Best 22 for the start of 2017?

Care to elaborate on the following Wolf tone?

Jones will play HB but will also tag in the mids when needed. Apparently there is one player he is keen to even the score with.

Rohan?

First post back for the new season. Was going to wait until after New Year but reading all of these posts got me excited about 2017 and beyond. We are in a very good place, ladies and gentlemen. Geez, we've got some elite players, fantastic depth and great young talent coming through. Can't wait until the first pre season game to see some of these young guys in action. He hasn't been mentioned in this thread, but don't forget we have young Sam Murray that is showing a lot of promise too. Leonardis might get a couple of games this year too.

I agree with you. Murray was a bit slow to get into the groove after coming back from injury, in the first few games his delivery was really sloppy. But as the season wore on he just kept getting better and was one of the best in the finals. his disposal improved no end and he was hitting targets at will.

Sexy Tyrone is freaky. He can do stuff. But I'd like to see him do a bit more stuff. doesn't get enough ball at the moment. Needs to get far more fro a winger. But when he does let go and run, his run and carry is great.

The first GWS game produced some pretty ugly incidents and the GF too. He got lined up in the GF and should have got a free but didn't. In the early GWS game I'm not sure if it was Ward or Devon Smith, but someone punched him fair in the gob from behind and got away with it. I don't think whoever did that will get away with it. As for Doggies, I think all our players are out for blood due to the circumstances of the GF. But I think Clay Smith might just get more flack than most as he was throwing his weight around, boots and all. He got away with a few cheap shots. As you know Jonesie won't do anything silly but the first bump might just be a doozy. Libratore was also getting away with some cheap shots in the clinches. Have a look at the footage and how many times that prick uses the uppercut in the packs.

Thanks for that.

Libbas a dirty little grub.

Starting 22 for this year is a real challenge and there are plenty of "dependses". Who would have picked our starting 22 for 2016 at this stage? Noone! At the risk of displaying terrible ignorance:
FB Smith Grundy Rampe very strong defensively on all types of players.
HB Newman Aliir Jones a more attacking unit than last year smart, speedy and faster.
Ichange Defender Marsh but may be under some pressure. Needs to step up. Laidler and Maibaum in the picture. Melican a dark horse.
C Heeney Kennedy Hanneberry no comment required.
HF Reid Franklin Rohan Incredible marking power between centre square and the 50 plus pace and strength. Great defensive outlet too.
FF Papley Tippett Hayward Hayward is a good mark and can kick goals. Plays mid size rather than small. Hope Paps leg is OK. Rose or BJ if not.
Ichange Forward Lloyd acting as an outside mid/winger. Distributor.
Ruck Naismith Parker KJack lots of rotation through the centre.
Ichange mids Mills Hewett play them where you need them. Will watch Mills' roles with great interest. Hewett and Jones to tag if needed.
Unlucky Robinson McVeigh Laidler
There are others who will see senior footy for sure such as Foote, Talia, Sinclair, Rose.
Talia is too one dimensional to fit into our best defensive unit but could get a run if a KPD is injured.
Hopefully AJ will get some NEAFL games in the last 2 months and a full preseason to attack 2018. Not his year though.
For mine, our list is in pretty good shape considering 2 years of no trading. The coaches did a damn good job last year. I thought we'd finish outside the top 4! This year looks at least as good, especially if we can work out how to beat Dogs, GWS and Hawthorn, who manage to confront us out of games.

Think Tippett will struggle

Might captain the 2s
We're well stocked with replacements though, AA CHF Sam Reid plus Toby Pink, and Callum Sinclair to dominate in the ruck

As much a some say it doesn't matter if we don't win a flag with him cause he has brought people through the gates etc etc blah blah memberships.

Only my opinion but it's a failure if we don't get at least one

We weren't on the bottom of the ladder when we got him , we were right in the mix so we want flags and so did he otherwise he would of went to gws

Pretty good analysis Chris. Towers might just be in the mix with Dawson too. Don't write off Ollie Florent getting a game or two either. He is a super shot for goal and can run, run, run. Very elusive bugger. I think we just added at least 20% more to the depth than we had last year. By the way Melican looked pretty good at training. He's fit this year.

id be pretty surprised if Ollie Florent can play more than a few games this season. He has the speed and game to stay outside a lot, but I don't think he will have the strength at AFL level yet. Will be too weak a tackler to have in pressure matches against bigger bodies. Both the draftees looked pretty small, and I'd be surprised if we used them too much. Just other players in the system that should be a bit ahead of them.

I think all dont look ready except for Edwards.

Straying off topic a bit here but wouldn't it be ironic if GWS ended up winning a flag before us after those comments?

I personally suspected it was more about the deal we offered him, security of 10 years etc. Likewise for the Swans, a good deal financially with the revenue he brings. It was far from an on-field decision IMO.

Hard to say I regret the decision though as I love the big guy. Win one flag and all will be forgiven.

Position of Isaac Heeney in 2017 to commence the year...

My thoughts are if Papley isnt fit for round 1 then I think we need him forward, anyone else think differently? With Mcglynn gone there is only Rose really and that doesnt fill me with much confidence, I think Horse will need him forward to start.

Very open to opposite opinions though as I cant see how the fwd line jigsaw pieces get filled with papley missing round 1, if that eventuates.

Would prefer K. Jack as a small forward and have Heeney in the mids. K.Jack is slowly going out of the the top mids, but forward he has an amazing goal sense and can really impact the game. With our midfield as well, you can rest JK3, Parker, Heeney in the forward line with their marking capabilities.

I am also interested to see Hewett's development and what 2017 has in store for players like Rose/B.Jack/Dawson/Towers or if one of our draftee's can stand up.

You could have Buddy Franklin up forward but it doesn't matter if it doesn't get to him.

So I agree in that Papley and Heeney are important players for us and have in their short careers really improved our forward line, which really its the structures and disposal going forward we need to work on.

As far as other options what about Rohan, Keiran Jack will play off half forward for long spells, as will Hewett, Florent and Hayward are new but could feature early, Dawson has been talked up, Cunningham, Towers and BJack are still in the squad.. Shaun Edwards, or Sam Murray could be given an upgrade and play the role. Zac Jones would have an impact.

Regardless, if Papley does miss some early games its not finals and if he does it gives someone else an opportunity.
