I've been worried about our bottom half dozen players the past few years but we've been saved by fringe players stepping up. I'm not sure this year has the same potential to cover lack of depth in our best 22. Here's how I roughly rate the list and you'll see about 19 ish and WITHOUT INJURIES we run out of AFL standard players needed to take us to a flag. If we have 3-4 players injured then we will have 6-8 very marginal AFL standard players in our team.

If you do a similar exercise on GWS, it's scary how far we are behind. So here's my list, no debate needed on where they are on the list, just that we have 19 who are definitely finals standard -
1. Kennedy
2. Buddy
3. Parker
4. Hanneberry
5. Rampe
6. Grundy
7. Tippett
8. Heeney
9. Mills
10. Aliir
11. Smith
12. K Jack
13. McVeigh
14. Reid
15. Rohan
16. Papley
17. Lloyd
18. Naismith
19. Jones
20. Laidler*
21. Hewett*

We then have unproven players, none of who at this stage really make me think they will be permanent fixtures in the future.
Cunningham
Towers
Robinson
Talia
Foote
Marsh
Newman

I know we have high hopes for this years draftees and O'Riordan but history shows that these players rarely play a part in finals. I am worried if injuries hit.

Fair points and list

The following would be at least reasonable inclusions for certain outs from what we have seen.

Cunningham (Craps himself a bit but can cover a midfield or small forward role)
Towers (Leg Speed cover for say an injured Rohan real wild card of the bunch due to some howler moments)
Robinson (Midfield cover not like for like but would carry some weight)
Marsh (Proven cover as a defender at least worked well during the finals)

Just need a couple to stand up and step up from the rest of the list.

Another aspect is that before last season we probably wouldn't have classified some of those players as being finals standard - Aliir, Naismith, Papley, Mills (massive potential, but still zero games to his name at this stage of 2016). I'm sure we'll be adding a couple more youngsters to this classification over the course of the season.

To add onto this I reckon Papley's final season was pretty good for a young kid. You don't finish first in the home and away when you don't have depth

Glandular Fever, grim, could be missing all year, really grim.

Our list is already short on depth and it's taking a big hit before a game is played in anger. McVeigh, Heeney, Rohan, Aliir (may be avail), Papley. Could start the season with 7-8 of our GF side missing and only replaced with players of doubtful standard or debutants very few of whom are yet to show they deserve a senior game, except for Melican.

A pre season game has never had so much riding on it as Sunday night's encounter with the Saints. Hell we'd want peripheral players to really show they've got something.

Grim, this is looking grim.

B: Smith - Grundy - Rampe
HB: Jones - Aliir - Lloyd
C: Hannebery - Kennedy - Mills
HF: Rohan - Reid - K Jack
F: Tippett - Franklin - Papley
R: Naismith - Parker - Heeney
INT: Hewett - McVeigh - Towers - Laidler

Thinking maybe Cunningham, Florent, Robinson, Edwards and Melican?

Marsh, Newman & Edwards could all fill in as well (especially as McVeigh is injured too
