Bloody hard to figure out at this stage as so much projection on how guys will improve (or not) over preseason. Midfield is tough to work out (other than Jai).

Hardwick Blanck DGB
CJ Sicily Day
Amon Jai McD
Moore Scrim Butler
Breust Lewis Meek
Reeves Stephens Finn
I: Ward Impey Nash Jeka sub: bramble
Where's Wingard?

Obviously there's gonna be injuries going into round one. And Sam may wait a few games before he adds the new draftees straight away. Games at Box Hill won't do the youngsters any harm in the early stages of the season .
Backline:
Hardwick Barrass Scrimshaw
Jiath Sicily Morrison
Centreline:
Amon Newcombe Ward
Reeves Worpel Day
Frwd line:
Wingard Meek McDonald
Breust Lewis Moore
İnt,chg:
Maginess Impey Bramble Stephens

To break in:
Nash
Kosi
Blanck
McKenzie
Weddle
Morris
Butler
Lynch
Frost
Barrass???

There’s a midfield player who missed one game 2022, is probably fit, and Mitchell omeara departed. Depth in howe Shiels too.

Yet he’s rarely in these starting teams. Would be a massive 180 by the coach for him to be missing
Ditto Morrison and Frost.

We just lost 90+ seasons of AFL experience.

Why we wouldn’t do everything possible to have these 3 guys in the side given they’ll have 11 (Frost), 6 (Morrison) and 5 (Nash) seasons and 280-odd senior games to their name is mystifying.

Maturity & senior experience is more vital to us than every other team in the competition in 2023

I've tried doing a best 22 numerous times and really can't stay on any that I have come up with. Such a great problem to have and hopefully injuries are kind to us this year and competition for spots is at a maximum.

Fox Footy’s take on our best 22.

C: Mackenzie, Ward, Amon

I've seen worse! It's just too hard to pick who is going to play and where. The players we feel are best might not always jive with the coaching unit. For example, I could see the backline shaping up like this instead:

B: Hardwick, Blanck, Morris
HB: Jiath, Sicily, Maginness

Out: Frost, Day
In: Morris, Maginness

Just because Sam seemed to prefer a line up with Morris, as it allowed Hardwick to play a more damaging brand. Day could also be removed for a greater midfield role also, which would allow Maginness to resume his role of starting off ball and picking up a midfield opponent in general play.

I have no idea.

When a team is performing poorly, the catch cry is to 'play youth"
When just about all you have is youth, it's not that easy to select a side.

Amon will be a definite in.
I suspect Stephens and Meek will be in.
I could imagine Mackenzie and Weddle get games in R1.

That's 5 new faces just there.

Hopefully Worps is back along with several others who missed the later stages of this year.

Our team is going to look very different.

From what I can tell from training Finn will play midfield and Day will play some time on the wing also when not at half back. I think Worps and Sugar are likely competing for the 1 spot.

I can see a side like the below for Round 1.

B: Hardwick, Blanck, Frost
HB: Jiath, Sicily, Scrimshaw
C: Day, Maginness, Amon
HF: Moore, Koschitzke, Macdonald
F: Breust, Lewis, Meek

FOLL: Reeves, Newcombe, Wingard

Only switch I'd make to that side is Meek / Reeves trading spots and maybe Wingard out of the midfield in lieu of Ward or Worpel.

Is Wings training with the mids currently?

Not that I’ve seen.

Meek - Maginess - Ward

Moore - Lewis - MacDonald
Breust - Reeves - Wingard

Impey - Nash - one of Worpel / Stephens / Mackenzie - one of Butler / Kosi.

Impey to rotate through the backline. Day to move back there if required.

Main midfield rotation of Ward, Maginess, Newcombe, Nash and one of Worpel / Stephens / Mackenzie.

Wingard, Moore and MacDonald to also roll through the midfield.

CJ and Ward to rotate through the wing.

MID: Reeves - Newcombe - Worpel
MID: Day - Maginness - Amon

HF: Moore - Lewis - Wingard
FF: Breust - Meek - Butler

IC: Ward - Stephens - MacDonald- Impey

Looking at our list, Mitch Lewis is seemingly our most important player going into 2023, and Gunston is the biggest 'out'.
If Lewis goes down, I'd imagine we're going to struggle to kick a winning score.

Saying that, if fit, a half forward line of Moore, Wingard and Lewis is S tier.

Love our backline, and love the exciting midfield depth in MacKenzie, Hustwaite, Nash, Morrison, Bramble, Long, Weddle, O'Sullivan etc ...
