I agree that it would be a great sign of progress if he is overtaken but really can’t see it this year and if anything he has a few more levels to go on current trajectory that should make this point completely moot.

Regardless of how it’s spun, he’s top 10 bnf and when you take out the blokes who have left he sits comfortably in that zone. Sam loves him and has spoken glowingly of him in the past. On top of that we are going to rolling out a team made up almost half of blokes with less that 20-30 games if you look at most best 22s. There’s just no way you not going to have Morrison who has continued to improve significantly since playing regular seniors footy and actually has a relative stockpile of experience something we are generally lacking in.

I think he’s one of the first ones picked, particularly for round 1 which this thread is about.
Dan Howe came 7th in 2021 b&f then could hardly get a game…

With Amon a lock for one wing, there will be decent competition for the outside roles. With Day, McDonald, Ward all likely to play midfield minutes perfectly possible Morrison gets squeezed out. Possibly not for round 1 but that’s a few months away.

Competition for spots is a good thing - reckon the number of players who are genuine locks is really quite small with a large number of spots dependent on performance and development over preseason.

Brocky has shown a few flashes, but there's no chance he plays round 1. Coming from a long long way back and will need to break down that door at BH before getting a look in.
Yep brocky played like 5 mins of vfl footy for the whole season last year?

Unless he’s absolutely smashing it in preseason going to be starting at BH.

Sam said on the members forum last night that he’s wanting Day to play midfield as he can be more damaging there. He said Will is so good at half back that they know he can go back there at anytime to play is required, but he thinks that the side will profit from Day being in the middle.

And he has been training with the mids and wings, fwiw.
SYL can you please point me in the direction of the members forum you mentioned. Ta

Sam also mentioned that he was in the frame for an AA spot, but at the end of the day he came 13th in votes per game for the BnF (a true indicator) in a team that finished 6th last. Behind a first year player in Ward too. That's also with several senior players playing less games due to having interrupted seasons. It's hardly a ringing endorsement.

Of course Mitchell is going to pump up his players in the media. But that doesn't mean that solid role players that provide good leadership cannot be overtaken by more talented players.

Now we have a fair group of younger players that are pushing for a place in the senior side. So you have to look at the side and see where positions may become available, and unfortunately for Morrison he's one of the first players that you can identify as having a spot that could be up for grabs.

Hardwick
Scrimshaw
Sicily
CJ

Rucks x 2
Amon
Newcombe
Ward
Day

Impey
Moore
Lewis
Breust
Wingard

That's 15 players that would be more crucial to the game plan and more set in the side currently, fitness pending of course.

Then you have to account for the roles of players, like two or three additional KPP's - DGB, Blanck, Kosi, Jeka?

And other players like MacDonald, Nash and Maginess (polled better). MacDonald is most certainly the future and I believe that Maginess is too. All three play roles that Morrison cannot.

What about Bramble, who would be in direct competition for a spot with Morrison? Or where does Worpel and Stephens fit into the side?

We just have too many players that would be more locked in, and too many other players pushing for a spot for Morrison's place not to be in jeopardy this season. Again, that's a good thing for us in the long run.

Ok, just going with a popular choice side...

B B.Hardwick J.Blancke J.Scrimshaw
HB J.Sicily DGB C.Jiath
C W.Day J.Worpel K.Amon
HF C.Wingard M.Lewis D.Moore
F L.Bruest J.Koschitzke L.Meek
FOLL N.Reeves J.Ward J.Newcombe
I/C- C.McDonald, F.Magginess, C.Stephens, J.impey
Sub- C.Morrison

Gets me pretty excited about Box Hill...

O’Hara Frost Weddle
Bramble Jeka S Mitch
Hustwaite Long BMacD
Butler Ramsden O’Sullivan
Brockman Serong Green
Lynch Nash McKenzie
Bennetts VFL VFL VFL VFL

B: Hardwick, Blanck, Grainger-Barras
HB: Scrimshaw, Sicily, Jiath
C: Amon, Ward, Morrison
HF: Moore, Koschitzke, Wingard
F: MacDonald, Lewis, Breust
R: Reeves , Newcombe, Worpel
INT: Stephens, Day, Maginness, Meek
SUB: Weddle

Eager to see if Mackenzie can get in the midfield mix early, I'd say probably but erring on the side of caution.

Bloody hard to figure out at this stage as so much projection on how guys will improve (or not) over preseason. Midfield is tough to work out (other than Jai).

Hardwick Blanck DGB
CJ Sicily Day
Amon Jai McD
Moore Scrim Butler
Breust Lewis Meek
Reeves Stephens Finn
I: Ward Impey Nash Jeka sub: bramble
Jeez, that's a bruising CBA squad.

I wouldn't mind if all of CMac, Stephens and McKenzie played round 1 but unless there are injuries I can't see who they replace.

Trying again, taking into account this is round one and trying to temper expectations of the new draftees.

B: Hardwick Blanck DGB
HB: CJ Sicily Morrison

C: Amon C Mac Day
R: Meek/Lynch Finn Newk

HF: Bruest Scrim Moore
F: Wingard Lewis Reeves

IC: Ward, Nash, Stephens, Impey

I think there is a real battle for those mid spots, with my choice generally going to those with more versatility (such as Nash who has the size and athleticism to play in numerous spots compare to Worps who is essentially a mid only). I am also not sure who to pick out of Lynch and Meek. Lynch was held back by injury last year and if he gets a good pre-season then he is fighting for that spot.

I am hoping that our draftees from last year don't suffer any second year blues and continue the upward trajectory. I have based CMac starting in the centre on the positive training reports (although a long way out from season proper).

The ones unlucky to miss out are this years draftees, Frost (not sure if him or DGB), Morris (was trying to get him in to free up Hardwick), Brockman (mainly based on potential), Worps (see above), Bramble and I could see Green making it in.

Who are the on field leaders that will guide the yoof:

Forward: Bruest, Wingard, Impey?, Moore?, Lewis?
Mid: Amon, Morisson, Worpel?, Ward?? (Looks to have very good football IQ but only 2nd year)
Back: Sis, Hardwick, Scrimshaw?

I reckon with a young team, these could be the first guys picked

While we can all see the benefit of th e players who will be around in 2-3 years hence get as much senior experience in the meantime, the young inexperienced aspect of the team will see this tempered by some rotations in and out of the seniors between rounds and rotation through the centre in games.

Thus the squad will eek out the season in better shape

Brocky is in trouble this season IMO. One year contract, hasn't played in a season, two kids back in WA. Things aren't adding up for us. Hopefully he can work around it though because he's a talented player.
He was out of contract so had every opportunity to ask for (demand) a trade to Perth if he so wanted, but he opted for the one-year deal. There has to be something in that, that he wants/ed to stay.

Just need to get him on the park, is the tough part.

WA sides have been less than enthusiastic in this cases in the past. Maybe kite flying happened

Nash is an emerging onfield leader and Newcombe, for all his inexperience, is not far away.

Round 1: 2022

HB: Jiath Sicily Scrimshaw
C: Amon Worpel Day
HF: Moore Lewis Wingard
F: Breust Meek C. McDonald
R: Reeven Newcombe Ward
I: Impey, Morrison, Stephens, Finn

Last Round 2022 ideally for future progress to get back to finals contention:

B: Hardwick Blanck DGB
HB: Jiath Sicily Scrimshaw
C: Amon Worpel Day
HF: Moore Lewis Wingard
F: Breust Meek C. McDonald
R: Reeves Newcombe Ward
I: Weddle, McKenzie, Stephens, Butler

Hawks: Round 1 2023.

- Interchange: 5

FB: Hardwick Blanckt Frosty - Impey

HB: Scrimshaw Sicily(C) CJ

C: Day Worpel Amon - Nash, Morrison, Maginess

Foll: Meek Newcombe Ward

HF: Wingard Kozi Moore - CMac

FF: Bruest Lewis Reeves

This should get us over the line against the Bombers.

NB: Maginess may start on ground in HHF spot then race in to cover designated target!

Seeing Sicily drop into the hole in front of 2mt Peter and Frosty being his annoying self.

2MP dropped 6 on Frost last year. No way I'm having that match up. Will have to be Blanck. Or even Sic. He's a gun that deserves serious respect.
