Best 22 for 2014

Toovey, Keefe, Reid
Young, Brown, Williams

Seedsman, Pendlebury, Beams

O'Brien, Cloke, Steele
Elliott, White, Fasolo

Foll: Grundy, Swan, Ball
Int: Lynch, Adams, J Thomas, Martin/Macaffer

Macaffer to be picked in games where we need a tagger and Martin otherwise. I have picked Martin over Dwyer and Blair because he presents as an inside/outside mid who regularly kicks multiple goals. Players like that are weapons and are hard to come by. Dwyer showed a lot this year but to me he is up against Thomas for a spot, who in my opinion performed as well but has a higher ceiling.

I haven't picked Sinclair because with Marley and Toovey in the backline who in my view are better than him, we need a long kicking/running small backman. We would never clear our defensive fifty arc with all three of them back there and despite all his endeavour (which I admire), he simply isn't good enough to make the team in any other position. If Marley or Toovey gets injured, the spot would be his until someone else claimed it.

In reality one or two of Kennedy, Broomhead, Oxley, Ramsey, pick 6 and pick 10 will probably cement a spot. It just depends on who takes the next step. Frost should play if Lynch or White doesn't work out and/or Reid goes forward.

Facepalm @ anyone who doesn't think Williams is best 22

Josh Thomas as well.

And can't understand why people have Fasolo, Young, and Karnezis ahead of others. Yes they could force their way into the best 22 with a fantastic preseason but they're coming from a long way back relative to others who earned their stripes throughout 2013. Adams I can understand, he had a pretty good 2013, but not these others.

Depth is important but winning games still relies on how good your best 22 is.

The Pies depth going into next year is quite good. The majority of those players have plenty of AFL experience behind them and should there be an injury or two, those players could step up and fill a role in the side. There are a number of players there who are on the cusp of being in your best 22 like Seedsman, Kennedy and Martin.

Emerging Players:

Marley Williams - Had a breakout season in 2013 playing on the oppositions best small forwards and often doing a great job. Rarely played a bad game this year and is expected to have another great year in 2014. His run and carry off half back will be important for Collingwood.

Josh Thomas - Finally after five seasons without a senior game Josh Thomas broke threw and made his AFL debut in 2013 playing 19 games, averaging 19 disposals, 3 marks and kicking 11 goals as that half forward/midfielder. At 22 he is going to be even better next year and looks to be one of Collingwood emerging young players who will benefit with more game time.

Brodie Grundy - Rarely has there been a young ruck man who's come on and made an immediate impact. Usually ruck mans take a longtime to develop, but there's just something about Grundy that has the makings of an A grade ruck. From his debut game he was impressive and you sensed that he was going to be something special. He will again improve next year and we might just be witnessing one of the best young rucks emerge into a great player.

All the best in 2014. :thumbsu:

Always interesting to see your team from an opposition supporters view so thanks, and it does look like we are in good shape especially when you add pick 6 & 10 to the equation in players who could potentially debut and be best 22.

Interesting to see White not make it. A lot think he's a walk up by like you I don't know who would drop out. If Karnezis can reach his potential then more problems at selection.

All this fringe 22 barring Sinclair, Clarke and Hudson can certainly force a number of players out of the team so it's a good problem to have.

Strong fringe list also means we position ourselves well for future trades and FA acquisitions.

Why Sinclair? Did u not watch his second half of the season in defence?
Might be a little harsh but needs to show more for me!

I just think that the current depth and playing list we have shows more promise and looking at who we could get with 2 first rounders makes me think he needs to show considerable development.
