Best 22 - 2016

What about macaf in the forward 50.. guaranteed 25 goals.. high pressure.. disciplined.. throw his big frame around. I would seriously love him up there again. He's older and smarter and performed admirably as a kid in 2010 up front.
But who goes out for him? It's a good problem to have.

The best 22?

The best part now is that the players not making the 22 to me is an indication of good depth
PLUS the newbies and young ones ate now putting pressure on the old guard
That is the good news.....
Look at who is getting pushed out, thats so good because you have to earn your spot

Best 22
B. Williams ~ Brown ~ Langdon
HB. Scharenberg ~ Marsh ~ Maynard
C. Sidebottom ~ Trelloar ~ De Goey
HF. Moore ~ Reid ~ Howe
F. Elliot ~ Cloke ~ Crisp
R. Grundy ~ Pendlebury (c) ~ Swan
I. Varcoe ~ Greenwood ~ Adams ~ Aish

E. Witts, Broomhead, Fasolo

Depth this is agood indicator to me:

B. Sinclair ~ Goldsack ~ Toovey
HB. Macaffer ~ Frost ~ Ramsay
C. Oxley ~ Blair ~ Goodyear

would be disappointed if that VFL team didn't give it a shake!

Greenwood is no longer best 22 IMO. He's stressing about it right now.

I'd play Pendlebury, Swan, Adams, Treloar, Sidebottom Crisp, De Goey, Aish and Broomhead before i play him.

Quality back up inside MID now is the way I see it. He'll get games, but not week in week out. Not enough strings to his bow.
Grenwood assuming fit is all but a MUST.
Tough ball getter.
Grunt
His support to pendles treloar swan sidey crisp adams etc is going to make life hell for opposition trams.
Then there is de goey aish wow

So in a way the midfiled is a rotation these days of about 6 or 7 or so players, hence the bench is useful for listing teams.

Grundy, Pendlebury Swan with treloar (centre)
With Sidebottom, Adams, Greenwood, then
De Goey, Aish Crisp
Got to love that

Much much better

DEPTH

My opinion is that Reid must play back next year. I think Brown and Reid are the rocks in our defence and that Frost would take the third tall, if required-horses for courses. Unless Frost improves his disposal and marking I don't see him in the best 22. He may also be behind Marsh who will hopefully continue his improvement.

Nobody who watched us beat Geelong late in the season could possibly say that Greenwood is not in our best 22. He demolished Joel Selwood that night. It was one of the best tagging performances I've seen in recent times and he got plenty of the ball too. He provides some much needed two-way running and physicality to our midfield. I see him playing a very similar role to Jordan Lewis at Hawthorn.

WOW! What a great squad. Some seriously good players struggling to make our best 22, which is exactly what we want to see. We now have the kind of depth needed to go deep into September and, for the first time in years, lots of good ball users. Varcoe to play more as a crumbing forward in 2016. Elliott is pretty good when the ball hits the deck too. Swan, Broomhead, Sidebottom and DeGoey can also rotate through that role.

Having White in my Best 22 is no doubt an unpopular view but I think he is a must. Moore can't be expected to be back up ruckman for the whole season. We need to keep him fresh. White is more than handy as a back-up ruck and in 2016 will be getting the opposition's 3rd or 4th best defender thanks to the development of Moore and arrival of Howe, rather than the 2nd best as he did this year. I'm tipping that he'll have his best ever season next year and will kick more than 30 goals.

Reid fully going and fit is an AA level CHB, but having a key big body who can mark etc and cause headaches for opposition defences lends him to be the support to Cloke. Thats why he is forward to mind at our best.
We have a great depth of back types, Reid can support Cloke toll Moore fills out and matures to take over the forward area. In the mean time Moore runs around and with elliot and howe causes further grief.
Thats the theory anyway

Love to get Fasolo in but for who? maybe Aish early days, its going be a very good 22, no excuses this year.

You and I have named the same best 22 players, just in slightly different positioning. Agree with you about Fasolo.

Pretty close to mine as well. Only change I would make is I'd like three talls down back so Maynard would be the unlucky out for Marsh.

I would have couple of players changed. Maybe we can fit all 3 of Howe, Fas and Elliott in but to me that's uncertain. Howe would seem the least accomplished of the 3 and statistically is he poorest. He has to come and earn a spot in the 22.

Likewise Scharenberg who is one of many chasing a spot on the HBF. He looked to have made a bit of a statement in the last VFL final which was very encouraging. He still doesnt have much AFL form to speak of yet and Langdon, Maynard and Marsh are ahead of him in that respect. He needs to make a statement in the main team early next year to be in my best 22

Aish could be regarded similarly but his 2014 AFL form shows he has the tools to make it as an AFL player and I expect him to be best 22. Broomhead is the other youngster with promise who will have to deliver in 2016 to break into the side when we are at full strength. He has the toughest job of any I have mentioned in this post and I suspect if we have a good injury run he will have a lot of VFL footy to play.

Frost is a player I think will surprise a few next year. As a young KPB still on 44 career games he has been thrown to the wolves a bit in his 1st 2 seasons. He has had to learn the job while often playing against the best forwards in the comp. We always talk about players needing 50 games to feel comfortable at the level and begin to shine. He was never given the chance to ease in . I think that should be considered when people worry about his lack of attacking capability so far.

He has speed, good size, great closing and good athleticism. As his experience grows I think you will see his game expand and he will add to his performance. I am hoping he will hold down CHB this year and release Reid forward where Cloke, Reidand Moore could provide real opposition concerns.

FB: Marsh-Brown- Williams
HB: Langdon- Reid- Sharenberg
C: Crisp-Adams-Varcoe
HF: Sidebottom-Cloke- Swan
FF: Elliott- Moore - Howe
RR: Grundy-Pendlebury-Treloar

Bench: DeGoey, Greenwood, Aish, Maynard

Depth:
Forwards: Broomhead, Fasolo, White
Mids: Witts, Caff, Blair, Goodyear
Defence: Tooves, Ramsay, Goldsack, Sinclair, Oxley, Frost

Really nice 22, nice balance, lots of talent with room to grow. The depth is decent without being great. 5-8 looking likely, won't rule out top 4 as there is no need to place a ceiling on them.
I've gone with the extra defender in Maynard over the extra froward in Broomhead based on what our coaching staff has opted for in the past. Our backline has a lot of depth so Maynard, Marsh and Scharenberg will be pushed to keep their spots all year.

Top4 should be the goal. That's aiming high but not absurdly high IMO. We have the cattle, aiming for 8th isn't very inspiring. Missing the finals just can't be accepted next year. Heads must roll in that event.

Agree about Frost being the weak link. To his credit, the man is as reliable to get a fist in as Sam Gilbert at a year 10 formal, but really hurts us with his disposal. We can only really let one backman do that and that will forever be Browny. Hopefully we persevere with Marsh as the third tall.

The side I would like to see probably has about 5 different names that will likely line up.

B: M.Williams - N.Brown - J.Marsh
HB: T.Langdon - B.Reid - M.Scharenberg
C: T.Varcoe - T.Adams - S.Sidebottom
HF: D.Swan - T.Cloke - J.Howe
F: J.Elliott - D.Moore - A.Fasolo
R: B.Grundy - A.Treloar - S.Pendlebury
INT- J.Crisp - J.Aish - L.Greenwood - J.De Goey

I'm a big fan of Bruzzy Maynard but I couldnt squeeze him in.

Would be happy to see Maynard, Broomhead, Frost or Oxley in at the expense of one of the currently named players.

For us to progress, we need to go with a side like this one. However I can imagine that guys like Toovey, Sinclair, Blair, Witts, Macaffer, Goldsack and White will be getting games at various stages which I feel will just hold us back.
