explodes and he bails, good luck to him. I'm sure you campaigners will make an attempt though. ;)

Ben could easily get to end of 2 year and re-sign for 4+ if he likes the direction North are heading in.

Would LOVE Harry to sign for 5+ but hardly likely given his potential ceiling and Ben would be the same with his as a KPD.

Not to mention 5+ is a big gamble on a KPD.

Mate I get your point. I'm just not signing a guy with 26 games for seven years because of it.

Where you spending the $15 mil ?

Firstly - it's $13.2m. If we've banked cap space (and that's still an 'if' afaik) and can spend 105%, we're talking at most $13.8m. I have no idea where you're getting $15m from.

Secondly - probably by front-loading the five-year deals we've given to Luke McDonald, Aidan Corr & Jaidyn Stephenson in the last 12 months, all of them far more established players than McKay. He is not the only player on our list we can do that with, believe it or not.

You guys have been front loading McDonald ever since you missed out on Dusty & Kelly - Think he is paid up until 47 years of age
Having a look at the list and players left on it with players like Ziebul/Cinnington/Goldstein/Tarant/ Polec all would be paid up with nothing left to pay and on min contracts from now on.

Now just go through your list and do a quick calculation on which new players will be getting paid overs, North have had a War Chest for 5 years and are yet to spend the bare min. Delisting Tyson,Polec, hall alone would make up the $1.3 mil alone FFS
