100% he is. Remember Brambles second half of 2021? Pace, skill…if he’s fit then I reckon he’s a lock for a wing role
No such thing... You compete for that role with others. If you are good enough you will get a chance. Bramble just starting his preseason. Has just come out of rehab let's see what he can do

Best 22s are so subjective and a lot is based on form, timing, opportunity, injury, game style, best option for opponent that week, so I'm going to just put what I think might be the hierarchy for each position from my PoV

KPD - Frost, Blanck, DGB, Jeka
Intercepting Def - Sicily, Scrimshaw, Day, Weddle
running Def - CJ, Bramble, Morris, O'Hara, S.Mitchell, BMac
Negating Def - Hardwick

Contested mid - Worpel, CMac, Long, Hustwaite
Burst from stoppage mid - Newcombe, Ward, Stephens, MacKenzie
Outside mid - Amon, Morrison
Tagger/Def mid - Maginness, Nash

Ruck - Reeves, Meek, Lynch

KPF - Lewis, Koschitzke, Ramsden
goal kicking forw - Breust, Moore, Wingard, Greene
Pressure forw - Brockman(tends to have decent pressure act numbers) we don't really have a specialist pressure forw like poppy or Cyril atm, they are more rare.
Hff link player - Impey, Butler, J.Serong, O'Sullivan, Bennetts

Positional changes that could happen, Jeka goes forw, Wingard or Moore into mid, Ramsden into Ruck, Day is training to go into mid/wing, CMac could spend more time forw?, Greene could play the KPF role if needed.

Based on training:
Jeka won’t go forward.
MacDonald is training with the mids regularly, as is Day.
CJ is more of an intercept defender, Morris is more of a negating and intercept defender than a runner.
O’Sullivan is a pressure forward who will play high.
Weddle is going to play mid/wing.

FWIW, I think Morrison will start.

Just a reminder to everyone though that we are building versatility into the side.

Realistically, the following players could all spend decent chunks of time playing through the wing next year:

Amon (will be a lock), Day (won’t be played at Box Hill), Morrison, Bramble, Weddle.

That’s not factoring in (what we perceive to be) the primarily inside players who could rotate through there (eg. Ward), or potential draftees who could also rotate outside (eg. Frenchie).

I think Morrison gets games due to experience and versatility, but I think we know that the others listed above will all get games - so it will mean people will get pushed out for one reason or another.

This is only a good thing - I hope we having players banging down the door at Box Hill and thus putting pressure on those playing in the AFL.

O’Sullivan is a pressure forward who will play high.
I love the attributes he displays in his highlights. That wicked side-step & his vision & deft kicking in traffic looks awesome.

I've not seen his defensive side but he looks to play with high intensity so I'll not be surprised when he tackles like an absolute bandit!
Weddle is going to play mid/wing.
With his physical attributes, I'm sure he could play both mid & wing... at once!

Impossible to pick our best 22. Almost everyone on our list will be given an opportunity at some point in 2023 you'd think.

Individually, I'd say it's really important:
  • DGB becomes a lock in the best 22
  • Day manages to play 20 games
  • Scrimshaw shows versatility outside of half-back
  • Worpel locks himself into a starting mid role (if not, doubt he'll be with us in 2024)
  • Stephens shows enough to suggest he'll be a best 22 player (4th season in the system so needs to show a bit )
  • Kosi needs to grab the second key forward spot, massive year for him.
  • Jeka would probably want to play 12+ games. Ditto Bramble. Ditto Morris.
  • Long would probably want to play 5+ games, could be hard for him with Worpel, Stephen's, Mackenzie, Weddle available however.
  • Seamus needs a big block showing plenty at Box Hill.
  • Brocky has all the tools to be a best 22 lock, big year for him

I’m surprised so many people still don’t have Fergus Greene in the team.
Well we thought so highly of him that when 17 other teams didn’t sign him as a delisted free agent, we offered him a one year deal.

He might play Rd 1 but there’s very little to suggest he walks straight in.

He was cut from the Bulldogs in 2020 after 5 games in 4 seasons. Yep he has been a strong VFL performer since then, but that doesn’t make him “a lock”.

While I would concur that he is not a "lock" for round one, I just can't imagine why the club would have picked him up were they not intending to play him frequently. I guess we're more in agreement than not.

One word - DEPTH.

One word - DEPTH.
I don't think Greene was picked up just for depth. Assuming the Lewis is a lock and we use one of the rucks in a Hale role, there is a third tall vacancy and no standout candidate. Kosi would be the leading contender but has deficiencies that have been widely canvassed, Serong will be under consideration, but so too will Greene. One of the three will probably take the field in Rd 1 but who it is will depend on their form in the match sims and practice games during the month or so leading up to Rd 1.

I'd be surprised if Greene plays more than threebgames this season, barring a spate of injuries.

Hard to predict the opening bounce line up in the middle.
I'm going with:
Foll: Reeves, Ward, Newcombe
C: Amon, Worpel, Day

Rotating: Morrison, MacDonald, Nash.
Good choices, would just add Moore and Maginess into the rotations and will not be surprised if Stephens doesn't make an appearance. Meek maybe as the starting ruck men. Having these too giants play thru the forward line, in the pocket, will be a BIG!( pardon the pun) headache for opposition defenders set ups.

Important to remember when picking best 22s we assume no injuries which I hope there will be very few, but this is why depth is important. Even though we got rid of experience, you can see our depth is building

Even if players like Finn don’t make our first choice midfield I can see him making half forward flank or bench as we are building an elite endurance team, I see us beating Bombers and other teams based on this

Considering we literally haven't played a "best 22" since 2015 and the last 7 seasons have had anywhere from 3-12 injuries to otherwise first-team players each week, it's safe to assume we'll be rotating a pretty big group again.

This thread is purely hypothetical and a fun mental exercise.

From the vision I have seen the one thing that Greene seems to posses is a good strong set of hands.

Apart from Lewis (who is excellent at this) I can't think of any other forward in our list who has this skill (especially since Big Boy has now retired).

Kossy has well documented issues with taking a mark, Wingard can on his day but it's not really his strong suit, Bruest used to but now kicks most of his goals from roving packs, etc.

I look at Greene as a Mark Williams type player. An undersized forward who is a good mark and great set shot.

Just based on this I can see him playing quite a few games to take some heat off Lewis. You need more than one marking target in the forward line otherwise defenders will just swamp Lewis and make his life hell.

The thing is, we know he'll perform at Box Hill. So he'll constantly be knocking on the selection door. I think we'll see Greene pretty often as long as he contributes a goal or two a week at senior level when given the opportunity.

A very astute point Simon.

If defences know that our only real marking target (subject to how Meek/Reeves go) is Lewis, then he will be outnumbered in every contest.

I’m sure Sam is aware of this, but we need to give Lewis as many 1 v 1 opportunities as possible. If Lewis isn’t constantly outnumbered, he’s a good shot at kicking 50-60 goals next year.

Bring on Round 1!
